Hey ya'll, Im Nammai a player almost completely new to poker. When I was a student, I used to shack up with a poker player (staked 2/4NL i think) who taught me some and have watched poker streams and the infamous "high stakes poker" on occasion. I only started playing yesterday and wish to get some feedback on my experiences so far.

I read Meat's beginner guide before i started playing $0.01/0.02 yesterday. On the first day I starte following it pretty stricktly, then eased up a lot (that means more loose than a worn out prostitute) and learned the hard way what it's like to get caught out with semi good hand. (for instance OOP flop paired a A with a bad kicker). I now play more tight, however not as much as the guide suggest. I have some questions regarding this matter. This is how I've been playing so far.

1. I raise any hand 3bb with pairs, sJ/Q, off A/Q (some times K/Q) or higher. No matter what. I base this on that virtually no one will call any higher raise, regardless of position, unless they themselves have T/T or higher. Even with this small raise it feels like I it's too seldom I get any action regardless of position (more when Im OOP tho). The 3bb also comes from the experience of gettin "something" to the pot, I've tried less and ended up with a lot of ~0.20 pots for my high pairs and higher bets are always folded to. From my experiences so far the low pair > set on flop has been profitable. Most players continue betting with highest board pair/over pair and will almost always call when put to an all-in/semi position. That was a great tip.

2. In position (button + button previous turn) I also play suited connectors, T/J or higher (depending on what players are in the mix). This is based on my experience that a lot of players are dying to see the flop, but are very easily turned off when they dont get anything. I'm actually bluffing with just under pot raises when there's two or less and get them most of the time.

The reasoning is also that I play this way is that just trying to nib blinds/pre-flop or just after flop get's you nowhere. If you play tightly for an hour, you make like ~$0.20 by doing so. The big wins comes from getting some one interested in an $1 flop and cashing out (I mean, it's 50bb's...). I'm even playing three tables and have a hard time getting action with my 3bb raises.

So my questions thus far are:

1. How often should I switch tables? When I have a stack of $4+ I get action on my 3bb raises less than 15% of the time. People seem very afraid to play against such stacks, even though the table itself is pretty action packed.

2. When action is low, how bad it limping? I've been doing it erraticly when I've been on the table for a while just to get some thing going. The guy I shacked up with gave me the impression it's like showing up to a KKK rally in a Boy George costume (to borrow from B. Hicks).

3. I've been doing three tables most of the time, just to get more entertainment - but reads on oponents and even considering flop texture does suffer. Im guessing I should stick with 2?

4. Are there any free stat trackers what work on old macbooks (the reason I'm even trying it bc my stationary is fucked atm - but I'm starting to enjoy this game).

5. Next level is ofc 0.02/0.05 with $5, seeing how I play rather loosely (to get experience) and it's gonna be at the first step over wood league (to borrow from SC), I'm thinking at least 80 buy ins.

6. Almost forgot to add. I bet _very often_ in general, especially on tiny pots. Mostly to get some value for my top pair or take down checked down tiny pots. (And which in my mind would invite more players to play against me.)

7. I also have some questions regarding hand stats preflop. What's the pre-flop value of an underpair (>T) to say A/J or higher both suited and not. I feel like one could get into a lot of all ins pre-fop with such hands, cuz people overvalue high cards. It's like 55% right? I dont have the bankroll to play that way though, and getting a higher pair is so punishing.

I'll post my hand statistics a the bottom to give you an impression, however with these stakes the stats are pretty skewed. For instance I think I've been able to check down my BB untill river about 10 times today alone. (also limped a bit like it said). Today I've lost i think around 25% show downs of big pots ($1+), and then it's more or less only top paired board with worse kicker with. (I have ofc lost other pots, but I was favored before the money went in so I still consider it good play). All in all i started the day with ~$14.50 and my roll is now ~24.50 with what feels like OK runs, so i guess im doing something right.

I also have a question about a particular hand that stuck in my head, both because I hoped to get something out of it, and because I probably played it as badly as any one could:

Second to speak after fold, I had T/T. I raised my usual 3bb (0.06.) Next floded and then got raised to .022 by 2nd to button. Button also joined the party so I was hoping for the set to my tens on the flop. Flop was QQ6 off suit. I checked, original raiser put another .040 into the pot with the button joining. I actually called (which was horrible) and saw 2 off suit. Fearing the second raiser I checked again, he raised ~1.20 or something, and we both folded to it. I'm guessing to get out after the flop would be the correct play? (Added: had no particular reads except that raiser played only real cards).

Any feedback appreciated.

Peace out,

Nammaï

Welcome to liquid poker and good luck. I think the best way to see if you are making any critical errors is to post some hand histories using the site hand converter. You can either post the hand through the converter for all to see or start a thread in the low stakes poker section. It is difficult sometimes to find leaks strictly from those statistics.

Sure thing. I just hammered this down because Im new and not really sure what Im looking for to improve. Can you recommonend any hand trackers (that works with Macs - my desk top wont be up for a month or so) so I can get some more reliable data to post here?

where do u play?

holdemmanager.com = the best most prefer

pokertracker.com = #2

if ur on bovada theres a special hud there.

answers to questions :

1. How often should I switch tables? When I have a stack of $4+ I get action on my 3bb raises less than 15% of the time. People seem very afraid to play against such stacks, even though the table itself is pretty action packed.

Switch tables when theres no more fish on the tables. If there is a fish or players playing very sub-optimal, than stay at the table.

2. When action is low, how bad it limping? I've been doing it erraticly when I've been on the table for a while just to get some thing going. The guy I shacked up with gave me the impression it's like showing up to a KKK rally in a Boy George costume (to borrow from B. Hicks).

Limping has almost no merit in cashgames, theres a few spots like sooted kings in a 9max game on the button vs 5 limpers and 22-55, but don't have it in your game more than a very small %.

3. I've been doing three tables most of the time, just to get more entertainment - but reads on oponents and even considering flop texture does suffer. Im guessing I should stick with 2?

play as many as ur comfortable with and play on the top of the deck and don't spew. if you are giving away money drop tables. if tables fill with regs join new tables.

4. Are there any free stat trackers what work on old macbooks (the reason I'm even trying it bc my stationary is fucked atm - but I'm starting to enjoy this game).

who uses a mac besides u! idk i think u can probably use holdem manager 30 days free or pokertracker 30 days free just go to the sites n look

5. Next level is ofc 0.02/0.05 with $5, seeing how I play rather loosely (to get experience) and it's gonna be at the first step over wood league (to borrow from SC), I'm thinking at least 80 buy ins.

theres 2 approaches. micros are easy so u can move up every 10-20 buy-ins, but at higher limits u want to always have 50+++ buy ins minimum. so its smart to just instill good bankroll management from day 1, and always have 50-100 buy-ins minimum. Don't take shots unless its live vs fish, slow and steady wins this race.

6. Almost forgot to add. I bet _very often_ in general, especially on tiny pots. Mostly to get some value for my top pair or take down checked down tiny pots. (And which in my mind would invite more players to play against me.)

its smart to be betting often, most smart players do, i do, but everything is player dependent, position dependent, etc. some players will just call reraise and jam on u if u are spewy with ur bets, so make sure ur range coordinates with the board before you bet at it. a nl2 fish may fold to the bets, but ppl won't even fold A hi at higher stakes if ur line doesn't make good sense.

I don't understand what you are trying to say here. AA vs KK is 80/20 same AA vs 22. AK vs QQ vs 45/55 roughly. You never have to play high variance poker, its better sometimes to play high variance, and better other times to play lower variance. If my opponent will be rejamming really wide, i may play high variance to induce him to throw $ at me. if my opponents are all nits i may play higher variance since they will fold often. otherwise stick with a lower variance approach. in mtts use ur chips as weapons. in cashgames u can always find a great spot. if nl2 players are betting at you,i would imagne they would have to have the hand the majority of hte time. tip - lowstakes players bluff with allin often.

learn and master each limit, enjoy your progress, and you may do well, at least you have some logical answers.

Lulz...

Anyway, I started with Lemon36's beginners guide on pokerstrategy and it's a lot more detailed than the previous one. First order of business for me is to internalize those charts/ranges so it's automatic and getting more experience at the stakes post-flop. I dont really feel like this thread is gonna help me that much before I've actually learned the basics+ of that stuff. Thanks anyway tho.

ryan, I started using the calculator more to see the % of hitting for instance gutshot straights and stuff post-flop so don't worry about that part. And for reference i just started on Partypoker on whim (guy i used to shack up with played there, but that was like 5 years ago. I get the feeling they're not high in standing any more).

Peace
