Funny poker promotion

I just got this e-mail from DuplicatePoker, wth it talks about eliminating bad beats by using a definite card pool. Am I just ignorant or is this really crazy ?

It apparently works similira to bridge, like the same deal gets dealt on two tables, and after the deal your outcome is compared to the other table, say you ran with KK into AA and lost you buy-in, but same thing happened on the other table, so the outcome of the hand is - you didn't lose a penny.

It changes the game completely, and I'm unsure which of teh players you're betting against? I'd guess - against the dude with your cards on the other table?

Oh, and if it's the way it seems to be, the game may grow a huge community, again similar to how duplicate bridge kicked out rubber bridge.

And, similar to how duplicate bridge works, the luck factor is still huge, for example you can play your hand perfectly, but there's some donk sitting on the other table just giving his chips away, so the guy on your position just beats you every single hand.

GsOne got it right.

They say it eliminates luck because you are competing against someone who id playing the same exact hands as you, so they think whoever wins more is the better player and therefore wins.

For example, say you register for a 4 player game. you play HU against one of them and the other 2 play HU on the other table. each table gets dealt the exact same hands and plays hand-for-hand, for maybe like 8 hands or so. Then after those 8 hands, the player with the most chips in the pair who got matching cards wins and takes that losers buy in. So really there are 2 winners in each 4 player game, and you are really only competing against 1 other player even though you are actually playing against someone else.

This is a tremendously stupid idea because poker is played every man for himself. In a duplicate bridge match you have two teams competing against each other and thereby all luck is removed by dealing the two tables identical cards. It only works because everyone who's not on your team is on a team with each other.

Tournament duplicate bridge, as GsOne noted, reintroduces large quantities of luck since there are many many teams and some of your opponents can get lucky by playing against random other noobs who suck. Trying to apply the duplicate system to poker suffers from this problem x1000, which makes the whole thing completely impractical.

So me and my friend could be registering at the same time, hoping to get in same game, and if were dealt same cards, we just play it out, while if were on the other hand are against eachother, will be able to totally exploit our opponents?

Although it is incorrect that it removes the luck factor, just changes the source of your luck. There is a great deal of luck in duplicate bridge, for example a good player may evaluate two ways of playing a difficult contract, and find that one play has about a 35% chance of success, and another has a 25% chance of success, and that tiny ten percent edge may be what separates him from a decent player playing the same contract. Meanwhile, neither play works, and a clueless idiot butchers the hand on another table but gets insanely lucky and makes the contract, getting a top board, while another timid pair of bidders didn't bid a game in the first place, and they get second board, easily making their partscore.

More to the point: Who wants to remove the luck from the game? The winning player? You want to chase away your customers?

The losing player? He plays to gamble, not to win in the long run. Making it like duplicate bridge takes out everything that he is playing for.

Horrible idea, utter failure.

say you fold your hand (good fold) but your opponement chase and he hits, there u just lost money.... luck aint removed

it would be really complex to implement a no luck poker that truly works, probably impossible

like a poker where rekrul would beat me 100% of the time

Question. If money would always be divided over EV in showdown situations - where would the luck be in? That's far from impossible to do. I guess getting coolered is also luck, but eliminating that would make the game stupid. :D

Just received an email that this company went broke.
