there is probably more chance research done at CERN eventually leads to discoveries about the universe leading to space travel etc. allowing for the expansion, strengthening and preservation of humanity than its destruction
+ev imo

This experiment makes me wonder how much doubt/risk would we be willing to accept to go through with this. How certain is the scientific community that there's no imminent threat? 99,9%? Is that enough?
If poker has taught us one thing it's that people overestimate their abilities/knowledge all the time. And that makes me feel a bit uneasy about this.
But just a bit. |

im like the only person here that thinks there is just as much reason not to do it as there is to do it?
like why risk it? i dotn give a fuck what gave mass to all the particles..
even if its a 1 in a billion chance.. i still dont c how thats worth risking the entire planet..
there is tons of other cool shit these scientists could go do rather then fucking with my life.. imo not fair to let a group of like 20 or 200 scientists risk my life in any fraction.. i didnt get to vote on this shit.
worlds good the way it is, stop fuckin with it.

This kind of expriment its not only to disprove or prove string theory, and its not for the intellectual debate of a bunch of people debating the origin of the universe, quantum physics have several practical applications. |

under normal theories, a black hole cannot be created because there is not enough mass involved when the particles collide with each other. But under other theories that involves extra dimensions of space & time that we dont see in our 3 dimensional space, 1 time there is a possibility of formation of a miniature black hole. Theorists who believe this say that the energy density of the collidron will be enough to form this mini hole. If that happens, the hole will eventually grow and after a few decades or what not swallow earth. The time for that to happen varies amongst theorists, going from as short as 5 years to possibly billions of years.
Black hole is not the only catastrophic possibility, there are also other things hehe. |

As someone who is a "physics guy" I gotta tell you that this thing is really being overhyped. |

meh im not too happy about this partly because i dont understand the payoff we're going to get (solid, not possibly) but mostly because scientists dont know what the fuck they're talking about a lot of the time and theres just nothing to disprove what they're saying at the moment |

People will take a chance of getting killed in normal, everyday activities like driving a car, yet they find a threat in a scientfic experiment which MAY create something we are YET TO DISCOVER in space around us (and we've seen quite a bit of it, comparing to the size of our planet), which still won't be of any harm, if predictions of our theories are right. Talk about not being able to estimate some basic percentages.
Also, it would be fucking cool to destroy the earth like this. Oooops! |

This is how all the black holes in the universe was made, except for the original one, which an ancient species tried to copy |
