paying 50 bucks a month right now for really solid comcast internet on the west coast. The connection is 12mbps.
I am switching to direct tv though and the roommate doesn't want to keep paying as much for internet. the new internet would be a 3 mpbs AT&T DSL connection and from what i understand noone uses that anymore and it is basically the new 56k.
Is dsl awful or would it be alright to switch? |

Bandwidth caps are important imo. If u want the speed or whatever then pay for it forget about your nit roommate. |

u need to be careful that some (most) providers limit torrent transfer in peak hours (which could mean anything, ive gone all day on fucking 5kbs). if ur happy with ur internet then stay with it! you might also be offline waiting for a week for them to connect it, if u have bad luck? |

we have dsl at work, it sucks. i guess it depends on what you do. do you game/download/stream etc. 50 bucks a month for 12mbps internet? how much for cable tv or do you not have cable?
i have fios at home and that shit is the nuts. 25mb down/25mb up. with extreme hd package and home telephone for $115 a month. after taxes and all it comes out to like $150~
but anyways if you download a lot, or stream hd content, dsl is definitely a no go. but if its just for casual internet browsing, go for it. |

dsl or cable can be good. it really depends on where you live... both are better then each other depending on location.
in the end you want a stable connection that has no cares of your bandwith. |

and people here are caring too much about speed. 12megabits down vs 20megaits down isn't a big difference. Stability is like a billion times more important then speed will ever be. |

I had at&t dsl for a while and it worked perfectly fine for d/ling and gaming. We wanted to get rid of our home phone so we had to get uVerse DSL instead. Absolute worst customer experience I have ever faced. Since we got rid of the phone line the service guy had to run a digital wire from the outside box into the house. He did this by stapling a very noticeable wire all over the house, up the roof, drilling through the roof, and into my room. He gets the modem/router all set up and everything works fine for approximately 1 day. The VoIP works for about 12 hours a day before having to be reset. Under the old set up it worked fine all the time. Eventually all internet went out after about 2 weeks.
They sent out another service guy who came out ran some tests, replaced the modem/router, realized that didn't work and ended up calling his tech guy. I'm watching the service guy and his tech guy calls another company. That company's person didn't know what to do so they had to wait for their IT department. Guy at my house to told to wait 30 minutes. He does so and nothing changes, his boss tells him to leave, and he says he'll be back later that day. He never returns. After many runarounds with phone support, we get another tech out today (2 days later). He does the exact same thing as the first tech. They installed the wrong modem. He has the correct modem on his truck but doesn't install it because the account is listed incorrectly. He leaves and says he will be back later. He said he worked until 8pm but it's 9pm now so I guess he's not coming.
So I haven't had internet for about a week. Basically I'm searching for new ISPs with my phone tethered to my laptop.
Cliffs:
FUCK AT&T uVerse DSL |

In all seriousness though, I'd suggest staying away from the 3mbps connection unless slower loading pages and such won't bother you. It really is considerably slower and it'll be very noticeable especially if you've been on 12mbps for a while. |

Is the price really that cheaper? $50 for comcast is pretty standard. And it's by far the best internet on the west coast even if I hate the company it self. |

I would hardly compare a 3mbps connection to 56k. I mean you are still downloading files around 350k/sec which is satisfactory for most people unless you download tons of shit off the internet. I have 12m with comcast and sure it's nice to be able to stream 1080p apple movie trailers with no delay, or download microsoft office in 15 minutes. At the same time I wouldnt really care if I had to wait 60 seconds to watch said trailer, or come back 40 minutes later to check on my torrent. Thats just me. Web pages and gaming should load up just fine and be totally transparent between these speeds. You may have to find new game servers though due to different routing paths these isp's use. What once used to ping at 22ms may now be 90, but you should find new ones in the 30's again. |

That sounds beyond terrible, don't let him ruin your life.
You should be able to get a way better deal from Comcast. I pay 50 for TV + internet, which is what I hope you are spending, so it's really not saving much. You definitely don't want to be stuck on 3 mbps though. |
