Hey, Target: Why is Annie a white girl?

Some of the ads show a white girl wearing a $29.99 red dress available in Target's "Annie for Target" collection. In the "Annie" remake currently in theaters, Annie is played by Quvenzhané Wallis, who is black. The Change.org petitioners are asking Target (TGT) to remove the ads and apologize to Wallis.

Dude, there's nothing wrong with having a white girl in 100% of the ads for a clothing line inspired by a movie with a black main character. To think that there is is complete PC & racist paranoia. It's an unhealthy mindset and by nit picking at stuff like this that mostly satisfies the PC/multicultural agendas anyway you just ignite more race-related crap over basically nothing. That woman deserves nothing and shouldn't expect anything from Target.

If the entire range had only black girls in the ads, would a petition from a white or mixed race family be reasonable? I mean, what we want is an exact even distribution of race in ads otherwise it's racist or not "multicultural" enough, right? It has nothing at all to do with the black mother feeling her own race lost some power here. Note that the child that sparked all this was also mixed race.

That is different because you are talking about exclusion. Just because Target may be targeting whites in this case (They aren't - its Target. A cheap, large, American Chain SuperStore. Their target demographic includes all minorities) because they think they will buy and like the clothing the most and maybe have the most money to spend does not mean others are not welcome to buy the clothing as well. Of course they are; everyone can buy.

A lot of times things are intentionally marketed to one small subsect of the population in order to make them seem upscale or exclusive which then in turn makes them desirable to everyone else. i.e. luxury goods. Nothing necessarily racist about that. Racism is a strong word and implies hate. Maybe you guys should be saying light discrimination (which in my view is not always horrible because there are some small differences between the different races and the cultures that make up those races despite the fact that we are all humans. People don't like to acknowledge this obviously but I find it true nevertheless).

Look at Abercrombie and Fitch. Look at who they hire, how they advertise, etc. It is clear their target demographic is young white men and women. Funny thing is when I worked there most of our customers by far were Asian. Not like we had a problem with this. Its marketing psychology and economics not hate or elitism (ok with AF maybe a little elitism but more about being attractive as opposed to being white. A lot of our models and even in store employees were of non-white ancestry).

I mean if Abercrombie like Target here is racist are they Ageist as well? By your logic they would have to be because they are not using the elderly in their ads or making clothes for them. Same as they have a target race demographic they have a target age demographic. Age and race protections are the same under the law.

Annie is some fictional iconic American girl known for her red pigtails, like Little Red Riding Hood or Pippi Longstockings or something. They made a movie about her, or remade a movie about her where Annie is played by a black girl.
