Been having a weird problem, started about 3 weeks ago? My computer randomly freezes (screen is frozen, I can move mouse, but can't interact with anything) every 20-30 min for about 5-8 sec, then continues to operate like nothing happened
Happens while playing poker and HON, dont really use it for anything else

Don't think it's memory or speed related but I'm not sure. basic specs are : dell xps sturio, core i7 930 $ 2.8GHz , 6gb ram - running on windows 7 64 bit

Anyone have any suggestions?

Could be memory related. maybe one memory module is bad. had a similar problem and dissapeared after replacing one of the modules.

there are no facts only interpretations

It could be almost anything.I had a similar problem, at first I thought it's a software one, because as described the screen used to freeze for a bit and then go on.But it end up freezing without restoring it's normal work and it turns out that it's because HDD problems.A new one solved the problem. But as mentioned above it could be a memory stick, or even Video card problem.
If I were you I would try with reinstalling Windows 7, and if the problems remain just give it for repair.

Is this a laptop or desktop? I dunno how old it is, but check your fan/heatsink and make sure there isn't dust piled up and stuck between it. I dunno if the technology has changed in the last few years, but my friends had issues with SpeedStep (enable/disable in BIOS) activating when the processor would get too hot and cause the same issue you're having.

if u press start and typ "memory " windows will show u the automatic memory check tool from windows .
u should also do a
"press start " : typ cmd rightclick open as admin in the black box typ " c: chkdsk c: /F /R "
This will check ur disk on errors and will fix them if can b fixed .
closing ur pc after freezing is bad for the hd so there can b some errors .

i'd also do all your updates , maybe in the same black screen u can typ: sfc /scannow (will do a system file check)

But ur error sux to fix -_-V and i hope its ram or hd problem else it just plain sux to fix . cuz u don't get an error anywhere .

1 good tip :youjizz.com keep's away most problems people get using the computer .

It looks like an overheat problem just as eso said. You should try to switch of a fan, and see if the frequencies of the freeze increase, if yes just buy a new one or add another one.

I am no expert but I usually fix my own PCs. If it was overheating, typically it would shut itself off, to me it sounds like one of the components. Something similar happened to me once, the RAM checked in Windows as fine but it wasn't. I would try starting it with only 1 ram chip in it and keep trying each chip until you get an error. This is probably the easiest solution, so I d give that a try first.

This happened to me once a while ago when my video card/fan to it was really really dusty. I cleaned the dust off it with an air duster thing and it worked fine after

Definitely hot overheating. A system wont freeze (with mouse still moving) for 5 seconds and then unfreeze like this. It would either completely lock up, become unusable, or stay choppy as hell freezing constantly once it hit the threshold. Probably just software related. I've seen any number of seemingly harmless programs manage to completely fuck up a computer for no reason whatsoever.

It sounds like your system is pretty modern, regardless I would go and dump McAfee first and see if I can observe any changes. I would also uninstall any other recently installed programs one by one examining the system for stability. If none of these work, reinstall windows. If that doesnt work, then it really is the hardware. I'd start with RAM diagnostics (memtest 86+), then SuperPI (for processor overheating), then try a different video card (also just try reseating the memory/video card).

bye now

Maybe you should try some diagnostic software from manufacturer of your hard drive, they should have it on their website. Did you hear any strange noises when it freezes? Like hard drive clicking?

it seems to be worst near the end of my poker session (and almost non existant in the begining), the frequency increases. I import from both PT3 and HEM at the same time, maybe my hard drive cant keep up? I've been doing that for a while, problem is fariley recent
