Im sure many of you have already heard about this. This week the worlds biggest collider will be completed and ready for experiments on SEP 10. Even though there wont be any collision on that date there will be a test on accelerating a proton to one millions %% of the speed of light. So basically nuclear physics will enter a new world. IMO this machine WILL put a milestone in the history of mankind. There will come discoveries using this machine that will affect the life of every human beings. This is not a movie or a Sci-Fi story. There will be discoveries of how world has been created.
There will be also a test of creating a micro black hole(Or the creation of micro black holes was the side effect of a test) This has the potential of basically destroying the planet even though the chance is very very small. In theory this shouldn't happen but there is no evidence for these theories. (Im too ignorant to know all the facts about the theories and the experiments so plz correct me if you know more)
Im not a physics guy myself but Im really excited about this. As for the risk. I belong to those group of people that I belive knowing some stuff worth dying for.

Surely near instant takes on new meanings when you factor in the relativistic effects of a black hole. Near instant for whom?

becuase i remember back in school doing physics and chemistry and stuff
if the teacher ever said "never do this/mix these/turn it up this high..." whatever it was
I would do it to see what happened.
What if theres a guy like me who actually passed his exams and went on to become a scientist?

seems like enough to call everyone opposing it morons -_-...
from what I understand, the experiments are carried out in a vacuum, so the miniature blackholes will never gain a critical mass to extend their gravity field to the walls of the containing chamber, UNLESS for some reason there are bits of atoms which somehow manage to sneak their way into the vacuum sealed chamber. If enough of these atoms went into the black hole, then it could potentially get big enough to swallow us all!
pretty fair way for humanity to end imo, we all die for the quest of knowledge of how we came to exist...ironic eh?

very nice catch. reading about the theoretical experience of falling into a black hole is pretty rowdy - from tidal effects from gravity having a much stronger pull on your feet than on your head to the effect on the light that reaches you (read: what you see looking back out as you fall in).
well the Scientific Policy Committee (SPC) which consists of 20 independent external scientists has connfirmed previous reports that the LHC is safe and there's no basis for any concern. According to Jos Engelen, CERN’s Chief Scientific Officer, " Nature has already conducted the equivalent of about a hundred thousand LHC experimental programmes on Earth – and the planet still exists.”
Dan Brown's fanbase of course has its doubts
new shit has come to light... a-and... shit! man...

Normal cosmic ray collisions routinely occur that are at or higher than energies of anything the LHC can produce. Worrying about the LHC creating a black hole that eats the planet is like the people who worry about incidental radiation from nuclear power plants when the amount and type of radiation they receive is approximately equivalent to the radiation they get from the sun indoors on a winter day.
As far as advancing physics, it really will be a big deal if they can discover the Higgs boson, which is one of the experiments they're planning to make.

I read a book a few years ago about a collider that generated a miniature black hole that grew exponentially in the middle of the earth over the course of a few years until it destroyed the planet.
That was fiction
The "black holes" created by CERN would be so small and unstable as to flash in and out of existence in the smallest fraction of time.
CERN is important because it is supposed to prove / disprove the existence of the quantum higgs field which is supposed to give mass to all particles.
will pretty much prove / disprove much super-symmetry / string theory

This experiment makes me wonder how much doubt/risk would we be willing to accept to go through with this. How certain is the scientific community that there's no imminent threat? 99,9%? Is that enough?
If poker has taught us one thing it's that people overestimate their abilities/knowledge all the time. And that makes me feel a bit uneasy about this.

under normal theories, a black hole cannot be created because there is not enough mass involved when the particles collide with each other. But under other theories that involves extra dimensions of space & time that we dont see in our 3 dimensional space, 1 time there is a possibility of formation of a miniature black hole. Theorists who believe this say that the energy density of the collidron will be enough to form this mini hole. If that happens, the hole will eventually grow and after a few decades or what not swallow earth. The time for that to happen varies amongst theorists, going from as short as 5 years to possibly billions of years.
Black hole is not the only catastrophic possibility, there are also other things hehe.

People will take a chance of getting killed in normal, everyday activities like driving a car, yet they find a threat in a scientfic experiment which MAY create something we are YET TO DISCOVER in space around us (and we've seen quite a bit of it, comparing to the size of our planet), which still won't be of any harm, if predictions of our theories are right. Talk about not being able to estimate some basic percentages.
Also, it would be fucking cool to destroy the earth like this. Oooops!

is the idea why black holes arent a big deal is that a black hole gets bigger as it eats up more mass? and there isnt anything inside the collider cuz its a vacuum.. so if there were a black hole created it wouldnt b a big deal anyway?
Its hard to make a easy buck legally, its impossible to make a easy buck morally.
Not really, a black hole doesnt start microscopically to later grow to an infinite size to devour the universe.
In the extremely unlikely case the collision creates a black hole it will be of a subatomic size, not big enough to devour earth, not even close and it will only exist for a ridiculous fraction of time.

So i wonder how did they think up all the sudden that they are going to get micro black holes? I mean do micro black holes exist in space? Or they were like well we have no idea what to say this new equipment will do so lets say something crazy. I mean before reading about this collider id never heard micro black holes mentioned. idk
i never got no fancy physics education or nuthin... but basically the gravitational power of black holes is related to the matter it contains. any black holes produced at cern (not even a certainty) would have been created with the energy of the colliding particles, so no black holes produced in the lhc could pull any matter in and would only exist for a moment anyway
On September 09 2008 01:57 n0rthf4ce wrote:
i dont think this one thing will be able to prove/disprove string theory tho, only most likely enforce it. but hell, wtf do i know
The main thing about the LHC is trying to find the so-called Higgs Boson (carrier of the Higgs field) which, under the 'Standard model' theory, gives matter it's mass. The Standard Model is not really related to string theory. Disproving or proving string theory probably won't happen from tests at the LHC (string theory is too vague and has a lot of blank spots at this time to actually provide some decent predictions about the universe which could be tested), but it could happen that some form of supersymmetry would appear, which would be an indication that there's more to string theory than just being the theoretical (but highly popular) gimmic it is right now.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the first real collisions later on. Probably nothing special will hapen on the 10th, they're just speeding up particles insanely fast (around 14 TeV).
they are just stirring shit up. The more publicity they will get the more money will get into research. thats what scientists want. its the same for about everything imo. jsut like breast cancer. with so much publicity its been getting all the money while other important diseases get nothing

Ok ok i might be a little bit bitter on this one but i mean c'mon use your common sense, all they want to do is actually prove the existence of black holes, theorically they should exist and astrophysicians observe in the universe the side effects they generate (you can't see a black hole for obvious reasons, since they actually "absorb" everything including light) but they are yet to actually "create" one and lack evidences of their very much existence.
All comes from the Einstein's theory about the Relativity, he proved on the paper they MUST exist but we're yet to discover how they're created and how they function. And a the only purpose of a collider is to simulate what happens in the universe and measure/observe the results, sometimes the experience lasts for fractions of micro seconds and are obviously not gonna trigger the end of times.
On a side note, one of their first experiment will be to find the "Higgs boson", and it would be a major discovery if they do.
there are millions things more interesting and entertaining than physics. like sex, food, drinking, diving, discos ... sex.., okay, maybe not millions but plenty. i am sure 99.99% of the people in the world don't give a shit about physics and don't want to know 'how the world started'. that's bullshit. i prefer to know how to always give orgasms to my girfriend. so basically those physican scientists are like 3k-4k and i am sure they all are the retards with big glasses that you make fun of when you see them at school/college. they don't enjoy sex, they don't enjoy discos, they are muffs and now they will try to destroy the world because they can't do nothing else. if you think for a second, what do you prefer - live your life and enjoy the SIMPLE THINGS that we know are the truth of real happiness or trying to know 'how the world started' but having the chance of destroying it. imo it's not worth it... too little useless information for big risk. there is always a chance to 'mess up' the things no matter what they say. so what will you do tomorrow if you know 'how the world started'. you will do NOTHING. you would not came feeling pleasure, you will not be rich, you win NOTHING. just a little more knowledge - one answer. so risking the world for an answer is not EV+. it's a joke. so no matter what will happen tomorrow for me and the 99.99% of the world the answer will mean zero.
i say we are living in a very modern world which has almost everything and we can live happy with what we have NOW. if we don't count the first and the second world war, nothing is threaten to destroy the whole world like that 'experiment'. and even after the world wars,in the worst case scenario there would still exist human life. now we are talking about not only destroying an continent or the planet, but the whole universe, the whole world. risk is NOT justifiable even if the chance of 'fail' was 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% and i'm sure it's much higher.

Hawking stated in brief history of time, that if quantum physics is corrent, black holes should shine (emit energy), and probably even more than stars. This would be created by spontanoeus creation of photon-anti photon pairs that would normally anihilate moments after, however if the anti-photon pases the events horizon while photon stays on 'our' side of the universe, it should look as energy emiter from outside. Also, the effect would be quite significant, and by absorbing anti-anything, black hole would lower it's mass, possibly even disappearing after some time.

creating a black hole and what that could possibly lead to, people who start these doomsday prophecies really have no clue. the amount of energy created in these collisions is gonna be huge, but not close to the amounts created all the time in the atmosphere.
people of course will always catch on to these theories due to man's general fear of not being in control. that's scary I admit.

Some people in 3rd world countries get on a boat and try to escape from their governments to the free world. Putting the whole world at risk should probably not be decided by the scientists aloone tho =O (majority vote would probably not agree with capaneo)
However, is this such a risk? =/
I saw Sheitan mention Einstein above, theory of relativity is pretty wicked hard to grasp (I don't come close).
I work at a company doing computer systems etc for satellites, it's kind of cool that the satellites have to be compensated for time going slower in the satellites (as observed from earth - theory of relativity) than on earth itself. Otherwise they would navigate way off =o

While Oppenheimer and co were developing the Manhatten project there was some concern that the detonation of an atomic bomb would ignite the hydrogen in the atmosphere and turn Earth into a fireball, annihiliating every living organism in seconds. They did it anyway.

oh
i say we are living in a very modern world which has almost everything and we can live happy with what we have NOW. if we don't count the first and the second world war, nothing is threaten to destroy the whole world like that 'experiment'. and even after the world wars,in the worst case scenario there would still exist human life. now we are talking about not only destroying an continent or the planet, but the whole universe, the whole world. risk is NOT justifiable even if the chance of 'fail' was 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% and i'm sure it's much higher.
you're obviously wrong about this.
edit: just read his first post, suppose there's no need to respond to him anymore.

How does the 'some concern' in your example not equate to anything but the uneducated 'some concern' in this one or am I being levelled?
And they wanted to kill a fuckload of civilians anyway, surely even more is a bonus.

some ppl r starting up a giant machine, testing it.. not going to collide anything which is what your worried about for no reason.

You don't have anything to worry about Today all they're doing is testing the machine. They won't be shooting particles until like Oct 10th I think.
Although it has gotten a 'Y2K' twist to it because a few radicals 'scientists' claim it'll create a blackhole. But if this is true the blackhole would be so small + would dissapate.

actually it's kinda funny but the CERNA rap explains it all very well
Sorry i'm just too lazy to type it all xD
Lots of benefits to this research.
I dont know why you guys say if they created a black hole it would be so small it would dissapear again, since the nature of a black hole is that it sucks up matter and grows. A very small black hole could grow very big in a matter of milliseconds, just like a nuke, the black hole sucks up one atom, get more mass and can suck even more matter up even faster
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left

Firstly it'd be created in a vacuum. Secondly, Hawking radiation. It needs to gain a critical mass to suck in enough to counteract the energy lost, it won't and therefore it'll burn out.

there are millions things more interesting and entertaining than physics. like sex, food, drinking, diving, discos ... sex.., okay, maybe not millions but plenty. i am sure 99.99% of the people in the world don't give a shit about physics and don't want to know 'how the world started'. that's bullshit. i prefer to know how to always give orgasms to my girfriend. so basically those physican scientists are like 3k-4k and i am sure they all are the retards with big glasses that you make fun of when you see them at school/college. they don't enjoy sex, they don't enjoy discos, they are muffs and now they will try to destroy the world because they can't do nothing else. if you think for a second, what do you prefer - live your life and enjoy the SIMPLE THINGS that we know are the truth of real happiness or trying to know 'how the world started' but having the chance of destroying it. imo it's not worth it... too little useless information for big risk. there is always a chance to 'mess up' the things no matter what they say. so what will you do tomorrow if you know 'how the world started'. you will do NOTHING. you would not came feeling pleasure, you will not be rich, you win NOTHING. just a little more knowledge - one answer. so risking the world for an answer is not EV+. it's a joke. so no matter what will happen tomorrow for me and the 99.99% of the world the answer will mean zero.
Don't make me ashamed that im half bulgarian plz.
Edit: Btw, it seems almost everyone in Bulgaria believes this...

Chance of creating black holes is existing. Chance of them being harmful is not.
the odds of them being created are neglectable, we dont worry about 0.00000000001% probabilities or we wouldnt be able to move in fear of dying every second from a lightning.

The vacuum might slow it down but there would still be matter for the hole to absorb since there is no such thing as a perfect vacuum, and do we know exactly how big a black hole has to be to have that critical mass?
