from what I understand, the experiments are carried out in a vacuum, so the miniature blackholes will never gain a critical mass to extend their gravity field to the walls of the containing chamber, UNLESS for some reason there are bits of atoms which somehow manage to sneak their way into the vacuum sealed chamber. If enough of these atoms went into the black hole, then it could potentially get big enough to swallow us all!
pretty fair way for humanity to end imo, we all die for the quest of knowledge of how we came to exist...ironic eh?

all the people super scared of dying due to a huge black hole, honestly it would be like existing one moment and then gone the next...
if i had to choose a way to die, near-instant compression due to a blackhole would be it
Surely near instant takes on new meanings when you factor in the relativistic effects of a black hole. Near instant for whom?
very nice catch. reading about the theoretical experience of falling into a black hole is pretty rowdy - from tidal effects from gravity having a much stronger pull on your feet than on your head to the effect on the light that reaches you (read: what you see looking back out as you fall in).
well the Scientific Policy Committee (SPC) which consists of 20 independent external scientists has connfirmed previous reports that the LHC is safe and there's no basis for any concern. According to Jos Engelen, CERN’s Chief Scientific Officer, " Nature has already conducted the equivalent of about a hundred thousand LHC experimental programmes on Earth – and the planet still exists.”
Dan Brown's fanbase of course has its doubts
new shit has come to light... a-and... shit! man...
they pretty much admitted that they have no idea whats gonna happen, just that it "shouldnt" be dangerous to the existence of humankind.
Yea. Shouldn't.
Very reassuring.

Normal cosmic ray collisions routinely occur that are at or higher than energies of anything the LHC can produce. Worrying about the LHC creating a black hole that eats the planet is like the people who worry about incidental radiation from nuclear power plants when the amount and type of radiation they receive is approximately equivalent to the radiation they get from the sun indoors on a winter day.
As far as advancing physics, it really will be a big deal if they can discover the Higgs boson, which is one of the experiments they're planning to make.

I know they already had one which had some kind of a ridiculous diameter. Do you know how much bigger this one is supposed to be?
The 2nd biggest collider is in US (NY). This one is about 50-100 times more powerful (Which is insane) and its layed under 2 countries!
In US everyone is happy as long as all the prices are rising. Unless its crude oil - Marc Faber

They can't give a definite answer either way because they can't honestly say that they know for sure. But there's no reason to imagine it will.
cool video, quite impressive for high school students actually. The girl isn't bad a rapping either...

I read a book a few years ago about a collider that generated a miniature black hole that grew exponentially in the middle of the earth over the course of a few years until it destroyed the planet.
That was fiction
The "black holes" created by CERN would be so small and unstable as to flash in and out of existence in the smallest fraction of time.
CERN is important because it is supposed to prove / disprove the existence of the quantum higgs field which is supposed to give mass to all particles.
will pretty much prove / disprove much super-symmetry / string theory

lol that rap is actually a pretty decent synopsis of what this is all about

so if they make little black holes, can we get to keep em in our wallets 'n shit?
Think I have one in my wallet already as the money seems to always go somewhere.

im like the only person here that thinks there is just as much reason not to do it as there is to do it?
like why risk it? i dotn give a fuck what gave mass to all the particles..
even if its a 1 in a billion chance.. i still dont c how thats worth risking the entire planet..
there is tons of other cool shit these scientists could go do rather then fucking with my life.. imo not fair to let a group of like 20 or 200 scientists risk my life in any fraction.. i didnt get to vote on this shit.
worlds good the way it is, stop fuckin with it.

LOL silly human, thinks he has a say on his fate 100% of the time
must suck when almost half of the table has slept with ur GF tho. - Awesome Hero
Would be awesome if they managed to create some awesome disaster out of this, but I'm thinking they'll discover a new particle and whatnot which turns out to be the infinite source of energy and we can stop using oil and nuclear power all together. Or maybe create a sandwich that doesn't fall on it's buttered side.
