so i was watching BBC`s planet earth, and they show this bacteria that grows 1 cm a day, lives very deep in caves, where theres deadly amount of sulfuric acid (caused by mix of fossil deposits with water) that actually reprocess and spit out very strong sulfuric acid. so got me wondering, if bacteria can adapt to sulfuric acid, they can adapt to anything? so im with baal on this one ;o |

Sulfuric acid drips from the walls and deadly levels of hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide belch from the numerous springs in this cave. Amidst these hostile conditions, bacteria are alive and well at ph 0.5, and a rich invertebrate fauna thrives in Cueva de Villa Luz.

NOVA: So what are the most "extreme" of extremophiles?
Northup: The highest temperature that I see routinely—though this waffles a bit in the literature—is 113°C [235°F]. In terms of pH, I think they've found organisms that can live below zero pH. I realize that sounds impossible, but there are actually negative pH values. And there are ones that live, I believe, at 13 and 14 pH, but I am less familiar with them.
And there's an organism, Dinococcus radiodurans, that can live at really high UV concentrations. Carlton Allen of the Johnson Space Center in Houston once did experiments to determine how he could be sure that future space missions weren't bringing back organisms from Mars to Earth. He subjected organisms to really high UV rates, and Dinococcus could still grow. He found that he had to up the amount of sterilization, because this organism can live at really high radiation levels.
NOVA: Does that suggest it or other extremophiles could live on Mars?
Northup: I honestly believe that there could be organisms in the subsurface of Mars, especially if, as has been suggested lately, it has water.

The closest mankind has been to erradication was with the bubonic plague's second pandemic... the Black death, pretty much erradicated over 1/3rd of the world population and over half of china. |

we didnt have much info on viral plagues back then though, so im 50 50 on the fact that we would be able to stop and isolate a plague befor it irradicates 1/3 of the world pop and even less. but i aint no microbiologist |
