I was talking about this with a friend, and since this is an international forum i thought i might get some good answers here. I've spent some time overseas, and it's very evident that people don't like americans. They don't hate us, they just have a negative opinion of us. When did this happen, and what's the reason?

Because USA is policing the world and for their own interests, they have military bases in the middle east to pursue their own goals.
They support genocidal dictators when its in their interests to bring down democratic ones (like they did in the past in Iran), and then invade countries like Irak claiming to bring freedom (LOL) to them while raping the whole country for oil.
But you might say, well that is OUR government, well that affects your image and in a personal level as individuals the worlds just see you as retarded ignorant idiots who follow their gov decisions blindly where in many part of the world they would have already revolted, for example in Greece they just had a big revolt for something 10000 smaller than what the republicans just did for 8 years in USA.

People hate american government and the fact that they try to control everything in the world. There's really no reason to hate the people in the country especially since most don't agree with many of the country's action, but that's what happens unfortuantley :/

But it's true what a lot of people in this thread said. We don't hate Americans, some of them are alright, but:
- a lot of them are ignorant and/or rednecks and/or people who know USA is #1 without ever having left it
- very little good music from there, just r&b, teenage rock and country, relatively little artistic value (especially compared to a small country like england)
- the country only started like 400 years ago, so there's not too much culture
- the government is ridiculous, the election system is as well, so is the educational system, and so is the army

I think there is an underlying resentment felt by a lot of people re Americans but I think hatred is going too far (for most!). I think it largely stems from the perceived arrogance of a lot of Americans (not ignorance have many have been saying - which can be funny). If anyone starts with the premise that they are the best there is instant resentment - just think about it - doesn't matter what you are talking about unless someone earns the right to call themselves the best e.g. Tiger Woods then calling themselves the best breeds resentment and general dislike. The best part of course is that those who are the best e.g. Tiger would never say something so crass.
I also think Americans have the habit of taking what is basically a good idea but taking it too far. For example:

Roald it's not that I disagree with most parts of what you say,in fact I firmly believe that everyone is always acting according to what he considers to be his best interest/make him more powerful. The problem is that various levels of understanding/stupidity result in different beliefs/actions and I don't see why you should avoid judging other peoples' beliefs especially when they might involve all life on the planet dying from nukes.

And just sick on how everyone who hates America are hating it because of the government, and then picking the south as the representation of us whole........when the northeast is the one leading all the cures and discoveries in the world, voted to obama, trying to decrease discrimination as a whole and getting a better education then our other counterparts. Well "genocide" refers to an attempt by a group of people to completely eradicate another specific group of people, not just an event which leads to the death of many people in general, so I dont see how it could be applied to the Iraq war. I think we can find enough ways to criticize the war without putting incorrect labels on it. But it's not really the issue so whatever.

Brasil, Chile, Argentina, Mexico (not so much) still managed to recover from the setbacks caused by this period but take a look at the remaining countries.
Colombia, Venezuala, Equador are torn apart, most of the people live in extreme poverty and there is no light in the end of the tunnel, makes you wonder if this has any relation to said countries having ultra nationalists stupid presidents.
This is old stuff and people don't even talk about it anymore in a global scale, but it happened and some people won't forget, I'm one of those people it was wrong and a whole continent suffered the consequences, this is totally different then the most recent actions in the Middle East and you can't compare them, the only thing they have in common is that they ended up bad and there is nothing else to blame except poor foreign polices management by the US Government.
PS: I don't hate Americans at all but I understand why some people do.

The US government in the past has supported repressive governments in Latin America, so you can understand why someone in one of the affected countries might hate all Americans, based on the actions of our government. Baal or Lex if either of you came to texas ever, I guarantee i could change your minds about at least Austin (the city i'm from). FWIW it's the capital, and pretty much only liberal city in the entire state. Austin is kick ass and pretty much the opposite of all the texas hillbilly redneck stereotypes you hear about. People are friendly, we have tons of awesome live music and film festivals each year, there's good food everywhere, and it was voted top 5 safest cities in America!
I think your missing the point here, those governements would not exist if the US foreign police wasn't so invasive, of course this can be historically argued but there is no way to deny that the US propaganda was insanely strong during the cold war and spread like a disease trough the entire continent, people were afraid of the soviets and willing to do anything to feel safe, when people are scared they tend to give a strong leadership all they have so they can be "saved".
(If you are curious about history this same behavior ended up creating US most hated enemy, spilling money into shady organizations to prevent the red menace advance in the Middle East only to see them become terrorist organizations a few years later.)
To be honest as said I can understand and even relate to the hatred this people feel but I think it's wrong and ignorant to hate each and every citizen of a nation due to it's government actions therefore the main point is that we should learn from our mistakes and avoid creating situations like this.
What annoys me is that this kind of thing doesn't get as much attention as it should specially in schools, people should learn their history and know when their actions were harmfull to others this is the only way history can evolve and not repeat itself and I'm not talking only about the US now, what European countries did during their colonization period both American and African is by far the worst case of genocide the world has ever seen and they seem to forget easily about this, sure it's ancient history but it's always good to take a good look in the mirror.
I could go on and on providing historical examples of how people fucked up each other in this never ending chaos that we live in but I guess there is no point because we are driven to make this mistakes over and over until we learn or burn ourselves to the ground, I don't even know what I'm talking about anymore, I guess it's time to give up trying to justify hatred we will always be at war be it for oil, for land, belief and most of all glory.
