Hawking stated in brief history of time, that if quantum physics is corrent, black holes should shine (emit energy), and probably even more than stars. This would be created by spontanoeus creation of photon-anti photon pairs that would normally anihilate moments after, however if the anti-photon pases the events horizon while photon stays on 'our' side of the universe, it should look as energy emiter from outside. Also, the effect would be quite significant, and by absorbing anti-anything, black hole would lower it's mass, possibly even disappearing after some time.

I have a solid physics background but not to that point im afraid, i read some interesting articles about "White Fountains" and the theory about "time travelling" but i think im 10 years of school short to debate about this... This stuff is VERY interesting and i wonder what thoses scientists will find during the experiments they gonna run, this is exciting.

I really doubt that Swiss the most neutral harmless country would agree to this if there was any real chance of some bigass mistake that d destroy the planet or something like that.TSLto lal "destroy the universe" what ? :D You know there is a countless numers black holes in the universe right? & lol of fearing aliens. Most people are just too ignorant and think we r alone in the whole fuckin world ... are u fuckin serious woot ? People are mostly scared coz of the movies with lil green people which is just ridiculous srsly...If someone wanted to invade us we d be gone long time ago imo Anyway getting back to the main theme there is great hope about learning new epic stuff from this project if it does run properly i hope they find out something that was worth the risk .... otherwise it was a pleasure posting in this forum see u in the black hole :D

would you really believe the 6000 scientists involved in this to be moronic madmen?

creating a black hole and what that could possibly lead to, people who start these doomsday prophecies really have no clue. the amount of energy created in these collisions is gonna be huge, but not close to the amounts created all the time in the atmosphere.

people of course will always catch on to these theories due to man's general fear of not being in control. that's scary I admit.
like, come on, some guys preach about Jesus and 2000 years later we still go up early each sunday to sing in his glory! that's fear=]

Some people in 3rd world countries get on a boat and try to escape from their governments to the free world. Or just because of a better "free" life on the other side (EX: the whole Berlin wall deal during cold war). Lots and lots of people died and are dying trying to live a better life. Many people get executed on daily basis trying to gain freedom for their kids/country men.
IMO this is the same thing. Finding the truth worth dying for sometimes. There is risk with EVERY experiment done. Its always been like that and it will be. The bigger the goal the bigger the risk.

Using this machine we can prove facts that will change the life/view of many.

Does finding the truth about some scientific theory talking about the very basics of our existence worth putting the whole planet and all the lives at risk?
Absolutely yes! But thats just my opinion.

Putting the whole world at risk should probably not be decided by the scientists aloone tho =O (majority vote would probably not agree with capaneo)

However, is this such a risk? =/

I saw Sheitan mention Einstein above, theory of relativity is pretty wicked hard to grasp (I don't come close).
I work at a company doing computer systems etc for satellites, it's kind of cool that the satellites have to be compensated for time going slower in the satellites (as observed from earth - theory of relativity) than on earth itself. Otherwise they would navigate way off =o

from what ive seen and read this isnt really a risk at all. They are sure they cant create a black hole.. if thye do by accident, which is the .0000000000000000000000001% chance.. then the thing will disappear rly fast.. not swallow the earth.

While Oppenheimer and co were developing the Manhatten project there was some concern that the detonation of an atomic bomb would ignite the hydrogen in the atmosphere and turn Earth into a fireball, annihiliating every living organism in seconds. They did it anyway.

Moral of the story: Scientists are reckless motherfuckers. Cross your fingers, kiddies.

How does the 'some concern' in your example not equate to anything but the uneducated 'some concern' in this one or am I being levelled?

And they wanted to kill a fuckload of civilians anyway, surely even more is a bonus.

Researchers used brain scans to show that when straight men looked at pictures of women in bikinis, areas of the brain that normally light up in anticipation of using tools, like spanners and screwdrivers, were activated.
