And for what it's worth, most of the tv watching population think Dwan is a donk for the NBC HU exchange. A short browsing on 2+2 will show that. Nobody really cares that the matches didn't get played. They really have no idea whether or not they did, actually.

That's a good point, I've layed down pretty good hands OOP because I've got a strong read on one or two of the players to have a nutty hand. But in actually at the end of the hand they only had top pair or some worthless shit, when there are straights and flushes and what not.

I don't think Hellmuth is that good of a player, though his style works very well in certain situations, but that play with TT by durrr was pretty horrendous.

I'm pretty sure he clears 8 figures a year through UB and business ventures, basically he's playing that game like I would play 1-3 drunk at the wynn. EV is pretty irrelevant, its just whatever play gets the most attention.

Nah if Hellmuth were playing online on UB I doubt he'd make such a big spectacle about folding QQ with 15bb. He knows exactly what he's doing...I mean look at the guy's track record. Hes been playing live poker for decades and knows exactly how to advertise, in more than just 1 sense of the word. In that spot he made the most +EV decision he could ever dream of.

With 15bb hes got very little chance of winning or even cashing in the tourney anyway. He can turn sour grapes into wine by making a horrible fold and encouraging future action when the stakes really matter. Its a fact that Hellmuth isn't the best poker player in the world but he does a damn good job of keeping the game alive with energy. Who wants to watch a table of mutes throwing chips around?

Oh cmon Tilly checking FH definitely worst play ever. Hellmuth could have at least called the queens and tried to go for a second read on the flop. KK = worst laydown ever but that didnt happen. QQ understandable in very rare circumstances. Checking FH on river is just wtfomglol.

Myth wtf are u talking about, if this were a big pot with 2 decent stacks i could see your point, this is beyond ridiculous and u know it, phil helmuth is a stupid terrible poker player, not only because of this play but almost every play by him is just terrible.

It doesn't matter what other "publicity" motivations he coulda had when making this fold. First, it's all pure speculation. Second, when you sit down at a poker table for 20k (that's the buy-in for PAD, iirc) with $120k up for grabs, it doesn't matter what you br is, you should be taking the game seriously. The fact you're on tv should in no way interfere with your game. When you let outside factors interfere with your game that's called tilt. Tilt is a sign of an undisciplined (read: bad) player.

If Hellmuth did in fact make this fold for publicity that simply means one thing. His profession is no longer poker, but entertainment. He's turned himself into nothing more than a tv personality. Obviously there's nothing wrong with that, but if that's the case then it makes no sense to comment on his play beyond it's entertainment value. To put it another way, would it make sense to debate Kobe Bryant's chess playing ability from the perspective of a professional chess player?
