In these times of financial insecurity I was wondering whether people know what poker sites do with our bank rolls. An analogy can be made between banks en poker sites, in such a way that poker sites only have a certain percentage of the players' bank rolls liquid to function properly. So does anyone know what they do with it. Do they invest in bonds, stocks? Is it secured in a savings account? Are some sites more save than others?

to be safe, you should lessen your exposure online and withdraw some of your money to be safe. and yes some sites are safer than others. i'd stick with the bigger sites. |

# Is my PokerStars account balance used for your operational expenses or is it kept in a separate account?
# PokerStars is proud that, under special banking arrangements, an amount covering the total of all players' account balances is held in segregated accounts, not used for any operational expenses. These segregated accounts are managed by one of Europe's leading financial services groups. These arrangements ensure that PokerStars can at all times fulfill its obligations towards its players, and provides further reassurance that players' funds are always secure with PokerStars.
financial services group? what is that, sounds like a hedge fund, why aren't they more specific... |

This is done by pretty much anything you can deposit your money into and there's always the risk of them going broke.
I wouldn't be withdrawing my money from a Poker site because of it, though. |

Internet is now a scarce luxury and only the rich and famous enjoy hot meals and gasoline...The rest fight for whatever crumbs that fall of the rich ones table...
I'm one of the lucky ones since I had a bankroll, the value of the dollar has doubled in the last 2 weeks (seriously...doubled) so I'm doing good...
This is a seriously fucked up situation lol...running out of time now so I can't describe it properly...but it's fucked lol. |

This is a bid harsh...
The Icelandic government is not going bankrupt at all...
But the 3 leading banks pretty much are...and they are about 11 times bigger than the Icelandic GDP...
On a sidenote, the Gordon Brown is a huge idiot that's kicking us while lying down, trying to use the situation to gain political favor...fucking douchebag..
At times like it's sic weird studying business and economics in the university lol...my teacher was almost in tears yesterday talking about the situation, the main line being "I don't know what to say, what we're experiencing right now is something that isn't in any textbook there is..."
weird shit...

-"There is a lot of fear in society and there are people who are losing everything," Bubbi Morthens, an Icelandic rock favorite, said Wednesday after singing at an impromptu midday concert in central Reykjavik intended to lift people's spirits.
Like many of his compatriots, Morthens did well when Iceland was riding high, accumulating considerable wealth. But when the government seized control of Iceland's third-largest bank, Glitnir, last month, Morthens said he lost his life savings, which he had invested in the bank's stock.

hahah that hurt your feelings? as recent as one year ago Iceland were big spenders buying up companies all over the world and now it turns out they never had the money to pay for them unless they got extremely lucky, I dont think all the people who are now going to get fired from their jobs or lose the money they had in the bank are crying in sympathy for your nations failed business adventures (gambles) |

Unreal to abuse laws made after 9/11 against a "friendly" country. The Netherlands handled this situation a lot better.

The defensiveness comes from zorglub talking about the situation as it is in ANY way limited to Iceland...
We're seeing the excactly same situation with numerous banking institutions, for example Royal Bank of Scotland and many many many other...so it's imo idiotic to talk about the "icelandic gamblers" and some bs like that...
The devastating scale you're talking about comes from several reasons, mainly that the icelandic banks were/are far larger then the whole icelandic economy, secondly that Gordon Brown decided to use the situation to gain political following by using anti-terrorist laws to cripple Kaupþing, who had gotten the chance to try and stay afloat...

Where did you see me mention that this is in anyway limited to Iceland? you seem paranoid to defend your nation, I will let you in on a little secret, we had the same gambling guys in banks here in Denmark and one bank needed to be saved by the government and we all have to pay for their gambling habits.
its a gamble many people would take because if it works you get rich in stock options and golden handshakes and you get a great resume, and if it doesnt work well nothing really happens and we all have to pay for their losses. Only difference is that Iceland obviously took even bigger gambles than our banks compared to the national economy |
