At what point does a tournament field become too big? (i.e.becomes a crapshoot like the ME)

I don't think they can get too big, more people = more equity. But bigger fields do mean lots more variance, and theoretically you can play a lifetime of live mtt's and not know what your true ROI is . Tournaments are sick.
