How good is James Vick at keeping range and fighting at range, on a scale of 1-10?

soberstone   United States. Feb 01 2017 09:01. Posts 2662

Soooo much value on some of the fights, I already laid a lot.

Someone faded Hamilton super hard because hes obviously a bottom tier HW but the guy he is fighting is a terrible outsized LHW jiu-jitsu player with bad wrestling. Hamilton looks almost like a lock at -175, this must be a favor for taking the Ngannou fight.

I don't know but not great, Trujillo is quicker and will probably test his chin early, but he's pretty durable, coin toss fight, longer it goes better chance Vick has

Man really tough fight for the Korean Zombie coming off over 3 years layoff and several shoulder injuries during and after the Aldo fight. He should be the better fighter, but Bermudez is a really tough solid guy and thats a lot to over come.

He should really be getting a tune up fight.

Remember Bermudez got dropped by a jab from Lamas.

But still iffy about betting Jung, I need to see the weigh ins for this fight before I place any bets.

I remember back in the day that korean bw pros were still allowed to play some BW in the army, that and considering martial arts would actually help you in the military, he most likely continued his training during his stay there didn't he?

His fight vs Aldo was one of the first fights I've seen in the UFC as far as i remember, although I do remember JJ vs Machida which was way earlier

Vick isn't consistent when it comes to keeping people at the end of his jab and kicks.

Trujillo is an inside fighter.

Vick can win by decision or by late finish, while Trujillo can only win by TKO.

Hometown Fighters

- Alex Morono
- Chas Skelly
- Daniel Jolly
- James Vick

Picks:

Bermudez > Jung - Odds are probably a bit wide, Jung is the more dangerous fighter but I just can't pick him due to inactivity and Bermudez is still improving slowly. With the game evolving the way it has, I don't know how good Jung that fought Aldo stacks up against todays division, and it probably won't be that same guy anyway.

Grasso > Herrig - Virtual lock, Grasso will be fighting for a belt soon enough, the hype is real

Trujillo > Vick - Polar opposites and initially I was favoring Vick but after re-watching his last KO to Dariush, I think his chin might be done. One of the most vicious KO's I've ever seen. Agree with Rican's assessment that Trujillo needs a KO and probably early to win, I just think he'll get it.

OSP > Oezdemier - Weird match-up, seems like an obvious case of them wanting OSP to get his confidence back and get back in the W's. Other guy isn't good from what I've seen,. just a mildly powerful Muai Thai striker that is smaller and slower

Hamilton > Fortuna - Fortuna is an undersized LHW jiujitsu player who's awful, Hamilton may not be good but he's gonna be massively bigger and hits way harder and is a much better wrestler

Andrade > Hill - Odds are insane now though, way too wide. Open under 2:1, now Andrade is -550. Line is off - Hill has gotten much much better really quickly and if she can keep it standing, she can win

Blaydes > Milstead - One of the few HW fights I think goes to decision a lot. Both guys have great cardio and chins, Blaydes just a much better wrestler and I'm super high on him

Skelly > Gruetz - Should be a lock, Skelly 10x better athlete, should be able to find a sub fairly easily or outpoint him if Gruetz TDD holds up

Ramos vs Tanaka - Dunno, only fight I haven't studied yet

Torres > Rawlings - Torres decision via volume and speed advantages (+ hasn't been KO'd by PVZ lol)

Price > Moreno - Price was super impressive in his debut vs Thatch, he's improving really rapidly, he looked horrible on tape before that fight. Moreno is bad and lucky as hell to have any W's in UFC.

Rountree > Jolly - Not confident, toss up if it goes past 1 but early on Rountree is a monster

Bets (subject to keep adding)

I think you read this one in reverse.

Price is game, but he's super green and he didn't look good at all in his short notice debut against Brandon Thatch. What was impressive in that match was Thatch, and how he managed to lose his 4th fight in a row by submission, and he looked worse than usual when the fight went to the ground. I think Thatch set a record for losing 4 times in a by submission in the UFC... ...most guys would've been cut before they could hit 4 submission losses in a row. Anyway, to get back on topic, it was essentially Thatch looking bad while Price didn't look like anything special. If you have time, go back and re-watch the fight twice -- once from Thatch's perspective, and once from Price's perspective -- and you might have a different opinion of Price.

Regarding BJJ, Morono is a black belt, while Price is either a purple or brown belt. I remember Price was given a belt while in the cage after her beat Thatch, which hella people were laughing over. Morono is also a black belt in Taekwondo, and he has the striking and aggression advantage in this fight. Moreover, Morono is the hometown fighter here.

And, if you care about the level of past competition for both of their opponents, Morono has the better resume.

----------

Someone else just posted this transcript:

Morono - best fight camp I've ever had, marathon training, almost 6 months of training, all 100% serious, no injuries, I couldn't have trained harder, I grew up watching Fedor, started boxing as a kid to lose weight, 10 years ago, trained at home in houston for this one, at 4 different gyms, I run the classes in my Gracie gym, I'm not lacking anywhere for styles or training partners here in Houston, I had a torn ACL for the Noke fight, got that fixed thank god, I'm a BJJ black belt, I know my striking is good, I know he likes to wrestle, but I will keep it standing, I train with the best black belts in town, was training for Sheldon Westcott (he was a southpaw), I respect Niko (orthodox), it's my hometown, alot of invested / tickets, I respect him for taking this fight, keep the range, throw my strikes, wrestle when he gets close, they also offered it to Belal Muhammed but he couldn't make the weight, Niko is a warrior, took the fight, there's alot of Niko fights on youtube, I watch alot of tape, I love strategy, I love this sport, Niko likes to throw down, looking forward to a war, I do so much grappling and wrestling training, if the takedown is there, I will go for it, but I love striking, I hope he brings it, I love the battle, I'm ready to die in the Octagon, I'm 179, easy weight cut, strict fight week diet, I'm leaner than my last fight, I live in Houston, 20 mins from my house, 200 people I know going to the fights, I have shirts made, there's an electric energy, I will do better at home, I will make the most of it, I will gun for the KO, but I think I'll catch him with a sub, would like to fight Akhmedov after this.

I thought Niko looked relatively good vs Thatch considering how good of a striker Thatch is and how bad I thought Price was prior to the fight. As you mentioned, he's super green - which is why it's not surprising to me that he is making vast improvements quickly. Morono may be the better submission grappler, but I don't think he can rely on taking down Price, who is a better athlete and a better wrestler.

On the feet, neither guy is good, but I think Price just has the technical and physical advantages. Morono is not a good striker at all. Vs Noke he won a robbery but clearly got picked apart on the feet, and vs Moontasri, I'd have to re-watch but I think it was just Moontasri's epic weaknesses (bad cardio, no volume, bad wrestling) on full display.

Anyway, I've already pulled the trigger on Price so no point now unless I want to hedge out, which there's no way I will after reading Conor Rebuesches breakdown (it simply confirms that another guy who knows what he's watching sees it the same way as me, not that I'm necessarily correct):

Alex Morono (13-3-1) vs. Niko Price (9-0): Price likes to strike. Six of his nine wins are by knockout, and according to the man himself, striking was the plan going into his short-notice debut against Brandon Thatch. Upon being hit cleanly a few too many times, though, Price took down Thatch. Price is a quick scrambler and uses pressure on the ground to force his opponents into transitions they stand little chance of winning. You might say he is actually a better grappler than a kickboxer, despite his preference for swangin’ and bangin’ in the cage. That essentially makes Price a supercharged version of Morono, whose submission game has not reared its head as often as expected in his two UFC bouts. Whereas Price is too wild for his own good, Morono is virtually technique-less. On the feet, he is a whirlwind of hooks and overhands and yet manages to keep up with better strikers. Price has the physical and technical advantages in many aspects of this matchup, but Morono is not to be counted out. He was a sizeable underdog in each of his first two UFC bouts and won both. The tentative pick is Price by unanimous decision.

I will give Morono that he's super durable and has very good cardio. He's a grinder that won't piss a fight away. We'll see if that's enough.

How the hell does Chas Skelly make 145? He's just so massive. Same w/ Vick at LW, but frankly I think Trujillo should slim down a tad and try and fight at 45.

It was 1-1 until that 1 uppercut landed with 1-2 seconds left. Round 2 was shitty anyway, so not clear who was gonna win it.

Pretty clear that Price was speeding up and Morono was slowing down, as evidenced by the flurry. No way to know for sure though, could be biased because I was rooting for him.

Morono's striking still improved greatly, he clearly looked better than ever before, and so did Price as expected.... but he was getting touched up by the more confident fighter early

Only question in Torres vs Rawlings is if Torres can be aggressive and get a finish or if she grinds away a decision. I hope she goes for it.

Morono was slowing down, but you are biased.

It was a shitty fight. Round 1 was gross until Morono landed the spinning backfist. Round 2 was gross until Price landed the big uppercut. Both strikes happened during the last 5-10 seconds of each round.

Morono's striking looked the same to me, just less aggressive. Price still has shitty striking like I expected.

Andrade vs. Hill is a 3-round fight.

The point spread is +5.5 points. It was +200 earlier today, and is currently +170.

If you think Hill doesn't get finished, she should be able to cover the spread.

Yep I'm making more bets as we go, but I think if Hill loses, it will probably be by submission, and I think its extremely likely, so I'm actually gonna be prolly throw a lil more on Hill and bet Andrade sub

Agreed. War Blaydes. I hedged it w/ Milstead rd 1 which was at +850 which seemed a little wide for a solid HW striker, but Blaydes should be able to grind him down and get a mid/late finish or a decision

Edit: And looks like hitting Blaydes early was smart - he's at almost -400 now which seems wide, Milstead isn't bad

We won't see Milstead until 2018. He most likely something tore in his knee just now.

What's more, he's a part-time fighter, so he won't rush to get back to MMA since he has a full-time job.

Andrade is -700 but yet +150 by sub. Vs Angela Hill, who is a good striker whos kryptonite has always been the ground. And Andrade has a sick guillotine. I feel very good about taking a shot at Hill or Andrade by sub.

If she wins a decision or ko's Hill, it is what it is, getting sick odds.

Need Hamilton to either lose in rd 1 or come through here, if he loses in rd2-decision, bad, any other outcome and we have a great night and get to play for free on the final fights, war Hamilton.

And yes, those ladies were FOTN. And a better FOTN than usual. If that gets topped I'll be happy.

Good job Vick.

The size was too much for Abel, and his TDs weren't good enough.

If it wasn't for that jump knee in R3, it would've been a shitty decision.

I'm done for the night after this fight, the last 2 fights don't help me in any way.

The crazy thing with that Jung finish is it was all timing and anticipation. What a sick shot to land when you haven't fought for year 3 damn years. Glad to have him back.

OSP so jobbed.

UFC really that desperate to have a fighter out of Sweden?

Grosso is one of the only chick fighters that actually looks like a girl. Smooth skin, not shredded like shes snorting Test on the daily.

Disappointed in her corner. I hear it all the time, corner will be trying to pump their fighter up, telling them they have won a round even when they are clearly behind. Several fuck ups by corners this fight night. I couldn't believe they sent that heavy back out on a shredded knee.

... He's an ethnic Turk (I think?) from Switzerland, what is the connection to Sweden exactly?

I'm not that mad about it because I think the better fighter won... kind of?

Hm.. Off-suite socks..

Even with a Swiss army knife on my keychain I got the flags mixed up.

Im from knox, TN so def a homer opinion for OSP, still think he did a lot more damage and deserved the win.

I wonder if they could implement some type of overtime rule to decide split decisions. One of the most appealing aspects of sports is the clearly defined winner and loser and occasionally MMA misses that.
