As you long time readers know, I used to do a "flashback" section on my old blog (www.alectorelli.com). The site is currenlty getting remade and should be done soon. However, the "flashback" section depicted events that I recall from the past that make for a good story and interesting read. I am planning on implementing this feature to my new blog as I have many good stories that I reminisce about on a regular basis. This one is a classic. It relives the story of Isaac "WestmenloAA" Baron and how he ended up with his Maserati.

I remember the conversation vividly. It was June of 2007 and everyone in the online poker community was super robusto (opposite of busto). I had just beaten PerkyShmerky out of $150,000 in one sitting and Isaac had 40% of my action (for those of you without a calculator that's $60,000). So by now I know you're wondering, what does "that time" mean? Well I'll get to that in due time.

"So what are we going to do?", I asked Isaac on the phone following up our session.

"Well, I'm going to buy a car. I'm thinking a Lexus or BMW."

"Good idea" I said. "I told myself while I was at the final table of FTOPS that if I won, I would buy myself a new BMW when I got home. As each player got eliminated, I started googling potential cars while playing. I think I'm going to head over to the dealership. I'll keep you posted." (Click)

You see, "that time" was referring to the time to buy a new car, and I'm a man of my word!

As those of you who read my blogs know, the rest is history and this is the end of the PerkyShmerky story. I might have left this detail out (as I don't remember), but I went over to the dealership a few hours after winning this match online and left two hours later with a brand new 2007 M6 convertible. The irony of the story was that I actually went to the Audi dealership first to test drive the R8; however, the salesmen was a moron and made some condescending remark about how it was only for "serious buyers". I believe that's the phrase he used.

"Oh that's understandable," I told him. "I'm just looking anyway."

Two hours later, I drove past him with the top down of my new car and waved. Priceless!

I came home and immediately called Isaac and filled him in.

"That's sick. I think I'm going to do the same thing myself. I'll let you know if I wind up with anything.", Isaac said.

A few hours later, I received a phone call.

"So, what happened?", I said.

"I got a 2007 Lexus IS 350 Sport."

"Sick man congrats!"

So by now you must be thinking to yourself, where does the Maserati tie in? I thought he just bought a brand new Lexus. Did I miss something.

No. You are right. This is precisely why he is the topic of my blog and this is where it gets good

September, 2007 - Isla Vista, Santa Barbara, California

For those of you who haven't experienced Isla Vista (IV as it's called among locals), you are missing out! Well I'll elaborate slightly. For those of you who like an influx of inebriated college students, non stop partying, stupid fights, and particularly permiscuous women (although I'm not sure about the factual basis to this statement; they say 1/4 have an STD by the time they graduate UCSB), you are missing out! On Halloween it is known to be one of the best places to go in the U.S. to party. It's absolute mayhem!

It was a typical Saturday night on IV. Frat house, party, alcohol, girls. Isaac headed in for what he thought was another night out on the town. By 3 a.m Isaac was incompascitated. I realize that might not be a word, but it's how I refer to drunk people. Maybe if I use it enough it will become one. Him and Richie Guzzo (the epitome of a frat guy….remember Pocketfives several years ago "Richie on the Rail?"….same person) ended up finding another ride home. The following morning Isaac realized he didn't have his car and scrambeled around to find his keys. After what seemed like forever, he found them and began to retrace the events of the previous evening.

"Where the fuck did I park?"

"I don't know. I met you at the house."

Richie and Isaac proceeded to head back to the frat house and look for the car. Unable to find it in the nearby vicinity, they began to ask everyone there last night if they had seen it around. After several hours of looking to no avail, Isaac began to lose hope and conclude that it could have been stolen. I remember getting the phone call the next day and trying to piece together what happened.

"I just don't remember anything after midnight." Isaac said.

"Did you call the towing company or report it stolen? Maybe you parked illegally and it got towed."

"Yea, they have to report it to the company within 24 hours, so I'll check back tomorrow."

"How the fuck do you lose a brand new $50,000 car?"

"I have no clue!"

When Monday morning arrived, and still no sign of the car (he visited every towing company in the Santa Barbara area), Isaac called his insurance company to report it stolen. They took the necessary precautions and after the allotted time to confirm it's loss (maybe a month or so) mailed a check to Isaac for the full amount of the car ($50,000).

"Ya know it's just a mystery to me. I looked everywhere, and talked to everyone I know, and nobody's seen it. I guess somebody must have stolen it."

That was the final consensus. Thank God for insurance. Several months later (after receiving his check), Isaac decided it was time for a new car. Since he was doing really well in online poker, he went for an upgrade. The brand new 2007 Maserati Quattroporte. An absolutely gorgeous car, and with $50,000 already paid, he only owed another $75,000 or so. What a bargain! Now if that's not ridiculous, I'm not sure what is, except for the converation I had with Richie Guzzo about a year later.

February, 2008

I was visiting my girlfriend at the time in Santa Barbara. Richie Guzzo happen to be attending SB city college at the time and had himself a girlfriend of his own. We decided to meet up for dinner one night when the following conversation ensued. Somehow we got on the topic of Isaac Baron (as he was one of our best mutual friends) and naturally we reminisced over the story of his stolen car.

"What ever happened to that thing? Did the police ever find it or catch the guy who stole it?"

"Oh it's better than that." Richie exclaimed.

"Oh please do tell!"

"About a month ago, Isaac received a call from his insurance company informing him that they found his car."

"That's awesome! Where? And what happened to the guy who stole it?"

"That's the thing. It wasn't stolen."

"I don't follow."

"Well about a year passed when someone had noticed a car that had been collecting dust for quite some time and hadn't been moved from the same spot in over a year. They called the police who noticed the car had been reported stolen. They informed the insurance company and sure enough, it was a match!"

"So wait, let me get this straight. You're telling me Isaac left his car somewhere for over a year untouched?"

"That's exactly what I'm telling you. The retard got so drunk he forgot where he left it. They said they found it 3 blocks away from where the frat party was held, parked comfortably under a tree."

I couldn't help but laugh in hysteria. It could only happen to a poker player. It seemed so fitting it would happen to Isaac.

"So what happened to the car."

"Well since the insurance company already gave him the check, they just kept the car in return. What was particularly funny though, was they took the liberty of mailing him all his school work from the previous year that he left in the car."

If this isn't the most ridiculous thing you have ever heard please share your comparable story at alectorelli@gmail.com.

Cheers

not bad story, I have one thats kinda related...

I went to UCSB for one year before transferring to a school in my home state (biggest mistake of my life guaranteed, I will never do anything stupider if I live to be 120). Since there are so many people in Isla Vista for Halloween every year (at least 50k easy in a town that is like 10 blocks square) they call in all the police from Ventura and everywhere else in the area to control the crowds. The year I was there was the year Michael Jackson went on trial for being a perv, and they were supposed to arrest him Halloween weekend (Neverland is in the Hills outside SB) but all the police were tied up in IV. So the chief of police had to hold a press conference explaining that they couldnt arrest Michael Jackson because they were too busy with Halloween. Obv nobody outside the area understood and the video was replayed on Jimmy Kimmel and a bunch of other shows and the Santa Barbara PD ended up looking like a complete joke.

I like the story where Durrrr tried to bribe a guy at the bowling alley so he and his friends would move up in line. Apparently Dwan has a habbit of giving out hundos whenever he needs a 'favor'. So he walks up to the guy with one in his hand. The guy laughs in his face and says 'no'.

Durrrr comes back to the group pretty shocked as he's never had this happen before. He looks down to realise it was a one dollar bill he was holding.

I was friend with this guy in Dubai.
He bought a convertable murcielago without anyone in his family knowing (the family was in Iran obv).
He didnt have a driving license cause he was like 15.

So anyway one day we were riding in the high way at some very high speed and some cop saw us.
[We had done this before at least 5,6 other times with me in the car going at 300 km/h in the highway between cars with cops behind us but it was always either some Mercedec (SL55 or a FAB Design Mercedes CL) the kid had many cars and obv the family didnt know about any of them.]
So he put it into gear and we basically had a high way chase but the cops were no match. But the problem was that there was only like 1 other convertable murcielago in the whole city! And his was the only orange one. So anyway he parked the car in some random parking lot of a friends building and didnt touch it again!

btw the scaries part of the chase was that we had to change lanes at some points cause of the cameras and with all the cars at 1/3 of out speed that was like REALLY scary. But another friend that was in the car told me that "once you have an accident going 250 in one of these cars and walk out without a scratch you know its not that scary!!"

I actually have many many stories like that from the time I was in dubai and those people are sooo fucking rich and degenerate that no storie really impress me after that. Unless it envolves Raszi or someone who is just sick hero in a different way. But I have to add they are all intresting reads.

I was in atleast three different cars(M5,Mercedes CL600 and a Murcielago) going at 300KM/h or VERY VERY close to it that I actually cared to actually look at the speedmeter cause it was either some chase or the driver was like "oh man check this shit out we are going at 300km/h." Sometimes they would even take a cell phone out and film the speedmeter while driving! lol. Anyway I was only reading the analog speedmeter. So as long as you trust that it is confirmed going at 300Km/h. Also note that its not really as crazy as you think it is. Because these are really well made cars. Going soooo smoothly that you can not feel a thing. Also driving on a perfect road in the desert you dont really have a sense of speed. Also all those cars has electronic kits on them to limit the max speed. They have the ability to go much faster but they limit the top speed for saftey masures. And I even know of people who took the kit out! lol. I actually know a guy who died doing so and the insurrance didnt even pay for the car! (not that the family or anyone even cared)

Also in none of them I was driving Obv. Because I dont even drive cars and I dont even find them interesting other than the engineering concept of it(thats why I only follow F1 rather than even going to car shows) But everybody in Dubai is just crazy about cars and they think its the coolest thing in the world.

I might actually be able to ask the guy for a video if you really care.

LOL so I checked on youtube and I see that appereantly EVERYONE is doing it now. So I dont even need to ask friend for the videos. And around %90 of the videos are in Dubai too. LMFAO!

This is VERY VERY close to the feeling of what is happening.
But take the camera shake out. The car would not even move. I bet you can literally have a glass of water in the cup holder without it spilling
Also take the trees and stuff out as well since in Dubai its the desert only and lamp posts and stuff.
Everything happens so fast you wont even notice much.

And obv this one with the music too!
You can actually kind of see how normal it feels inside of the car. You almost dont even hear the engine. And almost ZERO shake and vibration inside the car.

Btw if you are really into that stuff I will be in dubai probably for new year next year or maybe this summer. And you can come and Im sure I can introduce you to a bunch of old friends since Im still sort of in touch with them.

I might actually be able to ask the guy for a video if you really care.

not rly, i were just doubting for no reason , its not that hard to archieve, all u need is a long straight and a fast car.

in stock cars it doesnt feel scary, in modified it does its amazing how the sound and vibrations make it look much more dangerous.

for example:

It gets to the speed so fast and comfortable its not scary at all look at the 2nd video mostly. The trees in the first video and the hand shaking making it much more dramatic than it actualy is! You do not really even hear the engine if the music is just at normal volume.

Also at baal. When I go to Iran I sometimes one of my friends is going at like 100-120km/h in a normal car and you can totally shit your pants! Its just INSANE how different it is.
The whole combinantion of noise+vibration+details on the road makes it 547292740762 more thrilling.
(I know its news for some people but in Iran we actually have mountains and trees and stuff)

Dubai has the sickest stories ive heard in my life, i remember one story that this rich kid totaled his Lamborgini Murcielago, so he gets out of the car and calls the Benz dealership and orders a brand new Mercedes SLR and they deliver it and he takes off even before the insurance company arrived at the crash scene. wtf.

I'm not sure what's more funny. That the car actually sat there for a year and didn't get stolen, or that the entire living community of that local is so drunk all the time they didn't notice the car was just sitting there until about a year later. Either way LoL .

Indians and pakistani's that come to Dubai to work are living in a room with 6-7 other people. And they get paid of about 200-500 USD a YEAR. That is right about $30/month. And basically when they die in the work they do not even stop the job for a police report! They just bring another new sub in like 5min. (they usually do construcion works and other heavy/dangerous job)
If you look indian police and people are sooo racist about you they basically look at you like slaves and even other Indians that are super rich AND are in Dubai they also treat them like slaves.

But all the people in UAE are on a temporary visa so if you are FROM dubai. That is If you have UAE passport I've hear you dont have to pay for water and electricity. I even heard that if you marry another UAE national you get a free house! lol. Btw even if you born in UAE but your parents are not from UAE you do not get a UAE passport!
That part of the world is sooo fucked up you guys have no idea. The most arrogant, retarded, ignorant people you can ever see. If you think likes of ADZ and other people here are rich and arrogant you have NO IDEA.

LOL. I dont know about the truth behind this but if its true or not this is not even remotly a big deal!

Just a very "daily routine" example: In Dubai cars are not really expensive enough to show off. you can not really expend more than 1mil on a car. So the plates are important and they have number instead of letters. A normal plate is 5digits and worth at around 200-300USD that you have to get. ex:27468
Now if you want more prestige you can get a 4 digit plate with random number ex: 5782 This will cost around 1000USD
Now if you want more prestige you can get a 4 digit plate with 2numbers the same ex: 5722 This will cost around 3000USD
If you want less than 3 digits or cool numbers like "1234" or "1111" the police put them into auctions. And people bid on them. To give you an idea when I was there this Pakistani father bought the plate "123" for his kid at around 1.5mil USD for a birthday gift. Its very very common that you see a REALLY nice car like a Mercedes SLR for 500k that has a licnce plate of 17. And you realize that the plate cost probably around 10 times the price of the car!

And the plates even have series. So its not a unique number. They have A,B,C series so your number will read D123 and someone else have a E123. (but the letter is written small on the other side of the plate and no one calls the letter)

So they have all the letters series and a special series with no letters that is the most expensive and after that its the D series thats most expensive and then it gets to rest. (This is ALL for Dubai and there are other cities in UAE like AbuDhabi and the plates again have their whole games)

There was also this 25year old kid. Who bought a licene plate for his car for the price of $14mil USD! And he is actually from AbuDhabi not Dubai! And this kid is not even from the "famous" families in UAE! Link

Im not trying to be an asshole or anything. But nothing looks lamer to me than some poker players who just made a couple of millions showing off his so called "wealth" (cough ADZ cough). Just speak of his ignorance.

lol if you were a pakistani or indian you were not even allowed to get near the car!

We actually had this joke that one of the friends parking sensors were not working. So we suggested that he should put an indian in the trunk and whnever he wants to park the guy would jumps out of the trunk and gives direction then gets back in there!
And the guy was ACTUALLY considering it. And Im sure he could find someone for the job.

As much as i've read/watched, Baal, Dubai's wealth has come mainly from its oil. I heard they were like really poor in the past and since they started extracting this slippery shit they got TERRA rich. However, some experts say that soon (dunno what 'soon' means here) they will be out of oil...

Capaneo, so u r a Canadian, who lived in India for 3 years, have relatives there, have lots of friends in Dubai and lived there and now what? U r in a cave in Pakistan? How come u live in such unusual and distant to Canada places?

Well, you're right I'm not gonna argue with the fact that this salary isnt exactly terribly exciting, my main issue with this i guess is the sensationalism in your post, both with the licenses(were u significantly upped the actual price that they go for) and salaries, which u claimed were 300 a year.

However I would like to point out that the minimum wages are actually set by the embassies, so in some way it is accepted by both sides, and lets admit it while more money is always better id assume they know what theyre doing.

Where did I exagerated one bit about the plates? And may I ask how you know all about this stuff since you've asked me and I answered I think I deserve the same amount of information.
Also I didnt say you are right about the wages. Im saying that EVEN if you were right its still fucked up.
And what do you mean embasis set the min wage in the country?? How you know this stuff? I really really doubt that sheikh of Dubai consults with embasis to set wages. And in a country that law means jack shit for locals I dont even think its of any significance if there IS a minimum wage since no one gives a shit about the law in the first place anyway.

What are you talking about? Iranians there are foreigners! Only UAE national are considered locals. And no its actually the opposite. You only can go high into position if you are local. The only way you will be treated like shit is when you have a local husband. But then again that is also your choice to get married to a retarded Arab for his money. No one gets treated like shit.
What exactly do you mean by "treated like shit" anyway?
