- Jarjis Danho was expected to face promotional newcomer Dmitry Poberezhets at the event. However, Danho pulled out of the fight in mid-April citing an injury. He was replaced by Chase Sherman on April 18. In turn, Poberezhets was removed from the card for undisclosed reasons and replaced by promotional newcomer Rashad Coulter on May 2. Coulter is a local Texas fighter, which is where this event is at.
- The 2008 Olympic gold medalist in freestyle wrestling and former UFC Flyweight Championship challenger Henry Cejudo was expected to face Sergio Pettis at the event. However on May 10, it was announced that Cejudo suffered a hand injury and the bout was canceled. Pettis will receive his show money, if he successfully makes weight Friday morning, sources say.
- A featherweight bout between promotional necomers, Jared Gordon and Michel Quinones was expected for the event. However, Gordon pulled out of the fight on the day before the event due to stomach illness and as a result, Quinones was removed from the card.

Poirier vs. Alvarez
Poirier is taller, has a longer reach, hits harder, has better cardio, has better BJJ, and has above average TDD and can get back to his feet if needed. Alvarez's wrestling has always been overrated, and he has shown in the UFC that his wrestling isn't that good, and he gasses if he tries to use it a lot.
I think Poirier will be able to use his reach to get around Alvarez's striking guard and can catch him if he tries to do his old striking style of jumping in to throw a straight-right punch and darting out to the left (he used to do it in every fight but only tried it in his UFC debut against Cowboy Cerrone, then stopped doing it in his next fights because he got owned by Cerrone's counters and knows other UFC fighters will be looking out for it -- it's best for lower level fighters).
Also, Alvarez's last fight was in November 2016, where he got demolished by Conor and was knocked down 3 times before getting TKO`ed on the ground. I already favor Poirier to win, and I am more confident in Poirier knowing he's facing a guy who is coming off a title loss (many people end up losing their next fight after a title loss/title fight loss) and was knocked out in that fight.
JDS vs. Miocic
JDS already beat Miocic in their first fight.
"But Miocic has improved since then and is the champ!" = JDS has improved as well. We thought he was done when he went into the Rothwell fight, but he showed a calm demeanor and his offensive and defensive striking skills were upgraded. JDS also has more 5-round fights and will know how to pace himself better while going against a guy who he already beat.
Also, Miocic's current 4-fight win streak isn't impressive, imo:
• He TKO`ed Mark Hunt on the ground in the 5th round of their fight after wrestling him the entire time and getting him tired. (Size and wrestling)
• He easily TKO`ed Andrei Arlovski in 54 seconds of Round 1, a guy who everyone knows has a terrible chin and has been finished in his last 4 fights in a row. (gift win)
• He then KO`ed Fabricio Werdum after Werdum literally kept chasing him around the octagon with his hands down, throwing ugly arm punches and was trying to close the distance. Werdum literally ran at a fast speed into the finishing blow. Werdum got clipped and rocked at one point, but kept doing the same thing that led to him getting KO`ed. (dumb performance and essentially a gift win)
• He then came back to beat Alistair Overeem after Overeem dropped him and could've gotten a TKO, but chose to stop punching and jump for a guillotine, which failed, and Miocic came back to easily TKO Overeem with GnP. (once Overeem can't protect his chin, he loses, which is why he is so focused on movement and technical striking instead of throwing big bombs these days -- dumb move by Overeem, which set up a gift win)
You can make an argument for those 4 wins above, how they were against Top 10 fighters, but imo, Miocic hasn't beaten a legit Top 5 fighter in his last 4 fights without there being some luck on his side (Hunt and Arlovski aren't Top 5). Whether it's being a much bigger fighter with wrestling against a smaller fighter with no wrestling skills; or facing a guy with the worst chin at Heavyweight; or facing a guy who is running into your punches and has his hands down the entire time; or getting dropped and luckily not getting GnP`ed, Miocic hasn't proven anything to me lately that says he is superior to JDS and can beat him in a rematch.
JDS opening at +175 at 5dimes was laughable. He's currently +145, and I expect the lines to get closer during the next 3 weeks.

Within 7 hours of my last post, JDS went from +145 to -105.
I forgot to mention that along with JDS improved striking, he is also the much better kicker and has the ground game if it goes there (doubt it will unless JDS gets the TD). JDS chin and cardio allowed him to get through Miocic's technical boxing in their first fight cuz Miocic was forced to respect his power punches that he kept throwing.
Miocic might be a little more technical than he was in their last fight, but so is JDS, and JDS has the kicks as I previously mentioned.

Like JJ too but then I always do. Dangerous fight for her though

Just a few years ago, I though Cain had taken JDS's soul. Who knew that so relatively shortly after, JDS would be so close to the title again while the guy who beat the living shit out of him for roughly 45 minutes of Octagon time is kinda forgotten. Crazy sport
Only bet I am considering right now is JJ at -160. I like Dos Santos and Masvidal but odds are not that good anymore

Don't bet JJ at -160.
A lot of people like Andrade straight up, so you'll get better odds on JJ during the next 2 weeks.

I'm on a break from betting. I don't like to bet when I'm busy with university.
That being said, I play DraftKings every week when there's a UFC card. Betting and playing DraftKings takes two different types of skills and ways of thinking, and I can't do both when I'm busy with school.
I'll have JJ and Andrade in my DK teams, but I don't know who my final pick is just yet.

My goal is to become an English teacher (secondary education, aka high school).
I graduated in 2016 with a BA in English (focus in teaching). I'm currently in an English Teaching Credential program, which is 3 semesters long. In 1 month from now, I'll be done with the 2nd of 3 semesters and, in December 2017, I will complete the credential program and become a licensed high school teacher.
As far as teaching goes, I've been doing 20% teaching and 80% observation in a real high school classroom for the past few months. From August to December, I'll be teaching at least 50% of the time during this last semester. Also, I was offered a summer English teaching job, so I'll be doing that since it's only 1 month long and will still leave me with 1 month of vacation afterward.

What are some books you would like to teach to your students?
Have any suggestions for summer reading?
I have The Gift by Nabokov lined up to start. Finished The Stranger by Camus a couple of weeks ago and liked it. I am always looking for some good reads.

My favorite genre is Young Adult (YA) literature.
As for the books I'd like to teach my students, it's tough to answer. I currently teach an English Language Development (ELD) classroom, and will continue teaching an ELD classroom next semester along with one freshman Literature & Writing class. My mentor teacher let me teach my ELD class when we were doing an introduction to poetry, and then a few days later, I followed that lesson up with a 2pac poetry lesson, where I basically taught my students how to use read and break down a poem (in a basic way) while using the 8 poetic devices we studied a few days prior. As for the freshman English class I'll teach next semester, the majority of the texts are already set in stone, so we'll be covering stuff like Romeo and Juliet and The Odyssey, to name a couple.
While I enjoy reading, English majors and teachers don't get to read as much cool stuff as you'd think. We're generally too busy reading a shit ton of textbooks and required novels in university, then we're super busy reading new textbooks and re-reading old textbooks and reading endless essays and responses once we finally get a teaching job. I may be an English teacher, but I won't lie and act like I've read stuff by Tolstoy or Nietzsche (I'm more into the most well-known YA authors).
If you're not into YA literature, I only recommend reading Native Speaker.

Okay, I'm definitely spamming you with book requests, have a hard time selecting books these days, I usually end up reading things recommended by people like Bill Gates or Larry Page. Pretty cool that you decided to take on one of the most valuable, yet unacknowledged professions in the modern world.
P.S. I've read a bunch of Russian Classics, they might be extremely valuable in sense of progress in literature, but I find most related problems in them quite dull viewed in perspective of our time. American/English classics are so much better imo.
P.S2 I'm done with off topics now :D

99% of people betting this fight say they like Benitez. They keep mentioning that he's a good kicker and has foos power, but haven't said anything else.
If you watch Barzola last 3 fights, you'll see he is getting better each time. He showed improved striking in hia laat 2 fights, ans mixes it up good with his wrestling. He got robbed against Bochniak, and I bet on Bochniak in that fight.
I think Barzola will be able to use his wrestling to dictate how this fight goes. Benitez has decent TDD, but he needs space to strike, and I don't think Barzola will give it to him enough to win a decision.
This UFC card is in Texas, which is famous for bad judging. Mexican fighters get more love from the judges than anyone else.

Thanks man, I was thinking on betting on him but them decline, and today I realised that you pick him to win. He is from my country and he is well know for his wrestling but I also noticed that his striking is improving on each fight. I am going to watch Benitez last fights and make a decision. Thanks : )

Though he's in that stage where he's a beast athlete, young, and improving at a really high rate so it's hard to guess where he will be at in each of following fights. Plus age does seem to be catching up.

As you said Yair is improving so quickly I'm just excited to see him against one of my all-time favorites Edgar. I truly hope Frankie wins as he's been underrated throughout his career and is the epitome of a warrior who gives it his all (including his health) for us. I see him as a 135er who became champion at 155 in a day and age where that should not have been possible. I also thought he beat Benson and thus should have continued this insanity at 155. Then at 145 he has basically beaten all the monsters they put in front of him except Aldo. I'm just a huge Edgar fan. The fight where he lost that round arguably 10-7 against Maynard but still came back is my all time favorite.
I made my decision and I am betting on Joanna, Cejudo and Barzola. Anyone betting on this event? Please post your bets.

Cejudo vs. Pettis is off due to Cejudo injuring his hand.
OP updated.
----------
It is with regret that I have to announce I have had to pull out of my fight with Sergio Pettis this Saturday at UFC 211 due to injury.
I really want to apologize to the fans and to Sergio Pettis for this unfortunate event.
About two weeks ago I injured my hand sparring, and went to the doctor to get it examined after I was unable to grapple or punch. The doctor looked at x rays and informed me my hand wasn't' broken, so I assumed it was just bruised or sprained. I stopped using my hand for the next week and a half to allow it to rest as much as possible, and I had multiple prp treatments as well as an ultrasound in hopes of breaking up any build up or swelling.
After arriving in Dallas on Tuesday evening, I hit mitts with my striking coach to get my timing down, and after I threw my first punch, a sharp pain shot through my wrist and hand.
My team and I contacted the UFC to see if a cortisone shot would be allowed. The UFC sent me to a hand specialist, and he told me I had a cyst in my wrist as well as a ruptured capsule with the possibility of a tear in the ligament. He informed me the cortisone shot could possibly do more damage than any benefit and told me it would be insane to fight. He contacted the UFC doctors and informed them that my wrist and hand were unfit to fight this Saturday.
I will schedule an appointment with a hand specialist next week and figure out the next course of action.

Yair said his coaches asked for this fight, and he was fine with fighting Edgar.

Made bets on Poirier, Maia, Edgar and JJ
Larger bets on JJ and Frankie. Though thinking about it, I'd be more confident in Frankie if it was a 5 Rd fight
Not so confident with Maia because Jorge definitely looks like a filled out, strong Welter (little confusing since he fought at 155 with no known weight cutting probs at all). But then I was also a little confused as to how Maia made Gunnar Nelson look like he had never grappled before so going to ride the Maia wave
Thinking JJ by late stoppage. Bigger threat than Gadelha early because of the power that Andrade will have early but think she'll have even less for JJ than Claudia did in Rds 3-5
Somehow still undecided about the Main

Angela Hill: Why I'm Picking Andrade to Upset Jedrzejczyk at UFC 211
"In my fight I felt like I hesitated when my corner called for step-through knees and outside elbows, but when I finally threw them they worked and I was able to cut her on both cheeks before the final bell. Joanna is particularly good at those things, so I'm expecting her to sting Andrade a few times as she charges in. Also, Joanna being bigger and longer than me -- it's going to be a lot harder for Andrade to pressure her to the fence where it's easier to score points from flurries and takedowns. Joanna doesn't typically start kicking until her opponent is hurt but it's doubtful Andrade will give her enough to space to throw them anyway.
At the same time Joanna doesn't move her head as much as I do, so if she does get swarmed, she's going to absorb a lot more damage. Just judging by looks, I think Andrade hits harder than Karolina Kowalkiewicz, who was able to drop Joanna in her last fight, but Andrade is not as precise. If Andrade tightens up her striking and lands something clean it's going to be lights out.
Another thing to look at is the whole wrestling side of things. Andrade was comfortable standing with me, but if she does decide to go to the ground, she has strong takedowns. She's not amazing anywhere, but she's strong and commits to whatever she does, so wherever she feels her opponent feels uncomfortable, she'll try to put them there. I think Joanna has exceptional takedown defense (especially when she digs her fingers in her opponent's eyes in the clinch), so if Andrade is unsuccessful with taking her down but keeps trying, there's a good possibility she'll gas. I think Andrade's best chance of winning is to keep it standing and not waste energy on takedowns like Claudia Gadelha did in her and Joanna's last fight.
One last aspect I'll touch on is Andrade's gas tank. She's a hook machine and I was pretty surprised that she was able to keep that up all three rounds. This weekend she's fighting five rounds, but I don't think that'll be a problem for her. Joanna, however, cuts a lot of weight to make 115lbs and has never fought someone who pressures and throws body shots like Andrade. Andrade has a good chance of tiring Joanna out in this fight. Andrade typically lunges in with a right hook to the body and then loops the left hook over the top and this is a tactic that has served her well against taller fighters."

Having a pretty raw, even if powerful, striker plan to basically have a kickboxing fight with a former Muy Thai and kickboxing champion can't be the way to go
Gotta make JJ at least wary of the takedown by putting in honest effort on some or feinting for them. Agreed on lights out if she does manage to feint and land a clean, looping overhand. JJ's chin definitely isn't granite. Possibly her only real weakness besides a lack of 1 hitter quitter power

the kid needs to be tested and its the right time imo. though you could argue otherwise. if he loses he still has a lot of time to recover. he's still young enough to get those losses and get them back if that makes any sense.
im rooting for him. we need another superstar thats not conor.

Jared Gordon is out of his fight due to food poisoning or something.
From 14 fights to 12 fights. Lucky for us, we basically have a regular sized PPV card, and all of the best fights are still intact.

JJ face looked fine to me.
Other people said this is the first time she used a towel during weigh-ins. I don't remember if she did or not.
Also, you'll probably notice how she and Andrade are super friendly. It's cuz they're friends and JJ will be defending her belt for the first time against someone eho she doesn't have a problem with.

I think Edgar is gonna do Yair like he did Swanson but maybe worse.
I think Andrade wins a decision.
Hoping for Maia but feel pretty on the fence about the result.
Slightly favor JDS

Great card full of close match ups.
Love Alvarez and Maia at + odds. I also think Stipe melts JDS. He has all the tools to expose Junior weaknesses and even in the 1st fight when he was a lot greener, you could debate that he won the fight. Ben Rothwell was just a perfect match up for JDS, Stipe on the other hand is always going to be a tough one.
Probably will play Frankie also because of the odds, fascinating match up. Yair is still very raw but can pose big problems for Edgar with his speed, length and striking, who has been in a lot of wars and is getting up there in age.
- 20 bucks on JJ + Barzola
- 20 bucks on JJ + Masvidal ITD

I thought of the cub fight too. But Frankie had more time there in a 5 Rd.
Yair is also longer and fights longer than cub. Could easily see Yair successfully playing matador while racking up points w/o much time left for Frankie to make something happen. With that said, hopefully Frankie catches a kick and drives Yair into the ground. Kinda regretting making him one of my main bets but let's go get em Frankie

I wish judging would catch up with that aspect. Awhile ago but an example was Condit vs Hendricks. Hendricks did almost nothing on top besides receiving Condit elbows from the bottom but every judge just gave em to Hendricks for nearly harmless takedowns

No1 really blaming Eddie. Intent or not, rules are there for a reason. Feels like there should be a commission panel of some sort to help Ref make a decision if there's going to be a stoppage like that before they make the decision whereas nothing can be done about a late/early stoppage while action is in play. Instead, just some guy nodding along to whatever Herb is saying

Yes, he had a knee on the ground because of a previous knee which was illegal in texas but legal elsewhere

I dont know, Woodley isnt a lose figher who gets in and out of range fast like Masvidal is, Woodley waits tensly and explodes, that is a style that gets clinched easily, I dont think Maia should shoot for double legs, Woodley would sprawl easily, he should simply walk woodly down mummy-style to the cage trying to trigger the right-hand rush, with a tucked chin and stiff arming him and elbows blocking (like Rory did) he should be somewhat safe from the bomb and Woodly would be rushing into the clinch

If Jessica Andrade wins, she'll become the second gay UFC champion alongside Amanda Nunes, who is also Brazilian.

Andrade is supper passive in this fight. She knows she can't win on the outside, and she is only following JJ instead of cutting her off and swinging, which is something Lineker would do.

Walking after your opponent and eating punches = not showing balls
Andrade is known for closing off the distance and swarming her opponents. She isn't moving her feet well at all, just small steps as she either eats punches or kicks or misses with counter strikes.

She didn't take a step back all 25 minutes while taking pretty ridiculous accumulated punishment. Marched, sometimes in a semi run. Not just walking. Not sure what more you want on a balls/heart perspective. Moving her feet badly has nothing to do with that

Lost in that quick first round ruckus was the fact that despite it not actually being the cleanest shot ever that put JDS down, he did drop on all fours then with his forehead on the ground...getting punched and offering up no defense with Stipe looking up at the referee with a wtf why aren't you stopping this shit face. That referee was obviously none other than Herb Dean. Someone really needs to drug test him on top of the fighters

I hate Woodley, but he's got some of the best TDD in the game. He is insanely strong too, even if Maia gets the clinch I think Woodley shrugs him off.
Plus I think you're optimistic about Maia's striking defense. Maias main defense against strikes is shooting double legs from a half mile away. Trying to walk into the clinch = KO'd imo.

oh I totally agree with you, its very likely Woodley just shoves him off or that Maia simply eats that silly right hook but what I was saying is that Masvidal didnt really expose anything in Maia that Woodley could use, his fighting stance isnt fluid he cant strike and get out of takedown range like Masvidal did, he can defeat Maia but in a different way.
I still think thats the way Maia should fight, keeping a stiff left arm elbows out and practicing deeping his head to the right and walk Woodley aggressively to the cage and trying to create the most clinches and scrambles possible because if he stays at punching distance trying to time a double leg it is going to be a very boring fight where Maia simply can never complete a takedown and Woodley throws 1 punch per minute.
Perhaps he could try to trigger that weird Woodley thing does when he is against the cage and time the takedown there, but Woodley would be stupid to do that but who knows.... JDS keeps backing against the cage lol

I hate Woodley,
cos hes black?

Woodley s probably the most underrated top tier UFC figher atm and Maia is the perfect matchup for him

Woodley's whiny path to the title (KO win vs a decent but mostly one dimensional Dong Hyung Kim and a split decision vs an overweight Gastelum) was one of the more undeserving routes ever taken. Then started calling for money fights not quite 20 minutes removed from winning the title while trying to avoid the actual contender, Wonderboy. Then tried to dodge a rematch after having a draw while playing the race card. And that's not mentioning his previous transparently fake, self serving Ferguson bull crap that he only ever spotlighted when it was in the public news. Meanwhile Maia had to quietly stop the streaks of Laflare, Magny, Gunnar (the true underrated 170'er), Brown, and Condit before being forced to face a surging Masvidal while having to hear Woodley spew some more dumb crap about how dumb he was for taking the Masvidal fight. I'm really unsure how a reasonable MMA fan could root for Woodley against Maia
With that said, I'm in the same camp of thinking Woodley is a terrible matchup for Maia. Hopefully it just makes it that much sweeter if Maia can manage to choke him out

How exactly is he "under rated"
Odds were really close when he fought Lawler for the belt. Lawler was -120
And odds were really close in the Thompson rematch, and the fight actually was really close.
I think Woodley is a top tier WW, easily in top 3, and thats what most people consider him to be.
And i do agree he is a really bad matchup for maia.

Rooting for Maia. Maia should just throw himself on the mat and work from there. Woodley looks scared as fuck when against the cage and he just goes on rampage from there. I don't know how to expect Maia to walk him down because he isn't threatening much other than takedowns from what i've seen.

lol I dont know what you mean by throw himself on the mat lol, he has to take woodley down, woodley is not going to jump on his guard obv.
And Maia can walk him down because Woodley doesnt hold ground and cant punch while moving backwards so he moves backwards trying to create a collision Machida style, but without the timing and setups but Maia is stiff and slow and has no head movement so theres a pretty good chance he gets Knocked the fuck out if he doesnt use his arms properly to block those bombs

Doubt Woodley is going to move backwards nearly as much as he usually does. He's not going to be in there vs a Rory or a Condit or a Thompson...pretty aggressive strikers who, in a way, forced him to back up because they at least had the ability to light him up in space in the center. Something Demian clearly can't do. Could see Woodley doing it a little just for the purpose of trying to time Maia's shoot with a knee or uppercut but I mean...he doesn't really throw a lot of either of those

Actually, when I think about it Woodley barely won against a really weak Gastelum at that time in a 3 round fight. Surely he has become better since then, but Maia is better than Gastelum as well, except Gastelum probably has a much better punch game though. Then again as far as i remember, Gastelum couldnt get a TD and played on the feet and thats why he lost... been a long time cant remember

Woodley sure shouldnt back down, but most fighters cant just change the way they fight overnight, after all they have been doing it all their lives, especially "woodley type" of fighters who heavily rely on their athleticism, so If Maia were to press forwards I would expect Woodly to be way more trigger happy but still backpedaling.
I think Maia sould take a page of Werdums book and develop a very loose kick-heavy striking game but not falling in love with it and losing sight what makes you good like Dong Hyun Kim did.

And why exactly would Woodley go there? That's only way Maia can win.
I also want Maia to win tho.
Maia is one of my favorite fighter as a person... and woodley is the exact opposite lol

He tried that
Maia tried to play the striking game a bit more and had pretty poor results. Seems like he's hellbent on the constantly shooting takedowns the entire fight. Thing is, if he doesn't get to rest on your back for 3 minutes every round he gasses badly. He was gassing horribly against Masvidal then was allowed to rest for like 3 minutes in round 2 when he pulled guard and Masvidal stupidly didn't pull away and got reversed into a TD. Then again Masvidal stupidly threw a high kick in round 3 which got him taken down. I feel that was Masvidals fight to win, he was stuffing all the poor TDs in round 2 and Maia was super gassed, but stayed in Maia's guard way too long.
Against a guy like Woodley who isn't gonna give up easy takedowns that allows him to rest, I expect him to be defcon purple gassed by the 2nd or 3rd round, like he was with Rory. He was so tired he could barely stand up.
In his last 5th round fight he was so tired he laid on his back for like 2 minutes of the round refusing to get up and got a point taken lol.

Well kicking at punching distance is awful I'm not saying he should try to strike with strikers more like training a lot on long distance kicks, flashy spinning kicks and anything thats not normally done because of the dangers of being taken down, those stuff can easily give him rounds if the opponent refuses to engage and close the distance.
But yeah I agree that its a good matchup for Woodley the most likely scenario is that he stuffs all the takedowns and Maia gasses hard, hopefully Woodley will KO him in later rounds and doesnt cruise to a 3rd super boring title fight

That's exactly what i mean. Throw himself on the mat. Why do referees stand fighters up anyway? Why isn't just laying there a viable strategy? :D
Something weird has to happen for Woodley to be taken down. Even if he is taken down he'll probably just try and power out of it kinda like he does when backd against a cage and just acts out.
