I think caffeine consumption will follow similar route to cigarette consumption. It's a highly addictive substance with many negative side effects but is treated as innocuous by society. Obviously it does not have devastating effects on physical health like tobacco does, I still believe that there will be a backlash against it as our society becomes even more health conscious.

not having the 'devastating effects on physical health that tobacco does' is enough for me to be okay with it as i love the positive effects of coffee not to mention the flavor

the key to everything is moderation.

the reason you have a problem with caffeine is because you abused it, and it fucked up you dopamine receptors. Practice self-control, now its obviously a problem for you.

I recently cut down on smoking M, I took 3 weeks off completely and stopped having the urge to do it regularly, now I just smoke occasionally after I am done with all my responsibilities.

Can you link or suggest any credible sources that demonstrate caffeine's negative side effects?

Also what is your own experience with the negative side effects? How many mg of caffeine were you up to per day?

The main issues I've had with caffeine consumption is its effects on my sleep and mental state. I notice now that it's much easier to go to sleep reasonable time. I am also much less anxious/stressed out that I was while on it. Although I have no proof I also suspect that it is a contributing factor to the pain I experience using a mouse and keyboard because it caused my muscles to tense and encouraged me to work/play computer games without taking breaks. I would say my level of consumption was around 400 to 500 mg a day.

I totally agree that caffeine does not come close to tobacco in terms of negative side effects and I come off as sort of a radical Alcoholics Anonymous adherent. What I meant to convey is that often people don't even consider caffeine to be drug treating it as if it had no negative side effects when it clearly possesses some. I also agree that in the case of caffeine the positive effects can outweigh the negative ones for some people, but I don't think I'm one of those people because as casino correctly inferred I struggle with self-control.

I really like the concept, that whatever we try to quit and stuff will exert some amount of willpower, it's just not one thing, it seeps into all areas. So if you quit something, what quickly happens is that they will indulge in something else. Then go tell their friends they quit smoking, but not mentioning that they started chugging 3-4 red bulls a day now.

So a good idea can maybe be to find another for of emotional pleasure kinda of thing, some other addiction in it's place that's better for you (not sure what that might be, different things for different people I guess).

I know very fat people have great success stopping eating super bad foods, when they find a few dishes they think tastes equally delicious, but is much healthier.

I have an irl mate who's been alcoholic for years, i got him to stop the hard liquor, for some wine and beer, and now he functions very well!! (We tried to get him to stop it all, but was a bit to much, but got him to reduce the alcohol by 85% and start working out a little, good enough, let people do what they want lol).

I won't recommend or not, because I know people react differently. But if you look here Rinny Pinny, it's nootropics forum on reddit!!

http://www.reddit.com/r/nootropics/wiki/faq

And if you scroll down just a little bit, on the left side, it says there's a lot of people who love mixing in L-Theanine with caffeine, since it makes it so that you don't get the jitters and anxiety, some calming leave shit or something!!

Might be worth checking out, i see there's a lot of links to reference and research done on it, not sure, but looks kinda legit!!

I've been taking CDP-Choline and Aniracetam and its not really that effective for fighting addiction, it actually made the withdrawal worse.

but it depends on what you take, aniracetam is super efficient for musicians/artists, the music sounded so good it was distracting me from grinding

CDP-Choline increases the effectiveness of dopamine receptors(effectively increasing the effects of anything you take), so if you stack a good mix you can find an alternative for caffeine. its very likely that I found a poor combination for grinding.. I might buy something more specific because CDP-Choline is pretty solid.

The one positive thing is that its not very addicting, nothing like adderall, but that could be possible because I did not like taking aniracetam... (maybe at the club)

@smuft
thanks for the link i listened to the whole thing. It was helpful to hear about the dangers of getting into that binary addiction mindset where its everything or nothing. I've had periods where i was living like an extreme religious ascetic and it was good while it lasted but it wasn't sustainable and I always quickly revert to my old habits. slow gradual progress ftw i guess..

@Marius
yeah ive definitly justified eating shitty + internet binging with "oh yeah im quitting caffeine i deserve it" but yeah im really just setting myself up for failure.

I'm not going to fuck with nootropics @ all. I think I subjected my neurology to lot's of foreign stuff and haven't really been able to deal with it very well (depressive periods + addiction stuff).

I think most studies show a benefit of caffeine over the long term. Too much is detrimental, and as always, people respond to drugs differently.

Yet I think there is a big difference between the vehicles of caffeine, like coffee/tea or soda/energy drinks. Coffee is obviously more healthy due to the high levels polyphenols and its trace minerals.

Decent article on the benefits of coffee with some citations.

I've just cut it completely, and get a real boost when need it.

Don't think high consumption is compatible with poker tho, we get enough anxiety

93% Sure!
