California's budget is eternally fucked b/c the state workers' pensions are ridiculous. From what I understand, it goes something like this.

*Retire at age 50.
*Pension nearly the size of last paycheck is guaranteed until death.

This "system" was approved back when California had a super-strong economy. Democrats ran the state, and having a huge budget surplus, they decided to balance it to zero by giving government workers the terms above + ridiculous wage increases.

This is how bad the government worker situation is in California (pretty sure these instances are of pple who have worked for many years and hence have bloated salaries, but that's just an additional issue that needs to be fixed).

A garbage truck driver in San Francisco makes $150,000.
A prison nurse in SoCal made $200,000 (more than the Warden) b/c of overtime.
Firefighters make $150,000. (I think they deserve to be paid well, but not this much...)
Govt workers' wages cannot be lowered. Any pay decreases must be negotiated with the union (who of course would never budge).

(nmeanwhile, a PHD engineer with 20 years industry experience gets paid about $100,000 in SV)

As more people reach retirement age, the pension payments will continue to increase in the coming years. Arnold has actually been trying to fix this for quite some time now, but the Democratic house(?) has rejected any such reforms. The next governor will either be Brown or Whitman, who are both rather terrible.

The status quo will continue I am sure, and California will most likely default within the next 10 years. The state is being run like General Motors and Japan Air Lines, both of which filed for bankruptcy due to overpaying its workers and having a bloated pension system.

btw the proposed solution from the "state" is a flat 1% income tax increase on all residents of California.

Yes, don't fix the broken system, but instead do everything you can to protect the rotten egg...

I'm proud to be American and proud to be from California, but the development of recent years really makes me sick.

This state (and this country for that matter) has grown by virtue of risk takers and creators of new value.

Yet now we've created a system where people who choose to take no risk and create zero additional value in the world (state workers) are compensated better than actual professionals with actual responsibilities.

But that's the kind of action it's supposed to be, hero action movie filled with hyperboles, just like the 80's and 90's. Just how the latest Indiana Jones movie was in terms of an adventure movie with all of the crazy stunts. Expendables was meant for the older generation that's all .

Why you do some random rant against California? California got some of the best colleges in the U.S. , and Cali is the one developing many of the cpu/energy technologies from Silicon Valley. We're also one of the most diverse states and we got legalized gambling and Disneyland ! .

cuz hes one of them east coast fucks..

and BTW to the OP.. most actors only spend 2-6 months on a set of a movie.. very rare they would spend 1 year doing shoots..

Its hard to make a easy buck legally, its impossible to make a easy buck morally.

I'd rather see a politician using his vacation time to support one of his state's industries than seeing them go golfing or dicking around in Crawford, Texas or Martha's Vineyard like our last 3 presidents.

i don't see why not. his role was so small that it could be done in less than a day. it doesn't effect how he runs his office, which he isn't paid for...

Pretty sure he is paid for running his office.
also i agree he could have filmed that in a day, i don't see how this would affect his job at all.

Actually i live in california, and do tons of work for the state government. and yes, you are almost exactly correct about how these things work. The payrates you described are rare cases, but yes they do happen and people do work on quite inflated salaries.
