Let's talk long term life EV.
Let's forget about the non-monetary factors like free-time and stresslessness for now (undoubtedly huge factors in one's decision making, of course)

What's your best bet?

Is it poker?
Is it law?
Is it engineering?
Is it a start up?
Is it finance?
Is it day trading?
Is it in sales?

In my case, I'm fairly confident I could make 100k/year at poker if I truly put my mind into it and I had to depend on it by grinding the hell out of PLO100.

However, my other options have so much more potential that it seems foolish (note: in my case) to devote myself to poker beyond mild entertainment purposes.

Top Lawyers can charge $600/hour. So can independent business consultants. Executives at tech companies with 500 employees are compensated at roughly $300k-$500k per annum. A graduate of a top MBA program makes $100k-$150k his/her first year out of school. Learning how to minimize your tax exposure can often net you a greater hourly rate than actually grinding poker.

Our +EV choices will be different.

For me, it entails investment, business and marketing.

For my friend, it is music.

For another friend, it is finance / futures trading.

For my cousin, it is pharmaceuticals / marketing.

What's yours? Is it really poker?

poker def.

you really have to account for other things other than just money. You can start pulling in 100-150k + bonuses at year as a financial consultant at goldman sacs or something but you'll be working 80 hr weeks and 100 on the dead line weeks. obv you'll be making 400-600k after 4 years + cheese on top but fuck man. you won't really have a life besides money... and money is great but it ain't that great, it's only money.

now the other jobs I don't think I'm smart enough like doctor (lol I wouldn't be able to make life decisions for others anyway + I'm not smart enough), Lawyers shit just make my head hurt, I can see myself in investments in client/money management but i'm sure there's a billion other dudes way better than me at it so I'm quite far behind.

entrepreneurship just seems too risky for me (ya i know i'm a poker pro but watever) but def has huge rewards for the very few that make it and probably a very rewarding life style too.

I'm going to be doing small business ownership soon as a nice side income. So the majority of my winnings from this year and in the comin year will probably go towards that.

I definitely hear ya YoMeR. My university historically outputs tons of students to Wall Street, and the majority of my friends went on to do finanace. But I could never envision myself enjoying the finance life so I never even considered it. As you say, money is not the most important thing in life. It's just money.

Fwiw, entrepreneurship is risky only if you use your own funds, which you should never have to do if your business plan is sound anyways. Ofc finding the contacts to initiate the funding process can be a pain for people who lack such contacts / networks

Goodluck with the small business

I quit poker this year to start my company, which was a very easy decision even though I was a solid long term winner on the midstakes since I don't want to tell the grandkids I played a game for my life. Also I personally feel it really important to make my mark and to do it ethically. And I'm not really bothered about money beyond basic living expenses. I still play on the side and coach a bit for some pocket money allowing me to reinvest more business profits and because I really enjoy playing and thinking about poker. I'm happier now than ever.

Researchers used brain scans to show that when straight men looked at pictures of women in bikinis, areas of the brain that normally light up in anticipation of using tools, like spanners and screwdrivers, were activated.

Poker is definitely not for me long term. That said, neither is school or working for some retarded company. The only work I enjoy is physical work. I want to build shit, move shit, and be outside. It's super hard to find a job like that around here so poker is an awesome way to pay the bills. Later on if something opens up that looks good, I'll ditch poker super fast. I've done it twice this year already, but it was for short term shit =[. If I somehow make a bunch of money from this poker shit I'll look into starting up a business or something. All I know now is that I cannot work in a cubicle, I cannot work inside all fucking day and there are no good options for work where I am.

That said I'm super happy doing what I'm doing now. I'm not making much money but I have a ton of free time to do what ever and just enjoy life.

I guess careers like architecture / design fit the bill here. Other than that, I could think of say, volunteering at inner-city housing projects / international housing projects in 3rd world countries, or alternatively, military engineering positions / firefighers :O.

One thing about a standard job or field is that for the most part you are guaranteed money everyday and are not risking working at McDonald's when you're 55. I've seen far too many players whoseemed to do well a couple yrs ago who would be lucky to get a livable salary today.

I'd tell any kid to not play poker and go into another field long term it'll yield more money. Poker doesn't really pay that mucch unless you're a 4BB winner at 5/10 and its far more stressful. However for the most of us were too old to do anything but play poker. We screwed up with starcraft.

I'm glad that I didn't drop out of engineering school to play poker. I'm glad that I continued onto law school. I somewhat regret thati played so much poker during law school but I had to pay bills for kids.

Now I really am a busto. Thanks FTP.

I'm happy you were able to land a position when the job situation in the law market is pretty bleak.
Huge props

IMHO, in the western world we still need to make sure our skills are up to date and that we are productive professionals in order to "guarantee" our careers. The company isn't going to take care of you if you suck - you still have to cover your own ass. (this is in contrast to many estern asian nations where a large company will essentially guarantee your life and will not fire you for incompetence.)

I've done landscape architecture design, wasn't horrible but it's not what I want. I also live in maine so there are 0 cities, let alone inner-city housing projects. I've thought about the military and it's still an option.

this is a nice blog post and probably should be posted in main poker

to answer your question i'm really not sure although i know that i don't want to be playing poker forever

would like to get into consulting / sales hence college majoring in management science

now that i've graduated and could be looking for real jobs, i'm really hoping some convenient segue can be made from fulltime poker player into "nice job" @@

nice to hear guys having plans aside from poker. if you have options definitely take it. poker is an awesome side income imo, but a mofo to make your only source of income.

As a latin american player poker seems to be ev+ for me. I could have went to the best law school here and make 2-3k/month off the bat and 5-7k soon, however I think lawschool is super boring and probably I would have dropped out anwayway at some point.
So I decided for business school, which in my current situation i'll be making less than 2k when I finish college in 3.5 years; I can't really tell how much up i'll climb up. On the other hand, at this point I'm super sure I can make that same money in a month easily (did last month), specially with lots of free time. Obviously I expect to get higher than nl50 aswell.

However its obv retarded to become a poker pro at nl50. I started my own business with a friend selling "kettlebells", dunno how much it'll work out but most probably i'll sell first shipment from China within a couple of month and make 6-8k. I'll keep studying/playing poker, and re eval situation later. My parents will hate me if I tell em i'm dropping out of uni to play poker =)
