I was a shitty poker player back in 2010 or so who was barely able to beat 50nl. I quit playing poker because I was shit at it. Fortunately I've been successful elsewhere and have found myself with a good income living in New Mexico, a land filled with Indian casinos. My understanding is that online games have gotten impossibly more difficult but if live games haven't gotten more difficult I'd be interested in attempting live poker. I'm horribly rusty, was never especially good and the game has gotten way harder since I quit. I am, however, sufficiently bankrolled and this is live poker. I'm considering spending a few evenings getting my feet wet.
Good idea or bad idea? |

Live players are bad but your hand sample is going to be so slow if you're accustomed to online play. |

Probably need more information to give a good answer. You said your reason for quitting before was because you were shit?
That would lead me to say if your only motivation to do this is for money then I'd just do something else. If there are other motivations like; the challenge, social aspect, fun then this might be more rewarding.
Also your relative income matters here you said you make a "good living" if that means a >100k / year job then the extra potential earn from poker probably won't be very relevant, especially if the variance will effect your day to day happiness / productivity in other parts of your life.
For some loose reference guide (live grinders pls correct me if im way off):
(assuming deep stacks, reasonable rake and questionable players)
The better live regs in the game make:
2/5 live ~35 / hour
5/10 live ~70 / hour

Looks right, I can take the local 3/5 game for more than 35/hr though on weekends/evenings, especially in the first must move game when u start with all the fish and the nit regs already been filtered into the main game. |

Where I play 5/10 has significantly better players than 3/5 (there being multiple 5/10 tables and that usually being the highest stake besides 10/20 on weekends) so while the game is twice as big and rake is slightly less of a actor I still don't think winrates there are double 3/5
The 3/5 gets someone walking up to punt off a couple hundred bucks every few mins |

^ California and Vegas. Probably southern California but I haven't played much Northern Cali games.
2/5 $40-50 an hour and 5/10 $80-100 an hour are pretty attainable. Live games are ridiculously soft. Especially on the weekends. |

I've played a ton in Socal and its pretty awful for 2/5 - 5/10... its not the worst but its pretty bad.. they rake $4 on every hand even if their is no flop. |

Take $100 and put it on ACR or Bovada and try to run it up... much more fun imo. Live games are insanely boring imo and if your pretty rusty at least it'll be cheaper to relearn the game... I'm glad to see your doing good Kwark been a long time since I saw your name haha gl in whatever you decide to do! |

For example "Poker Bergen" or "Poker Oslo" in Norway are awesome if you are in Norway :D EVERY day someone arranges something, and totally rakefree. And the competition will make 0.01 / 0.02 online look like a hard game to beat. This is not normal in your country ?
By the way, we had 1 online guy playing the game for a short while. But he refused to play the tournaments (because he disagreed about the format lol) and he sat out if we played NL Omaha in cashgame... And while playing some GTO preflop range in NL holdem.... just generally he was beeing unlikable. Eventually people didnt want him in the game anymore. Dont be like him please
Just play whatever the fish wants to play and how they want to play it - even if the blind structure is a bit quick in tournaments you still end up in top 3 way too often somehow anyway if you are good. NL holdem, Pineapple, NL omaha, NL 5-card omaha and NL holdem tournaments is played where I live. Its "dealer choice" for cashgame and i always pick Omaha. I sometimes mention fixed limit holdem or stud and they all laugh and think i made a joke if i mention any of those limit games :D |
