What is the meaning or significance of the two skeletons that Jack and Kate found in the cave of season 1? (interview from 2007)

CUSE: The answer to that question goes to the nature of the timeline of the island. We don't want to say too much about it, but there are a couple Easter eggs embedded in [the Feb. 7 episode], one of which is an anagram that actually sheds some light on the skeletons and hints at a larger mythological mystery that will start to unfold later in the season.

LINDELOF: There were certain things we knew from the very beginning. I don'[t know. I'm getting sick of theorizing about Lost. ANnoying that they answer questions with questions.

Who is the chick that raise them? Was she under instruction from someone else? Has she been a live a very long time and thats why she thanked MIB when he killed her?

This is just getting dumb, Lost is running out of time and leaving open ended questions. Very annoying

Man in black in not smoke monster. The smoke monster took form of Claudia's (Jacob and MiB's real mother) apparition to lead the man in black to kill his fake mother. Also, I'm betting the smoke monster killed all those people to make the MIB believe that it was his mother. The real ghosts only come with whispers. There were no whispers when she appeared.

Jacob has been playing the game with the smoke monster and not his brother all these years.

Shit episode pissed me off, right from the start when I see pregnant lady Im like please dont tell me they are gonna try to sell jacob and the other guy are twin brother, they look nothing alike... yet sure enough. But I can ignore that if the rest of the episode was good, but it wasnt :/

it was the fake mother that killed the real one though,so this theory is a bit far fetched (I mean,we already know that fake mother is no saint to begin with, to assume that she was framed )

yea but it's equally far fetched to assume a middle aged woman can kill an entire village full of people and burn it down. She hasn't shown any special powers except the power of KNOWLEDGE. The only times in Lost where entire groups of people get wiped out is when smokey comes. It also makes sense smokey would frame her, and it's pretty clear smokey became MIB instead of the other way around. They both seem want to get off the island so it's a pretty good disguise.

is it ok for me to delete everything after season 1? i'll just believe the end is when dwight gets kidnapped.

i didn't like the last episode but i guess i'm not suprised by it. i really like lost, i just like it more when i think of how cool it might have been.

Snider that makes sense and I didn't even realize that, I thought when MIB went into the light cave he became the smoke monster. but I didn't think about jacob/MIB's real mother appearing and how that had to be smokey doing it.

its funy to see people saying season 1 of lost was awesome when it was just ok and season 2 and 3 > 1 easy

This episode reminds of "the longest joke in the world." If you never heard of the joke you can read it here http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=85644 If you have heard of the joke it's about a guy starving of thirst in the desert and he comes across a snake guarding a lever that can end all of humanity or something like that.

Here is where they are similar

Both the lever and the island are supposedly a threat to humanity that need to be protected.
Both have guardians that seem to be immortal or don't age beyond a certain point.
The guardians seem to have magical abilities such as making the man dying of thirst to never need liquid again or to make Richard Alpert live forever, or Jacob and MIB unable to kill each other, etc.
Both of the guardians feel there time is done and want to pass on the guardianship of the island/lever to their child.
The snake in the story asks to be killed by sword by a close friend, the mother on the island seems to want to be killed by her son.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else that read that joke also thought about it when they watched this episode.

If Jacob killed his brother and the smoke monster isn't his brother,why did their mother tell them that she has made it so that they can't kill each other?

the light is where the black smoke monster lives and the black smoke monster killed him?

the fake mother lied about lots of things

It may be that the rules where the brothers cant kill each other weren't created until Jacob created his game.

the light is where the black smoke monster was trapped and the black smoke monster set into motion events that will free him by appearing to ManInBlack as his mother.

btw, the guy had NOT installed the wheel when his mom bashed his head against the wall, but the wheel WAS installed when they built the orchid. Soooooooo, who finished the wheel?

Yea the killing before saying a word thing is a good find.

These are probably just bad plot holes but if the smoke monster was trapped why was it able to influence people on the island? And why did it set into motion all the events at that particular time and not like 3000 years earlier if it had always been able to appear as dead people? Also it makes more sense why we would assume so, but why would MIB automatically assume his mother killed all the people in the village? It implies he's seen her control the smoke monster before or something.

There's a theory that I read that I found interesting. It said "...when Jacob sends the Man in Black down the log flume and he turns into the Smoke Monster, the light in the cave goes out. And they've wondered if that means that Smokey now is the light that Jacob is supposed to protect and that's why he can't leave the island. "
