yeah, one of the methods of pacifying and controlling a population is to teach people of great leaders in the past that changed history. Like martin luther king for example. When in reality it has always been mass popular movements that made the world a better place. people like Gandhi or MLK just played big roles in it.

Any good history class should be teaching kids how strong ordinary people are, and how they overcame tyrants, not just teach them about the leaders of mass popular movements.

Higher cultural values should be observed and defended, strong and diverse individuals are humanity's best hope for the future. Our world cultivates uniformity and essentially undermines such people. Laying the hopes for humanity in the equalizing hands of the mass and it's blind reactionary forces is disastrous and short sighted. A society where an uneducated mass would be able to eg make instant political decisions through voting via smartphone would be nightmarish. Humanity's advancement will not be found in the absolute equality that being part of the mass demands,it will be found in those few that run ahead and slowly drag everyone else along with them. Idk what sort of history lessons you have been watching Stroggos but I am curious to historical examples that suggest the opposite.

Yes great people are just people who made choices and promises to themselves and kept them. You and I are indeed not unique snowflakes; Shakespeare Goethe Beethoven and a million others are human sacred monsters and actually amazing. If you were to actually do something amazing that reaches the maximum of your potential you'd first have to realize how big what these people have done is, how insignificant you are in front of it.Then, you could try to do something of equal greatness and you'd most likely fail, but it would be a start (at becoming better)

It made me chuckle a bit that the guy name drops Johny Rotten as a great person that turned out great despite what the bad people in school told him. I guess if he is then the same could be said about Justin Bieber.
The problem with schools is that they mostly teach how to be the same with everyone else, not that they praise actually great and influential people and compare them to the students' lack of achievements. They are cutting their wings by making them boring and uninspired and with no desire for greatness

well, by mass movements i mean 1%+ of the population, many revolutions only require 10% or so of the population. My examples are the civil rights movement in America and the non violent resistance in India that led to its independence from British imperialists. Arab spring had some success and occupy was successful as well imo, to some extent it empowered people and made others realize what was going on in the world. it is a spark that will ignite bigger, future protests. Sure some of these movements had their leaders, but the they all required large amounts of people to participate.

Yeah leaders had nothing to do with it. I'm sure without Jefferson, Lincoln, Churchill, Eddison, Tesla, J.P Morgan or Bill Gates the world would be exactly the same.

the spiritual leaders behind these movements are what kept the mass going the way I see it. Usually the majority of people have no problem following others around or just simply obeying orders if they feel the person on top has some sort of divinity or heroic status. Even the mass of anarchists in the Spanish civil war essentially followed CNT leaders around and idolized local political heroes like Durruti
Not saying Martin Luther King or Gandhi didn't express a lot of concerns of the people in the movements, my point is that the mass alone without a face to put on it's demands (which in reality is the sum of the most powerful tendencies within different people) will always lead nowhere.
I do realize that it's tough to actually define what constitutes greatness and the discussion would get huge and perhaps tiring. Greatness should involve pushing the boundaries of the human comfort zone in any aspect though imo
We won't get that if we think along the lines of "nobody is great by himself, only if we do things together we can achieve huge goals". This could very well be the biggest threat modern democracies pose to the future of humanity

I'm sure someone on this thread was saying leaders had NOTHING to do with ANYTHING
I'm sure Jefferson, Lincoln, Churchill, Edison, J.P. Morgan and Bill Gates would have all achieved something wonderful without society

the world will always have leaders and followers...as long as general relativity holds true.

The trouble isn't that there needs to be no leaders, or needs to be leaders. The trouble is that we value leaders higher than we value followers. Leaders and followers are simply roles that both must exist, and there needs to be a proper ratio for both, and there is no other way.

The trouble is that our society values leaders over followers.
