Here is a pic of volunteers watching the Beijing Olympic rehearsals, they look VERY entertained:

So on this note, who is all going to see the games, anyone actually seeing some events? Last summer games I saw live were in Atlanta which were pretty cool, probably 100x better than the beijing games will be because of the massive crowds and shitty smog but anyways, discuss. |

they forbid any contaminating activity for a long time to clear the skies of beijing and the other cities, i saw the photos on the intrawebs.
Also the opening ceremony and organization in general seems superior than any other olympics in the past since this is China's way to say "oh hi 1st world, we will take over the world now thx". |

if you take time to research about pollutants and how china measures levels of air contaminates you will see that they fall well below UN and most respected standards. You can be ignorant if you want but my statements aren't being 'shot' worthy. Just because the sky is blue doesn't mean the air is safe and with regards to crowds, who are you trying to fool? |

baal wtf, honestly.
is LA, NY or Mexico city hosting the olympics? have you been oblivious to all the participants who compete in outdoor sports not showing up for the olympics on the intrawebs? The air is fucking shit there, complete shit. Do I think they are spending massive amounts of $ to make it awesome, yes I do but will it be amazing, we will see. I think that it won't be the best games ever and I also think that is pretty ridiculous that they have to literally manufacture a reality in beijing to create an atmosphere appealing to the majority. IF they want to make 1st world impressed, maybe they should be awesome to begin with and not become some an idolized version were they force over half the population in the area off the roads, stop industrial companies from business for over half a year and pretend like this is how they operate 24/7, yeah beijing rocks, lolz. |

Yes, pollution in Beijing was pretty bad. And yes, they are forcing cars off the street and shutting down factories to improve the air quality. But they are doing it to improve Beijing's atmosphere for the olympics, and they are certainly not pretending "this is how they operate 24/7."

Highcard stop talking bullshit pls ...
Noone s pretending to be operating like that 24/7 they've made a public official statement that AUTOMOBILES ( yes u cant use ur car ) are forbidden to use during the olympic games(im pretty sure i heard that over the news i am about 95% sure not fully tho) .They are making absolutely everything they can to prevent any further pollution of the air for the time being. You should give them credit and not whine about it.What the fuck over 30million people are living in Beijing find me a city that big that a clean air.. in fact find me a city above 1mil that has clean air.I can even take u to a place here at the seaside that i doubt there are more than like 300k ppl and when u go out on the street u just cant breath normally.Yeah i see u didnt create the thread with the idea to start a for or agaisnt the beijing olympcs arguement but u sure turned it that way.Bad thing is China s still ruled by comunists which is pretty fucked up shit and also there are a lot of Al-Quida terrorist attacks attempts plans some of which were discovered already according to the news. That again might be just some bullcrap but hey who knows... if u ask me that be d the perfect place to cause chaos
Aaanyway im really looking forward to Friday to see the opening. The one in Greece was just legendary coz of the history they have and China is probably the country with the oldest origin to exist ( yeah yeah i know we all came from Africa and shit so they prolly aint in top10 oldest ones... who cares). So im expecting a lot from them and im pretty sure they wont disappoint the audience |

Beijing has a pretty terrible record when it comes to pollution and general cleanliness, but they cleaned the city up really well. They instated a ton of regulations and built a park with an artificial mountain and self regulating lake 2x the size of Central Park. Also, Chinese people are some of the most hospitable people in the world--look for them to put on an amazing show. |

i mean what do you define as good olymipics? the air quality? lets go have the olympics in tanzania then....
This are the olympics with more media coverate, probably with the most money invested and definitelly will be the best opening and closing ever, also they are going to be extremely symbolic for China and Asia, i really dont get why you are negative about them. |

I guess I wasn't trying to be overly negative but the original comment had some negativity, where I was going with it was that fact that it is unfortunate that some of the should be participants will not be going because of various health/air risks. The picture and talk about the ceremonies was a joke but the pic is actual footage of volunteers who clearly are tired. If I had to guess I would say that such ceremonies will be spectacular overall but like I said previously I think it will be absolutely packed and hard to get around the actual venues/ease of access will not be as amazing as previous olympics, This isn't a cause of china being highly populated, it is a fact that each games from now on will just be more and more packed and harder to get around due to obvious reasons. |

What do the Olympics, an international sign of peace and community that transcends the boundaries of government rule or religious bias have to do with the Chinese government, or any government for that matter? Its the biggest sporting event in the world meant to develop friendly ties or strengthen previous ones between peoples of different nations. Do you even know the definition of a fascist government? I usually don't like responding to blind ignorance because I know most of what I have written here won't pierce your silly ignorant skull, but this time its very irritating, especially when you are insulting the pride of an entire nation, one in which I happen to have been born. |

Yeah sure Peachy, China is a great place where the human rights are the most respected in the world, it's common sense. I leave you with a nice article you should read to be as ignorant as me:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_in_the_People's_Republic_of_China
and from RSF itself: http://www.rsf.org/rubrique.php3?id_rubrique=174
"Its the biggest sporting event in the world meant to develop friendly ties or strengthen previous ones between peoples of different nations"
That's why they should never hold the olympics for that matter.

And i have nothing against chinese people, i just blame the chinese government if you didn't get it yet. |

Wikipedia is not a reliable source. The Chinese government is far from perfect, as all governments have their flaws. Do you think I, or the Chinese people love the government for the Cultural Revolution? How about the Tienanmen Square Student Massacres? (or do you even know what these are?) China as a country is not her government, and its full of wonderful people who want nothing more than for the Olympics to be a success. But regardless of what I have written, the Olympics is meant to be, as I had written previously, a symbol of peace and international community. To say "fuck the olympics" is pretty ridiculous. This is my last response in this argument--I often find the more I try to argue logically the more the responses piss me off (see "Anyone got any info?" thread).
edit: I see you've edited your post so I will edit mine. The second article you linked me to has correct but biased information. For example, while the Chinese Government has always had a horrible human rights record and still does, it has lessened the harshness of many unfair laws against the Tibetan people. While I also agree that Tibetans have been treated poorly and unfairly, I don't agree that the Olympics should be sabotaged and threatened with terrorist-like activities. This is one of the reasons for the heightened security measures (which the article did not mention). How else do you expect the Chinese government to protect a city full of Olympic athletes and visitors who are under threat? Even the Dali Llama has said that the issue between the Chinese Government the Tibet should be resolved in a peaceful manner, but the new leadership has only responded with violent measures thus far. |

Peachy, i don't like to argue either over the internet this is just plain stupid since people are not the same as if they were having a real conversation, the nicest guys can transform into the biggest douchebags online and i sincerely don't give a fuck.

I apologize for the comment insulting your intelligence and for calling you ignorant. RSF is certainly a reliable source and believe me, I am not a fan of what the Chinese government has been or done for the last 30 years. I think the Olympics are a great thing though, and I suppose that is a difference of opinion or a difference of point of view. For me, it represents a milestone for the Chinese people, who have finally not only risen in terms of production, technology, and international importance, but also represents a growing country that needs less and less of its bullshit government and leans more towards democracy every day. I guess if it represents the Chinese government for all its ugliness (which it shouldn't), boycotting it would be logical. |

No need to apologize maybe my first post was too short and you couldn't know i was blaming the government and not the people, i strongly believe China will open up in the coming years and we will see a "peaceful revolution" that will give back freedom and inalienable human rights to its people. And i think we have a role to play in this, Beijing is a premium occasion to show to the dictators who are baffling human rights on a daily basis that we actually CARE by boycotting it and everything they can organize. The message is simple: If they want to be a part of the "free world", they have to stop oppressing chinese and tibetian people.

The Olympics are a good thing for China particularly because foreign media will likely gain unprecedented access to the country. China is not going to be able to keep a lid on things or create publication bans on certain issues with so many people visiting the country all at once. That being said in terms of human rights the U.N. and other international pressure systems can only do so much. There comes a time when the people of a country have to decide for themselves that they are unwilling to put up with a situation any longer -- i.e revolution. There are certainly actions that can be taken by the international community to encourage positive changes in China to happen more quickly but they have to be done tactfully by the international community. |

What do the Olympics, an international sign of peace and community that transcends the boundaries of government rule or religious bias have to do with the Chinese government, or any government for that matter? the olympics are the biggest sporting event,
but you're really getting it wrong if you see ideals behind it. I mean,it surely involves financial/commercial benefits etc but it's clearly not closely related to the ancient olympics and its philosophy in a million ways.
It's a big fiesta, which means buisiness, and has been used several times for political expediencies (I'm not saying that the ancient ones were perfect too).
But yea ,I guess developing friendly ties between people is a side benefit (frienship between nations has nothing to do with it though)

The most amazing thing of Lezak's win is that Bernard didnt actually mess up or something. Bernard swam (relay advantage taken into account) around the former world record. Lezak was almost a second faster. Wow, if he manages to get a swim like this individually, he can potentially crush the World Record... |

it does take some type of above average. something, whether its a larger torso or larger lung capacity. Michael Phelps has a larger torso which in tests has proven, to be an adavantage in swimming. The lead rowwer on the Great Britian row team, which has won gold the last two olympics has the largest lung capacity ever measured. Yes, practice is required to highlight these genetic advantages but practice alone will never be enough.
"Unbeaten for 27 consecutive races until the Lucerne World Cup in 2007, the British four won gold at the World Championships in 2005 and 2006. Pete recently posted the largest recorded lung capacity at 11.68 litres and is continuing his training to represent Great Britain in the coxless four at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing."
"Michael Phelps' remarkably long torso is like the hull of a boat, his coach says, allowing him to ride high on the water. His ankles, knees, elbows and shoulder joints are rubber-band flexible. His wingspan is 3 inches longer than his 6-4 height.
But for all of the genetic gifts that make him a master at defying drag in the water..." |

I'd bet wariner takes gold in the 400m individual. and that the US men sweep 1 2 and 3 in that race.
I'll also bet that the 100m goes
1. bolt
2. gay
3. powell
I will also bet that the young 800m runner from oregon runs a heroic race and medals.

I never watch the olympics. Not a big fan. But I also am not a fan of them being in beijing cause the chinese gov't is fucked... Tibet, darfur, burma, and so on. Plenty of issues that I don't agree with. I wanna be clear though, I only have a problem with the Chinese govt and the sadistic fucks in the following video, while I have no problem with the rest of the Chinese people. I think that most of em suffer a lot due to the fucked up government.

And before I got a mile of stupid replies to the video, let me clarify that I'm not against eating meat or overall killing of animals. I just think before you kill em you should treat them humanely (those cages were fucked up) and that when you kill em you try to do it quickly and painlessly. Skinning them alive just ain't cool.
and on a lighter note:

I was hoping to see some ballers throw out some big gambols but I might be willing to throw out a smallish bet |
