Top-secret Prism program claims direct access to servers of firms including Google, Apple, Facebook. Microsoft, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube.
Basically secret government agencies are monitoring and recording everyone on the planet.
They read all your emails, google searches. Here's them drinking your privacy away.
If they wish - they can know almost everything about you.
They have denied doing this.
So Edward Snowden leaked this info to the public. A 29-year-old former technical assistant for the CIA and current employee of the defence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton. Snowden has been working at the National Security Agency for the last four years as an employee of various outside contractors, including Booz Allen and Dell.
The Boundless Informant (program used to collect all this data) documents show the agency collecting almost 3 billion pieces of intelligence from US computer networks over a 30-day period ending in March 2013. One document says it is designed to give NSA officials answers to questions like, "What type of coverage do we have on country X" in "near real-time by asking the SIGINT [signals intelligence] infrastructure."
The NSA access is part of a previously undisclosed program called Prism, which allows officials to collect material including search history, the content of emails, file transfers and live chats, the document says.
The Guardian has verified the authenticity of the document, a 41-slide PowerPoint presentation – classified as top secret with no distribution to foreign allies – which was apparently used to train intelligence operatives on the capabilities of the program. The document claims "collection directly from the servers" of major US service providers.
Companies are legally obliged to comply with requests for users' communications under US law, but the Prism program allows the intelligence services direct access to the companies' servers. The NSA document notes the operations have "assistance of communications providers in the US".
Now the guy who leaked this info is gone to Hongkong where he hopes he will not be reached as easily as on home soil.
He has had "a very comfortable life" that included a salary of roughly $200,000, a girlfriend with whom he shared a home in Hawaii, a stable career, and a family he loves. "I'm willing to sacrifice all of that because I can't in good conscience allow the US government to destroy privacy, internet freedom and basic liberties for people around the world with this massive surveillance machine they're secretly building."
On May 20, he boarded a flight to Hong Kong, where he has remained ever since. He chose the city because "they have a spirited commitment to free speech and the right of political dissent", and because he believed that it was one of the few places in the world that both could and would resist the dictates of the US government.
Just before sovereignty over Hong Kong passed from Britain to China in 1997, the US signed a new extradition treaty with the semi-autonomous territory. Under that treaty, both parties agree to hand over fugitives from each other's criminal justice systems, but either side has the right of refusal in the case of political offences.
Beijing, which gave its consent for Hong Kong to sign the agreement, also has a right of veto if it believes the surrender of a fugitive would harm the "defence, foreign affairs or essential public interest or policy'' of the People's Republic of China. In short, the treaty makes Snowden's fate a matter of political expediency not just in Hong Kong but in Beijing.
So wow. Let's see how his plays out and whether Snowden will dissapear/go to Guantanamo/die from heart attack/live happily ever after.
Poll: What will happen to Edward Snowden?
(Vote): Dissapear from the planet
(Vote): Welcome to Guantanamo!
(Vote): Sudden Heart attack/other medical death
(Vote): Suicide from overmedaction
(Vote): Prison in US

Anyone with a career in IT knew that this had to be taking place on some level, but most of us assumed it stopped at the ISP. ISP's naturally would want to protect their own interests and datamine whatever passed through their network in the event they needed it to defend against a lawsuit or something. Afterall you dont want to be the ISP who says "dang we had no idea 9/11 was planned via our news groups". The speculation came from whether or not the gov't would join in, and if they could. I mean we're talking ridiculous sums of data here, but they found a way. I dont really know how I feel about this. I mean imagine if Google Street view was ran by the gov't instead of Google. A lot of people have complained because they got caught naked in the drive way at 6am, and some have even sued because of it. But the vast majority of us dont care if we are caught on camera without our permission. Does the same hold true of email/chat/web history?
Personally, I dont think the current implementation of this is whats threatening, but rather what some twisted future gov't might do. There have been enough senators in recent history who have proposed jail time for bloggers and even forum posts that criticized them, and all sorts of other abuses that they personally felt justified in executing. These are the people I'm afraid of rising to power one day, and having this vast treasure trove of information. There's probably at least 1 religious fanatic on your neighborhood street who would kill you based upon your personal lifestyle, but they keep it to themselves because they know it's not legal or worth the hassle to make legal. But should the USA fall back into some anti-intellectual dark ages I fear the worst for us all. Imagine of Sarah Palin became president with access to this kind of information.

I think the worst part isnt simply how misguided this has been, since I can understand the avg white haired senator seeing nothing wrong with this, but the fact that this information doesnt appear to have been used for anything. The whole idea is to prevent terrorism right? So, has anything been prevented as a result of this? In the last 5 years I think I can recall a handful of "terrorist plot foiled" cases, but hardly any information was ever supplied to even legitimize the claims.

In Canada, Quebec almost separated 15 years ago. There was a inter-province vote and it barley passed (was ~ 50.5/49.5) all due to the fact that they speak french. - pretty crazy shit considering it would also cause the country to be split apart geographically Quebec Referendum

Ironically, people who flip the fuck-out at Obama when you are talking about gun control or Obama care keep saying: "This is all just an excuse for Gov to monitor your moves and make a database of you and what you do etc etc"
Then when the Obama government get caught ACTUALLY doing all that stuff, it is THE ONLY time they support Obama.
Jeez I wonder why? BoozAllenHamilton (where Snowden worked) annual revenue is about $6 Bil/year and 99% of that comes from Gov contracts. I wonder if maybe that is why all the politicians support these kind of activity.
In US everyone is happy as long as all the prices are rising. Unless its crude oil - Marc Faber

I think the politicians support it because they're all 60 years old and dont understand the internet. If you were to frame this as the gov't opening and xerox'ing every piece of letter mail that goes through the post office, then they'd probably freak out.
Also when it comes to storing forum posts, emails, chat history, web history, etc, you gotta remember this information is unique from one provider to another. It's not like every bit of data transmitted from your computer is all readily observable in some unified format. Imagine deleting all the extensions to all the known file types on your computer, and then trying to double click any random file and open it. You wouldnt know what to open it with. You might end up opening a jpeg with notepad, and just end up getting garbage. There could still be decipherable material in there, but it would be messy to look at. The BBC code this forum uses might be completely different from what 2p2 uses, and someone would have to know that before attempting to analyze it. I know a lot of what they're looking at probably is stored in pure plain text, and it shouldnt be too hard to run basic keyword searches on it regardless of format, but I doubt the NSA had every major software provider develop a format for export so they could filter through all this data in a useful way. Also I imagine at any given moment there are a few petabytes of information in transit around the globe, there is no practical way to flat out store this 24/7. It will be interesting to learn exactly how the gov't is storing this data, how much they are physically capable of storing, and what tools they are using to make sense of it all, and how much sense can even be made.

Glenn Greenwald follow up: When you say "someone at NSA still has the content of your communications" - what do you mean? Do you mean they have a record of it, or the actual content?
Both. If I target for example an email address, for example under FAA 702, and that email address sent something to you, Joe America, the analyst gets it. All of it. IPs, raw data, content, headers, attachments, everything. And it gets saved for a very long time - and can be extended further with waivers rather than warrants.

Ed Snowden, I thank you for your brave service to our country.
Some skepticism exists about certain of your claims, including this:
I, sitting at my desk, certainly had the authorities to wiretap anyone, from you, or your accountant, to a federal judge, to even the President if I had a personal email.
Do you stand by that, and if so, could you elaborate?
Answer:
Yes, I stand by it. US Persons do enjoy limited policy protections (and again, it's important to understand that policy protection is no protection - policy is a one-way ratchet that only loosens) and one very weak technical protection - a near-the-front-end filter at our ingestion points. The filter is constantly out of date, is set at what is euphemistically referred to as the "widest allowable aperture," and can be stripped out at any time. Even with the filter, US comms get ingested, and even more so as soon as they leave the border. Your protected communications shouldn't stop being protected communications just because of the IP they're tagged with.
More fundamentally, the "US Persons" protection in general is a distraction from the power and danger of this system. Suspicionless surveillance does not become okay simply because it's only victimizing 95% of the world instead of 100%. Our founders did not write that "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all US Persons are created equal."
