For me it's because I'm a student and poker basicly my only source of income, at this time I have to.
Wages earned in parttime jobs for a student are just stupid.
In the future I do see myself working for a random company, unless i manage to make 12k+ on average or so, but even then I wouldn't play it forever.
But maybe some of you have a total different opinion on the matter, so i'm interested in reading these.

For your reason exactly.
Also it's also baller to say, I won a few grand last night from a tourney. Funny how I worked a part time job at subway this year, made $2k from it. Then I ended up winning a tourney for $2.5k.
Also the people I've met thru poker are pretty damn awesome and nobody is like dumb... almost everybody is smart (don't mean to sound like a douche, it's just that stupid people are kinda less interesting to talk to lol)

Easy part-time money for me to help me grow my business. I don't enjoy playing with a proffessional's mindset anymore. I hate it frankly.
edit: even fun drunken homegames are wrecked now, because I can't just 'hope' for cards and enjoy gambling - I'm just making the best long-term decisions I can.

I get *some* mental stimulation from playing, like playing a video game. Video games are far more satisfying for me though, although that might just be b/c im pretty good at games and not so much at poker. But a good 80% of my drive just comes from the financial prospect. I want to sleep in every day, go on vacation whenever I feel like for as long as I feel like, and have enough of a money umbrella over my head to account for any bad beats in life, like economy tanking, unemployment, inflation etc etc.
Although I do alright as it is now, and people always live within their means, so I have a feeling even if I became a millionaire I'd probably still find ways to stress out over bills after upgrading my lifestyle.
bye now

chemical engineering sucks cock and my school didn't offer evolutionary biology as a major...otherwise i'd have double majored in evo biology and psychology and prob have never met the ppl who got me into poker in the first place
dont tap the glass...im about ready to take a fucking hammer to the aquarium
I'm not really intrested in pursuing anything in college, I don't wanna have to work at a shitty job, poker is all I got to make something of myself
I like the idea of being able to increase my hourly wage anytime I want by playing better / putting extra work into my game. I also don't want that normal life most people go for, I wanna eventually be able to travel, so poker's perfect for that!

I'm just an amateur who usually plays live once a week or so, online rarely, and goes to Vegas once or twice a year. I enjoy playing, don't take it too seriously, and like to play games in general (chess, video games, other board games). I like guy's poker night where we play for $10 or whatever just as much or even more than my usual 1-2NL or 2-5NL game. It gives me some pocket money when I need it or the chance to treat my friends if I want to....without having to worry about it as far as the household finances go. I'm newly married, no kids yet....so I'm trying to play poker regularly while I can before kids come. I kind of see poker as a fun second job where I can come and go as I please. But yeah, it eventually does come down to money because if I lost more than I won, I wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much.

Browsing through your hand histories makes me wonder that you might not be aware these games are possibly play money. Have you ever tried to cash out? - Kapol
same, i like the game a lot, if i didn't i wouldn't play it because i dont think money is worth being bored or unhappy with what u are doing, esp something like poker that u have to do A LOT if you wanna be succesful

I don't. I found out I suck at poker (well, I'm not good enough to make the money I'd like to) so I've set out into the world to find a fulfilling career and I am now working towards obtaining that. Once I have said career (Law Enforcement) I can do it until I die for all I care.

Right now, I don't although I'm planning on restarting once my class load dies down (in another week).
I started playing for fun, then when I started winning alot (by standards of someone who'd never had job), I played for money for a while. Then I started losing, got a job tutoring and realized I'm only ever going to play for fun again.
Poker is just like a video game that you play for fun.

I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance, by running away from the scene of an accident.
Right now the only reason is for money as I'm experiencing very low determination and will to play atm. 700 hands in all of July and I probably won't play more than 1000 this month. Dunno what has happened though, I've never been this uninterested before, bound to happen after playing so many years -_- It's a job now, it's not 2006 anymore, I'm sure others feel the same.

Mostly because I'm a degenerate and get addicted to stuff very easily...
And when I get into something I get obsessed with it to the point of danger.
makes up for any additional purchases I like to buy myself like a new TV, laptop.. various things.. I dont make that much from poker and once was even a losing player.. but I enjoy the game a lot and feel like I took my game to a whole new level by cashing out the first 3-4 digit amounts and actually buy something with it.. but definitely playing more for the amusement than for the money
pfffffff...

I'm addicted to games. Most of my life it was chess. At other times, my life has been taken over by Magic: the Gathering, bridge, and World of Warcraft. Poker is the best one for making money. I think it's the first game I've consciously chosen because I'm trying to make a good decision, rather than just letting my impulses just lead me around by the nose.

it's said before, but
most of you are cool smart guys, but there are way too much intelligent people using their abilities to win at this game and make a shitload of money, while instead they could be out there to contribute society in a serious way.
its also too hard to work for a boss for 60k a year after you printed money whilst shitting with your laptop on your lap

I think a big part of this is b/c poker players by nature have to constantly think for themselves. That mindset carries over to the rest of their existence and interactions.
The majority of people rarely think of the "why" in each of their actions, but that's exactly what poker players do for a living.
