some parts look promising (of course better than JJ Star Trek) but it's just a collection of cliche shots and throwbacks really. The thing is, the original trilogy was also quite cliche but in a classic/homage sort of way

For instance the "take my hand" shot with the girl and black stormtrooper, the obnoxious zoom-in on the TIE fighter shooting at the Millennium Falcon in the wreckage in the sand (I can't explain exactly but this kind of shaky zoom-in was in the prequels also and I think it's generic action movie trash), the fact that Luke still has Vader's burned helmet is a big WTF, the legion of stormtroopers turning around together, the girl and black stormtrooper running away from an exploding green screen, and even Han Solo at the end to me makes Harrison Ford just look senile, it's like a caricature - what is chewbacca doing with his crossbow out

some stuff wasn't obnoxious though, including the opening shot of Tatooine with the crashed star destroyer, Luke's robotic hand, chrome trooper walking, the shot of the super star destroyer, the general fact that we're not in prequel land. looking back, the prequels seem like what you would "expect" disney to do if they owned star wars. Basically, this film seems like it should be tolerable at least, which is an improvement for Mr. Abrams

but I'm not expecting great things, it will probably suffer from the same problem Star Trek 11 and 12 had which is that their villains have no depth whatsoever - Nero was just an angry guy from the future with a huge ship, and Khan was just like a shallow bad guy which sucks because they painted over the original Khan who was awesome. Another problem could be too many characters - in Star Trek it's just Spock Prime, but here we've got a bunch of the original cast, entirely new villains I guess, as well as people who I assume are going to be the new leads. and that could get crowded and with the speed of an action movie will make the characters even more shallow

However, one thing that's not a problem is having to bluntly introduce everybody and force them together unnaturally, which Star Trek 11, and was annoying. because we already know who everybody is - although I expect there will be a little bit of this when it comes to what I assume will be Han and Leia's offspring

I was confused by the black storm trooper. storm troopers are supposed to be clones. Only explanation is he was randomly in a storm trooper suit.

clones werent even in the IV, V, VI episode since they age quickly and die shortly after revenge of the sith. Those storm troopers were regular ppl.
Now this is VII which is 30 years after return of the jedi, so yea, they arent clones

I finished reading the Thrawn Trilogy books a few months back and kinda wish movies 7,8,9 would be based on that storyline...

I read over 50 of the star wars novels as a kid, basically all of them up until around when the vuzzhan vong came into the picture. I have the first thrawn novel in original hardcover. I'd have to say the thrawn trilogy is by far the best of any of the star wars writing. Those novels literally got me into reading when I was in 6th grade.

The thing with making the new movies about the thrawn books would be that then they would be tied to the rest of the cannon in the future. The thrawn story is great; better than the original by far actually but I think they just wanted to do something new. Talk about shitty villains, thrawn was the opposite. Anyways They are taking stars wars in an entirely new direction away from everything in the previously official timeline. Because while the Thrawn books were great along with some of the other stories as the timeline progressed shit started to get pretty dumb. They obviously may not have agreed with some of the deaths of main characters over at Disney as well. If movies 789 were about thrawn then maybe 10,11,12 would have to be about the Vong and that would be all bad.

I understand that in the new movies it is 30 years down the line and basically all of the jedi are gone with possibly only a superpowerful luke remaining? maybe thats just rumor but if so that is kind of dumb. One of my favorite things about Star Wars was the Jedi and the progression of their powers and that was a big deal in the books. There was a Jedi Academy and some pretty powerful Jedi came around like kyp durron and did some cool shit. Along with a lot of backstory about how powerful Yoda actually was and the crazy shit he did before his retirement in the original movies. All that stuff was kind of cool so thats wiped out now along with all the dumb stuff. Probably for the best ultimately just impossible to trust it to disney. We will see.

My bad, I mis-understood your post. I thought you meant that clones never were storm troopers.

I never thought star wars was a great movie, except for the empire strikes back, but i really love the series. It's great entertainment always, but not great movies imo.
