So, here's the thing. I've got a dilemma whether or not to study in Poland. This year is pretty much my last chance to decide what and where I'm going to study. But an opportunity to go to college/university in the USA or UK is really tempting. I'd like to know how you get a scholarship in these countries. Is it difficult ? In case of not getting it - how much does a semester cost on average ?
Another question is what majors would you recommend to a guy, who semi-likes math, loves English, used to be good at German, and would like to study a pretty easy (or hard but satisfying) and fun to learn major.
It would be great if you mentioned a name/location of the college/university you think is the best.
Thanks in advance ! |

EU citizens that study in England pay 3k pounds a year in tuition fees. Everyone can get a loan to pay for this. It's hard to get any other support if you're not a british citizen. Unless you get a migrant worker status which required you to work in the UK before u start university. That gets you up to 3k pounds grant (you dont have to pay it back) depending on your parents income. You may get up to 1k from ur uni as well but thats totally up to them.
Living expenses? Totally depends. I'd say that the minimum you need is (keep in mind that this is the minimum and it can go up to anything really ):
- accomodation - starts from 200 pounds a month if you rent a room in a house. university halls start from like 300 a month.
- bills, mobile etc - at least 50 pounds
- food - no idea, depends how often you eat out, what stuff u eat etc.
- going out - same as with food
So yeah it looks like all you pay is like 250-300 for accommodation and bills but the truth is you spend shitloads on food and going out. well it obviously depends. to be honest i have no idea what are my monthly expenses like.
Dunno how to help you about the course you want to do. It's really up to you. Best thing to do is just look up some university websites and find a course catalogue. There are so many possibilities that you'll definitely find sth for you. My advice would be - take maths on your matura exam. I was lazy and didnt do it and had to go to a worse uni just because of this. There are so many courses that requires maths that you should really put an effort and take it.
As for the location I study in Manchester and I really really like it. Loaaads of students and there are so many things to do every night. It's not a beautiful city, nor it's interesting but it's impossible to get bored and you're always pretty close from everything.
As for the USA, from what I know it's wayyy more expensive (like 15k dollars a year in tuition fees or even more) and it's very difficult to receive any scholarships. I also doubt you'd be able to receive a loan for this. Living costs might be lower though. |

I believe most EU students who study abroad in the UK get funding from their own country rather than from the UK institutions.

State department site for international students looking to study in America with FAQ, etc:
http://educationusa.state.gov/
Site with school search function I used to decide where to attend:
http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/
You should try to decide on a range of majors that interest you and what type of location you want to be in and then see what schools that gives you and go from there. I don't think there is a lot of money available for international students other than what your government might give you and loans. Different schools have different tuition so you will have to look into that also while making your decision. Good luck, I really wish I had studied abroad while in school. |

Come to Hungary mate. Our education system is decent enough, living is cheap, the capitol and its women are beautiful and friendly towards tourists, especially so to Polish people (You know, Polak, Węgier, dwa bratanki, i do szabli, i do szklanki. ).
My university (Corvinus University of Budapest) gives a decent economical degree and if you are a good learner and decent at maths it is easy enough with a somewhat flexible timetable. I could even help you set up here.
Well, if you aren't interested and intend to go to UK / USA exclusively, ignore it, I thought would give a recommendation. |

haha so you're Polish or you just know this saying: Polak, Węgier, etc ? thanks for reccomendation. I'll have to reconsider every option dozens of times before making the final decision. It'll be the most difficult and important decision of my life so far.
Thank you Sneakr and Ted for info about studying in UK/USA. I've already started thinking about the major I'd choose. It's hard though.
One question to people who studied/study in those 'cool states' like California, Florida. It may sound stupid but does it really look like in for instance American Pie ? I mean - wide parties with lots of hot girls, alcohol, beaches - life you could live forever. I've been wondering for a long time if that's at least partially true. Don't laugh at me I know it sounds stupid but I'm just curious |

I was born and have grown up in Florida. I live about an hour from the beach, and I've rarely partied on the beach haha.. Maybe if you were at a more coastal city than I. Though during special events (like spring break) you can definitely find big beach parties.
I'm in Orlando (UCF is the school here, has a pretty good) and there are a good number of college bars/clubs, a decent downtown scene(there's somewhere to go any night of the week), and the school is known as a party school. So there are plenty of house parties and shit to goto once you meet some people.
Dunno what type of music you like but there are a lot of hiphop and mainstream places, some places that play more popular rock, and the places that play any sort of electronic/house music are mostly dead except on friday/saturday, where there are quite a few people. There are of course a couple of places who play off the wall shit if you're into that too.. inudstrial/new wave/goth/hairmetal, but none of them have particularly big scenes here.
I honestly doubt its much different than partying in Poland (though I don't know anything about Poland ). You goto the club, you drink dance and have fun.
Lemme know if I covered what you wanted to know |

yea that's pretty much what I wanted to know a lot of house parties = a lot of people you can make friends with = a lot of alcohol = a lot of girls = a lot of fun = ... man, I'd love to be there right now (winter sucks when you can't go snowboarding, meh, effing knee operation)
another post in this thread that encourages me even more to study abroad :D |

You are not really studying anything serious unless you are in USA, Canada, England, Germany, France. So basically get the hell out of poland.
Just two notes. I put the linst in Order and also I wanted to include Japan but they are just too weird! |
