I can't figure out what the deal is with the Peace Corps. Why is there so much marketing on the website? Why do they have recruiters? Is it basically a public relations gig for the USA? I did a lot of research today but not enough. Do these places really need the services offered? I don't know. I think I would prefer a 6 month tour of duty rather than a 2 yr tour of duty.

Then I am looking up non-profits. It's all fundraising, manipulating the media and lobbying policymakers. Greenpeace seems pretty solid but there weren't any openings that made sense for me.

Then I am thinking why don't I use my skills in history and the humanities to teach these kids how to write, how to seek the truth, and wake them up a bit.

I do really wish there was a computer that decided what jobs I should do for me. I am just applying to coffee shops and cafes. I think I might be dead in the water anyway since I can't start until June 25. I just get a feeling doing this mundane work for the masters to make capital is a backup for something more. I am picking coffee shops mostly because my sister and brother in law and I want to start a coffee shop some day and make it a collective. Plus I think it would be a relatively chill job to do for say 24-32 hours a week while I can continue to figure this stuff out.

Here, have some poems. Your struggles sometimes remind me of Bukowski,

Ahhhhhh, those were quite nice. I could sip coffee and read Bukowski poems all morning.

My sister has "Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead" tattooed on her and has been trying to get me into Bukowski for a while. I never really delve deeper than the few poems people send me but I really did enjoy those.

Merci

ugh, I am so bourgeois. I read poetry and say thank you in French. Who was that guy from The Possessed? Stepan Trofimovitch Verhovensky. Ugh.

How did you curate those k4ir0s?

I need more. i could just google I'm sure but I want some suggestions from the guy who just suggested me those. What about short stories, novels? Although, I actually kind of just like his poetry and want more of that so I can sip some coffee and read them tomorrow morning.

I haven't read any of his books yet, just his poetry. I'm only familiar with his poems because I used to read them while commuting on the bus back and forth from college. His poems were the only reading material I had on my phone, so when the internet cut off as it often did, I only had his poetry to read.

I think people read Bukowski for two reasons 1) he lived a shitty life and it gives you a new perspective. if he can make it out to the other side, then so can you. 2) the bad doesn't have to be as bad as we make it out to be. it's possible to find peace and contentedness in shitty situations and he communicates this through his poems.

I'm sure you agree with this one:

Ah, see he flips the negative into something positive (as he often does) and makes us see that there's beauty to be found in the craziness and sadness.

Well, I mean he's certainly no Rimbaud but he's obviously a miserable drunk. I am not condoning the behavior in the video. Of course, it's deplorable. I still enjoy his poetry. I was a miserable drunk at one point too. I never treated a woman like that but that was just never in my nature. Maybe he was beaten as a child or his father beat his mother and him or he's just a miserable son of a bitch. They are all unfortunate hands to be dealt in life. I appreciate some of his poems.

What English poets would you suggest Loco?

Only English.

I put up with translated Rimbaud and cry that I can't speak French. It's the same with Flaubert (to a lesser extent in novels) but I really hate the idea of translated poetry. It's a bastardization.

I'm on an English poetry and literature kick. I do have "Infinite Jest" on a list. I have to get to that at some point but poetry is really what I am looking for.

Emily Dickinson, William Blake, John Keats, Robert Frost, T.S Eliot, Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Wordsworth to name a few.

Ok, I'll get to them when I can. Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost are fire though.

Those might have to hold for a while. "Infinite Jest" is absolutely brilliant so far. DFW!

But, I'm going to Emily Dickinson's house in Amherst in less than a week! I have to see where that genius took place.

Heh, I thought about that video while posting above. Nevertheless, I still find his poetry inspiring. If you watch the entire documentary you will see Bukowski walk through his childhood home and talk about how his father beat him on a daily basis. While his behavior in that video is ugly, it's sort of expected... there's more to the man than a 1min clip

I can still find joy in reading Bukowski, listening to Wagner and watching Polanski movies, despite their character flaws.

Yeah, his father was a miserable and abusive son of a bitch

If this source is truthful:

Looks like David Foster Wallace did not treat women well either

I sure know how to pick them. Although something about that piece doesn't seem completely honest or at least it seems bitter, resentful, and biased. I'm sure that viewpoint makes me a misogynist in this day and age. I guess mostly I don't see how the writer can be obsessed with David Foster Wallace's work and then hate it and regard it has garbage. "Infinite Jest" is one of the most exciting novels I've ever read and it is a joy to jump into the skin of David Foster Wallace for a while. Even if everything said in that article is true "Infinite Jest" is still one of the most interesting pieces of work in literature that I have come across.

In dealing with a lot of alcoholics you just never know. I am deeply troubled and I don't even know why. I think that is why I relate to Bukowski and David Foster Wallace. Once, my sister pissed me off, I don't even remember why and I lost my temper and shoved her into the corner of the couch making her nose bleed. There was another time my mom had worked all day and she came home and made a whole chicken and I don't even remember why but I picked up the whole chicken and dropped it on the floor. My mom slapped the shit out of me (maybe the only time she's ever done that) but I didn't have any inclination to hit back. I don't know why I am going into this. I am doing another 5th step today which has got me kind of anxious. I really need to get some of this stuff off my chest and be honest about it and have a conversation about some of this stuff.

I think in David Foster Wallce's case he was just deeply troubled and a control freak and for some reason had the inclination to use violence. Abuse like that seems to stem from control and power issues. It's just interesting though why sometimes privileged upbringings lead to a certain existential despair.

Oh well, I don't really want to play armchair psychoanalyst. I am going to continue my hike with David Foster Wallace on the "Infinite Jest" trail. It has been quite lovely thus far.

Yeah, I knew that DFW was abusive but I didn't want to let you know until you were done with Infinite Jest.

Obviously, I keep saying it over and over, people don't have those types of problems in a vacuum. I understand the structural factors that lead to those behaviors and that's why I'm an anarchist and I don't reduce people to their absolute worst traits while ignoring the rest. It's just important not to idolize people and overlook their flaws, but ultimately, they were determined to turn out the way they have.
