I have a question for bigred, thats ive wondered about for some time;
At what point does a tournament field become too big? (i.e.becomes a crapshoot like the ME)

I don't think they can get too big, more people = more equity. But bigger fields do mean lots more variance, and theoretically you can play a lifetime of live mtt's and not know what your true ROI is . Tournaments are sick.

I think people tend to underestimate the true effect variance has on your actual earn. Even with a good ROI, at a certain point the large fields jacks up your variance to a point where you will never see your earnings realized even with multiple lifetimes of play. There are of course all sorts of considerations like time investment (which also gets jacked up a lot especially with live play) that make it tough to really say, but I suspect the point at which a field becomes "too big" to be an efficient use of money/time/mental power is considerably lower than it looks. |
