So today I had a rather unusual encounter. While entering the freeway to head into town some maniac started tailgating me at 80 mph. Not just normal "get the fuck out of the way" tailgating, but like 2 inches-directly-from-my-bumper-about-to-cause-a-crash tailgating. So I speed up a little but realize I'm not going to do 100 mph until I get a ticket, meanwhile cocksucker is still on me like I've got a dead body hanging out the trunk. He finally decides to pass and I let him, only to get up to my window and start flipping me off and other retarded shit, so I just gunned it and blew right past him again.

Once again he starts tailgating me beyond the threshold of safety, so I let off the accelerator and coast down to about 35 mph on the freeway while he continues to stay behind me, until he finally goes for the pass and I just slam on the gas and take off again. He catches up to me again and starts waving goodbye which I dont quite know what to make of, and I start running out of freeway and am forced to enter city streets.

I'm a little nervous to let him box me in at a traffic light or something so I continue to take known roads until I reach a Wal-Mart parking lot. Then we just drive laps at 15 mph around the entire parking lot as he continues to chase me or whatever. I finally punch in the GPS to go to the nearest police station and figure I'll let him chase me there and see what happens. I am forced to stop because a car gets in front of me, at which point he quickly comes up beside me and starts yelling "go on little girl! go on!". I dont really understand what his deal is but I got the impression he was giving me the right of way, which I can only deduce to mean he thinks I cut him off somehow. I usually enter the freeway pretty fast just for the fun of punching the accelerator, but I also make sure the road is clear before doing it. I'm a very courteous and observant driver and there's no way I cut anyone off.

So it kinda got me thinking that this guy might be a psycho, and I'm sitting here having to keep my car in motion to make sure he cant get beside me and shoot me or throw a bottle at my car or whatever. I have a fast car (5.0 mustang) and can pretty much outrun any normal car, but then again I dont really want to have to endanger myself just to run away from some asshole.

But people are crazy in the world and I dont want to become Zimmerman's next victim, so it got me thinking. Aside from my car, I dont have any self-defense capabilities in this world. I dont know how to fight obviously, plus my attacker may not fight fair, I dont have a gun, taser, baton, etc etc. I started to feel like a statistic, like that person who gets mugged/killed because there was nothing I can do. Most people get all self-defense oriented after something shitty happens to them because they dont ever want to let that happen again. I kinda felt like this was a little wakeup call. There have been plenty of times where I'm in sketchy neighborhoods, ATM machines at night, etc etc, where I am just a big target and it would be nice to know I at least have a chance. Afterall, thats why the call a firearm "the great equalizer".

So I'm going to go to a shooting range tomorrow and see what it feels like, because I've never even shot a gun before. I'm also thinking about tasers (the kind that shoot) but since those are basically one-shot only, and look close enough to a real gun that my attacker may start shooting first, I'm still leaning towards good ole fashioned bullets as my best defense.

My goal is to keep this weapon tucked away somewhere in my car. They make car holsters for putting it under your drivers seat, between the seat and arm-rest, etc etc, so you can grab it faster than going for the glovebox.

By the way I would never pull a gun on someone until I was absolutely certain they were trying to attack me. If I had a gun in the above scenario, I imagine I would either flat out leave it holstered, or hold it safely in my lap pointed towards the door in the event that I have to quickly aim out the window, which I would only do if he pulled a firearm on me or left his vehicle and started walking towards me. Otherwise I would never incite violence and for all intents and purposes, this guy would never even know what I was carrying.

i lol'd at reading these together from your post.

anyway, getting a gun sounds like it'd make the situation way worse. you're trying to out-intimidate a possible psycho, which isn't going to work very often. it may even encourage him to try to be more aggressive as a last ditch effort. worst of all though, he could have had a gun too, and by flashing a gun of your own, you encourage him to use / reach for his, which would be way worse.

sounds like you're trying to out-aggro a super LAG (for ego? that asshole can't do that to me!) when you should just tighten up.

seems fine to have one but once u enter that road youre going to get cameras, alarms, and other gear as well since it turns you into a paranoid guy. if youre buying a fire arm then it's a big responsiblity imo and maybe you dont want that stress in your life. if you keep relations with good people and dont do any shady side activities then the chance of something like this occuring again in which u would need a gun are extremely slim. the one thing i would advise before you get a gun is to research as much as you can about the laws of owning a firearm and when you are legally allowed to shoot someone in a moment of panic. plenty of legitimate citizens go to prison b/c they shoot people around their property when its against the law in their state. I know it's illegal in a bunch of states to shoot a burgler if they have their back turned to you even if they already broke into your house and have a gun on them, man shit is so fucked in u.s. law. have you ever heard of the story of the burgler who fell through the roof of a home-owner and successfully sued the owner? prob best to avoid buying a gun and continue your normal stress-free life. it's not like you live in san bernardino CA lol

Negative, I abide by the motto of "never point a gun at something you arent ready to kill". The gun doesnt become visible until the hammer is cocked and the safety is off. Like I said, he'd never even know I had one until I felt VERY threatened. I would not brandish it just to show off that I have a gun. In fact I've read stories of people doing that and getting shot just as you mentioned, since he could easily be carrying as well and now he feels threatened by me. The goal here isnt to put him in his place, it's if he comes at me with a baseball bat or even a gun of his own. Pure and simple self-defense, nothing else. It just sucks when you suddenly realize "I'm fucked and there's nothing I can do to stop this guy" all because I never learned to protect myself, and just assumed nothing bad would ever happen. Sorta like driving without a seal-belt and hoping you never get into a wreck.

people do such stupid things in heat of the moment, and there are so many levels of tilt. i think guns are extremely irresponsible and quite honestly believe multiple levels of psych evaluations, character evaluations etc should be required for guns.

as for you, wth are you doing, simply move away and let him go? i feel as though you put everyone on the freeway at danger quite hoenstly

i agree that it sounds like you helped escalate the situation as much as the other driver to make this very dangerous to yourself and others. when someone tailgates you, you should never speed up to appease them, simply go the same speed or even flash your brake lights so they have to slow down until they just pass you. if you speed up, they're likely to continue pushing you faster and faster until you're uncomfortable like it happened this time. there's really nothing to be gained by showing this guy who's boss, i'd just let him pass me.

i'll add that when people get so emotional, they stop being rational. even pointing a gun at somebody isn't 100% to make someone back down even though they should. it sounds like a huge leap to go from a guy tailgating you into wanting to point a gun at him. who cares if some random guy gave me the finger? my self worth isn't based upon strangers' opinions of me. letting it bother you is exactly what he wants.

Wow sick story getting a gun though is kind of stupid get a decent pepperspray instead. it should do an equally good job even if your against more than one person and you dont risk going to jail for murder

I would definitely get a gun if I thought it was a good idea to antagonize someone that I think may be a psycho. Someone tailgates you and after they pass you you decide it's a good idea to get back in front of them so they can tailgate you again? No logic in that other than being upset about being flipped off and not being able to get over it.

I had a similar experience the same night my sister got diagnosed with cancer. Probably not as intense as yours being a 35mh speed zone but they were definitely fkn with me to get a laugh with his buddy. It really got me tilted so I threw a arizona bottle over the sunroof but couldn't hit the car. It still pissed them off so they sped to the side of me and started yelling and throwing shit at my car(Brand new car). Some water sprayed all over my window and it got my blood boiling. When we got to a red light, I jumped out the car with a baseball bat smashed his hood and the passenger window. I didn't say a word and looked straight in his eye one guy to the next and both didn't get out the car nor say a word. There were few cars that were present and I was sure they would have my license plate down to call cops.

Buying a gun is the first thing I did when I turned 18. If you've been a good citizen, you might as well practice your rights and protect you and your family from predators. Rights to carry arms and the complication of carrying license vary heavily depending on states so you should do your research and keep a gun at home at the bare minimum. Why you don't carry any protection in your vehicle is boggles my mind. I don't carry a gun most the times but I at least have a fully loaded pepper spray and a golf club that's in reach of my passenger seat at all times.

I actually stopped a burglary that was happening to my next door neighbor on xmas eve and testified as star witness month or two back. If I wasn't carrying a protection nor had a doggie to alert me, I wouldn't have had the courage to walk forward and stop it from happening. Gun + Dog = ultimate protection for poker players

lol americans, be smarter and don't throw your life away b/c of a random psycho. The chances are, if you get a gun, that you'll end up being shot or shoot down someone, either ways it's a massively ev- thing to do. The situation in which you have to use a gun for self-defense (i.e. confronted to someone who points one at you) is not likely to happen, if it ever happens. Even if a critic situation comes up, the fact that you hold a gun may escalate the situation as stated and result to your death, if you feel unconfortable in violent situation, take some Krav Maga courses or any sport that may help you in such situations.
Getting a gun after some random road rage is per se, stupid and even more dangerous for you. On my part, I never enter in a cock fight when I'm behind the wheel, it's pointless, stupid and possibly life changing.

Odds are exactly 50%: it either happens or not

Had a similar experience although not nearly as extreme. Me and 4 friends are close to the the end of a 5-6h drive on the freeway, another car with 4-5 guys drives past us and flips us off and keeps driving like 10km/h over the speed limit. We are all a bit bored so after a couple minutes someone suggests we catch up with them and flip them off in return.

We set off on our adventure to flip them off. We succeed and they start chasing us, we got up to 160km/h on a 90/km/h freeway. After a couple minutes our driver changed lanes and managed to get to an exit in a way they couldn't follow.

Nothing wrong with buying a gun for protection. In your situation though I would have called the cops at some point. Lots of crazies out there.

Get a gun, mace, body armour, knife and a tazer. Don't listen to the hippies, you won't just start shooting everyone just because you have a gun but it could save your life.
