<img src="http://www.liquidpoker.net/user_pictures/eaee2.dwanmartonas.jpg" align="right" style="margin:5px; border:0px solid black;">Some epic high-stakes action took place yesterday, as the biggest session of the year was played. The two key players of the day were Tom "durrrr" Dwan and relative newcomer Martonas. Martonas seemed to appear out of nowhere, but was never shy of any action. Durrrr and Martonas played a session of over 5000 hands in both No-Limit Hold'em and Pot-Limit Omaha, with the majority of hands being played in No-Limit Hold'em. Finally some more NLHE action, as most of the high-stakes action lately had been in Omaha. In the end it was Dwan who ended the day as the happiest as he at one point had over 3 million dollar on the tables, while Martonas was down $2.7 million!

A lot of big hands played out, but the record for biggest online hand remains the same. The second biggest pot of 2009 did get played, and it wasn't surprising that Martonas and Durrrr were in it. Durrrr raises preflop with 5s4s and Martonas 3-bets with KsKd. Durrrr 4-bets to $34,000 and Martonas calls. The Kh3s2d flop makes both players check, and when a 4d comes on hte turn, Martonas bets $78,000 to get called by Durrrr. The 6c on the river gives Dwan the straight and he calls the shove from Martonas to win a sweet $603,752 pot! Fortunately for Martonas, he managed to recover a bit of his losses after most of the action became Pot-Limit Omaha. Here, it was durrrr who lost some money, while Martonas won back about almost 1.5 million dollar. At the end of a session of almost 24 hours, Dwan is up $1,3 million. Martonas is down about $900k.

So who is this Martonas? Nobody seems to have a clear answer. Most rumours say it's Martin de Kniff staking Jonas Danielsson, aka Nebuchad at LadBrokes Poker. This theory is partly based on the nickname: Mart(in)(J)onas = Martonas, and since Nebuchad is known for big swings and crazy bankroll management, it is plausible. However, others say this is not possible, since Nebuchad was said to be away during the session, and since his chat behavior and English are normally different. Whoever it is, it's certainly not a scared player and hopefully we'll see much more from him.

More hands and railing can be found in our railthread.

if poker is dangerous to them i would rank sports betting as a Kodiak grizzly bear who smells blood after you just threw a javelin into his cub - RaiNKhAN

It wasnt heads-up play, but the regular 6-max tables (RailHeaven, trex313-table, and a few more). However, both Dwan and Mortanas were playing at all these tables, while others (CTS, Ziigmund, David Benyamine, Pokerbluffs, and some others) were just playing a few of them, or shortstacked. Whoever Mortanas was, he's got heart to keep playing the way he did and he played a pretty aggressive game, a lot of fun to watch him and Dwan playing eachother =)
