Welcome back everyone,

I’ve shared my monthly charts on several occasions, and so I chose to include my yearly graph in here as well. As shown, I’ve played 173 days last year, which translates to roughly 800 hours. The goal for this year is 200 days of grind, which will hopefully result in over 1000 hours. I was hoping that maybe I could play even 1200 hours, however this would require from me playing afternoon sessions. In the end I concluded that I want to focus on some other projects this year, e.g. offering more coaching lessons, because I’ve realized that this form of career development can give me lots of enjoyment and a sense of achievement.

January was the month when I’ve finally got back on the right track. I played very decently, tilt happened far less frequently than in previous months (still too often in my opinion) – the poker gods were really gracious to me. I managed to play 90 hours, which is quite a success, considering that poker-wise January began only on the 5th, and half of that time I was fighting with very pesky cold (garlic + lemon + cistus = the omnipresent oging (debilne_ucho®).
The end of the year was not particularly pleasant. The variance definitely wasn’t my ally however the beginning of 2016 proved that the poker gods are looking after me again.

One of my New Year’s resolutions was blogging more actively. In my very first post I’d promised that all kinds of information regarding finances, diet or work ergonomics would have appeared, but each consequent post failed to deliver such info. The goal for this month is at least 1 post per week. My new motto is: ‘shorter, but more frequent’ :D Furthermore I invite everyone to chip in to the discussion and halt my monologue. If you agree with any statements write down why, if you don’t, I’m even more eager to know your argumentation.

Sleep

A topic which I find extremely curious, for three main reasons:
1. It’s interesting…
2. We spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping, so the way we sleep has an enormous impact on the quality of life.
3. I have a pretty serious sleep disorder, which I couldn’t get rid of for years

Probably the majority of you had a problem with falling asleep at some point after a several-hour-long grind. The brain worked at full capacity for hours, and it’s difficult to suddenly switch it to the rest mode. Over the last couple of months my daily functioning has been absolutely pathological. I usually go to sleep around 5 or 6 am, and falling asleep takes me another 2-4 hours. Naturally, my wake-up time has got readjusted as well, and it falls between 2 and 3 pm. I wish to get up before noon, but it’s easier said than done. Even though I could go to sleep at 2 am, it wouldn’t help much as I would still need several hours to fall asleep. So I have a favor to ask you: if you had/have similar issues, please tell me what helps you with falling asleep after a session.
I’m sharing a TED video below, authored by neurobiologist Russell Foster. It’s one of my favorite presentations; it contains tons of interesting info about why we sleep and how important it is for our lives.

There can be only one winner :D

glad things are going well.

what sleeping disorder? generally, for (lazy) poker players...i.e. most of us...its largely just an attitude adjustment and comes down to setting a strict schedule and making yourself get the fk up no matter what (which is something most ppl got into poker to avoid) failing that, can start looking at dietary changes. regular exercise pretty much helps everything across the board too.

I was having trouble falling asleep ever since i was like 15 up until like a year or two ago. You can't fall into sleep after a session, blasting yourself in front of a bright light is one of the worst things you could do before bed time. There was a TED talk about it too. I've found overall that I have to use my physical energy as well as mental, for example playing 10hrs of poker will leave me dry, but when I go to bed i won't fall asleep cause my body will be full of energy even though i feel sleepy. Another thing is I just leave all devices that stream light before bed, usually just read a book as its a good way to optimize time efficiently. Also I've recently started to get a regime which normal people have. Have been going to bed at like 3-4-5am as a default for years, now im going for 12pm/1am and early wake as i feel much more comfortable through the day. It's gonna be a long process to reestablish this habbit, but its the healthier thing in the long run. The only problem is my quantity of hands suffers, as i can't really play efficiently before bed and thats when the most traffic is. One more thing actually, you could try smoking pot before bed. I don't suggest making it as a daily habbit though

What PU said too, however I wouldnt do it myself. The whole idea behind playing poker is that your time is flexible and you could do w/e you want whenever you want to, having a schedule kills that. Unless he meant in terms of waking up/going to bed which I agree with. Tbh I even went from sleeping 9 hrs to sleeping 7 hrs with a "normal" regime

I can relate to the sleep problem.. Spending 6+ hours a day grinding and then trying to sleep is basically impossible. Some nights I don't sleep, and even when I do, I get like 4-5 hours, and that's with waking up every hour or so still. I think the most helpful thing after grinding to try and help you sleep is getting away from a screen, but still some minor mental stimulation. Like read a casual book, or even just sit in the dark and think about casual things. It seems to help me wind down a bit.

I take L-Theanine before bed most nights. It relaxes me and i also get a more potent REM cycle with it making me more likely to have vivid dreams and remember them. You can order it from amazon, just a supplement. Take 200mg and sleep!

flux or gunnar glasses should really help u guys.

Spitfiree   Bulgaria. Feb 13 2016 15:51. Posts 9634

Gunnar just has blue light protection which you can add to any of your glasses, does help your eyes a lot, doubt it has much difference when it comes to light influence on brain
They re just popular cause of gamers and boo-hoo patented technology marketing crap, in the end they re just overpriced and its much better do give a few bucks more and get glasses with decent design by RayBan or something and wont look as a fat donut eating redneck geek

I probably wouldn`t consider myself as being lazy tbh :D I think that for someone who don`t have problems with sleeping it may be hard to understand, but for us who do it`s a real thing. Although more often it seems to me that it`s all about elaborating the right patterns. That has been the way for improving my mental game over the last few years, I`ve made an enormous progress with that approach.

That`s the story of my life;] I`ve noticed that it`s the hardest for me to shutdown, after a long session that went very well. I`m full of energy, my brain is working like mad, I`ve got a lot of new ideas about basically everything. Few Years back, it was a debate about Leatherass`s case, You can read about it right here link Referring to TED, I completely forgot about it, Russell Foster talked about it in his presentation. It has been proven, that the stream of light, blocks the emission of the sleep hormone Melatonin. I don`t won`t to relly on Pot nor any medications, although I started to drink melisa before going to bed.

I don`t know the product (gunnar glasses), and don`t want to make any judgements, but I suppose it may be a strong placebo effect. Although I use anti-glare glasses, and it makes a tremendous difference, I`ve tested it over the ears, and I`m not going back to play without it.

I`ve been sleeping like a baby for the last few days. I was going to bed at 4-5 am, and it took me 1 hour at most to fall asleep. Maybe it`s just a variance, but the time will show. I do 30-40 min workout after I`m done playing, and read a book just before going to bed. Especially reading seems to have a great impact, because it helps to distract my mind from poker, by focusing on other topic and one activity at the time.

Adding any kind of physical sport into your routine and keeping the book reading pre-bed will have huge impact. Tbh it does sound like something super standard and easy to do, however making those into a long term habit does require a bunch of discipline and self motivation from time to time, at least I can relate to both.

Absolutely agree on medical substances, however I wouldn't put pot in that graph, I've just observed it helped me sleep on the rare occasions I've smoked past years
Dusty's post kind of makes me feel bad for the guy, but a part from that its just a bunch of information which you cant take into consideration due to lack of sample and the fact that the guy suffered a stroke in his 20s so his health is far from the average player, or the hs ones

I buy the melatonin gummies at walmart. They work really well too. Pop one and I'm out very quickly.

Definitely it isn't easy, but it's not different from other areas of life it requires persistence. I've bought some equipment, and I'm gonna work out at night after poker session is over. Reffering to Dusty, its definitely sad, it seems guy has gotten lost somewhere along the way. Rellying on drugs and booze with mental problems isn't the best idea.

I've used melatonin and a few other similar type things to help me with my sleep. The only thing that really seems to work for me is regular good exercise.
