can I go to the court and file a petition for a writ of mandamus myself or am I required to hire a lawyer to do it for me?

i dont think you ever really need a lawyer for anything in us law if you are comfortable representing yourself...comfortable being the key word there.

representing yourself in a civil case in the us is fairly common afaik

yeah you don't technically need a lawyer for anything. i'm visiting a family member who's a retired judge of 20 years and saw this thread so asked his opinion on it, and he said doing this without legal help would be stupid fwiw.

yeah, i should've said "anything where you're only representing yourself" (i.e. not a class of individuals as in a class action lawsuit).

obv don't take this for legal advice but i believe that's correct.

If it's important, you should probably hire an attorney.*

*not legal advice

Thanks for the replies guys. Probably not worth a lawyer or pursuing at all but I wanted to know my options.

Plenty of cases in the Netherlands where a lawyer is required, for example in civil lawsuits for over 25.000 euro or when you file for a preliminary injunction.
