U really think someone who played Poker all his life and made millions with it doesnt know about the most easiest poker concepts ?
Phil is not as good as todays online powerhouses , but for sure he isnt as bad as people here make him.

hillarious.

I am pretty sure he had a reason for this laydown. ( whatever reason outside of poker mathematics this may have been)

120K up for grabs, it doesn't matter what you br is, you should be taking the game seriously.

Didnt even need to put his opponent on AA/KK, if he put his opponent on AK or any overcard, he might have a feeling that card came up. Statistically speaking it might not be the right move but eh, he's won a bracelet, who else in this thread did? I don't believe Hellmuth is the greatest player ever but he's certainly not a donk. You also have to consider the stacks and the previous play from his opponent.

I don't know but I wouldnt call him an idiot for the laydown, I would however call him an idiot for the time he spent thinking about it.

you sound like those retards who comment the youtube poker videos

man what. at the risk of being levelled i have to call you out on this post. this is really ignorant and wrong. you are badly mistaken if you think all hellmuth does is play poker and degen gamble. i would not be surprised AT ALL if he is worth over 100mil, guy is huge into business and investing and has a TON of captial to work with. big bucks from endorsements in the last few years since the poker boom and 20+ years of playing poker before that on top . whatever hes worth its a fkload more than 15 mil, and whatever he decides to spew on random gambling is nothing to him.

and that last line about his house is a pretty rotten thing to say. what makes so many internet pokering nobodies such jealous resenting haters when it comes to hellmuth? is it that hard to handle to when you see someone you think plays worse than you getting all the praise and winning at life? do you think you deserve all that hellmuth has because you might be able to play a lot of spots more correctly? that is not the way the world works

if you ask the casual poker fan who the best player in the world is, they will say Hellmuth

and whats wrong with this?

fwiw i thought the clip in op was massively entertaining and thought all that laughing from 3:30 onwards and the dynamic between hellmuth and mikey made for great tv. i laughed along with it. hellmuth is great for poker who cares if all the recreational enthusiasts think hes the best? it was a personality and a story that made our game huge (moneymaker) not the 'intricate beauty of nl holdem the cadillac of poker'. this is what makes people happy. when i got into poker i thought the sickest possible players ever were phil hellmuth, johnny chan and mike mcdermott and it was super awesome then. you think id have given a shit about the awesomeness of poker if i was forced to recognise the true 'best' was actually some socially inept young male who 12tables online for 12 hours a day and makes sick plays that i cant understand? would anyone?

jesus just looking at the other guy in the hand with hellmuth who had the AQs is a clear example of why its way better hellmuth is the one in the spotlight with all the attention and big endorsement bucks and adoration of donks than most top internet mtt players

he's not dicking around i can assure u of that

i had the horror of playing with him for 12 hours

hes not just doing this for tv. he will ALWAYS get TV time because of how much he cries and how big his ego is and how famous he is. he doesnt really need to do much to reinforce it. he will always be in the spotlight

and hellmuth's 12 bracelets are because he played every tournament ever for the last 20 years or whatever? + he wins most of his bracelets in small fields. of course he will have 12 bracelets over such a long period, especially with the small fields & poor play in the past

and kets right

hellmuth won life a long time ago

his personality and act is certainly genuine but he is incredibly smart about it and exploits his fame for his own personal gain to an unreal degree

its also quite sick how well he plays off what he says and his image against fish. for good players it's pretty see thru and pathetic, but it isnt hard to see why it works vs a lot of people

i think the same could be said about taylor caby and his poker business. he thought of an even more lucrative way to make money in the poker business and ran with it while playing on his strengths; teaching. it didnt matter that he was one of the best for a few months. shit if i ever discovered a personal strength from poker (i'd say it was resiliency to bullshit and being shit on) and could make money with it i'd drop this game in a heartbeat with all the skill/dedication that it takes to make real money.

He is an entertaining clown and very EV+ for poker in general, i still dont respect him as a person nor a player.

I gotta disagree with u there. I think he snap-shoves this off-camera. I've played with him a bit too, he talks tight, but seems to play just as loose and spewy as ur avg MTT pro needs to play.

but think of this hand from a marketing perspective instead of a $EV perspective

He folds and is wrong: he's still able to drain about 5 min. of TV time, which includes shit-talking with matusow and even an interview with matusow and the host about the hand. He turns out to look like an idiot and a lot of people will hate him more, but whatever he gets a lot more attention. Its sort of a "there's no such thing as bad publicity approach". This thread wouldn't exist if this was false.

He folds and is correct: every noob would be in awe of his godliness and soulreading abilities. There would be threads praising him all over the internet and he would get a ridic amount of YouTube hits on this hand. He would probably boost his popularity by at least like 5%.

He shoves: gets 4k worth of $EV or whatever, but hand just ends. BORING.

A great example : This thread already reached 4 pages with many argues. Need i say more ?
I don't care about phil's play or whatever but he did a good publicity for sure.
He may be a whore or one of the sickest player of all time, but whatever he does he's in a win-win situation.

Something that I don't think most people know but should consider is that the kid who he folded to was the satellite entrant. He won his seat onto the show through a FTP sat, and was likely (I obv. cannot say for sure as I didnt see the whole table but just this hand) playing very tight b/c he

1) Wants to win the money and figures playing solid and tight gives him the best chance to get HU where anything can happen

2) Wants to keep playing on TV and with the other pros.

No doubt it's a bad fold in a vacuum but some of you need to think outside of the box. Also I think it's ridiculous that the majority of players calling him 'terrible' and a 'moron' etc, either don't play poker for a living or don't play tournament poker. Hellmuth crushes live NLHE fields, his style is perfect for them because of the image he has created for himself. He's a very smart person. I dont' agree with his tactics and personally I think it's lame, but that doesn't mean I can't see that he obviously knows what he is doing.
