I flicked through the news channels today and saw 42 killed with 257 wounded in Iraq. Made me think about the value of an american vs the value of an iraq citizen.

I dont think Al Qaeda would waste their time on such low yield explosives. If they're going to blow shit up, they're going to do it right. Probably just some fucktard American. |

Yes, that kind of goes without saying and i get where you are going with that. With a population over 300 million surely there are more important developments worthy of making the news. To a bystander this seems to be blown out of proportion. Just my 2 cents. |

Was thinking the same. I have them in some parlays, and I hate when teams/fighters get canceled from parlays cuz they don't let you get your money back and re-make the parlay into something else.
Sucks the most when it's a 2 team parlay. Cuz if I wanted to bet 1 team, it'd be much bigger than what I risked on the two teams.
Edit: Yeah, it is canceled. NHL.com said the Senators/Bruins game will be played at a later date.

We got atleast two dead people and many with life long injuries etc. The world is about to go to war.
How da fuck can you possibly rant about your bet on a PUBLIC forum?
Then people wonder why everyone hates Americans. The sense of entitlement is just beyond belief. |
LOL then you better stop killing children in iraq

yeah it's interesting, although there are far less bombings in the west than in iraq, so it's not really a suprise to see iraqis getting killed. i'm not sure if this should make it less news worthy.
To your 2nd point, i think the main population of the west has a lot of empathy to the developing world. I see a lot of young people donating to charitable causes. There are also polls that show the americans care, although maybe less towards iraqis than other poor countries. The problem is the rich and powerful in the west don't care, and they are the ones that run the world atm. |

Send prayers to the families affected. And for the ones responsible. They got you on video camera, you are so stupid. |

While I am not saying anything bad about charity and good causes, it would be interesting to see the closets of those who do donate to foreign charity. (bill gates)
What do the Earth residents call themselves once there are Martians? Whenever such a situation occurs, then it will be:
Earth people care about Earth people. (Insert proper term)
Martians care about Martians.
Literally worlds apart. Though:
Humans care about humans.
Humans care about life.
Life cares about life.
I'm not making much sense, probably. |

If life is equal then equal attention should be given to similar events yet it is not so. You are making as much sense as i was with my initial response. Some seem more susceptible to news like this and the dissection of why it is so probably needs insight or some quotes from the philosophy gurus of this forum. I don't see world war 3 happening because of this, no reason to cry wolf. |

You made as much sense as I did, lol. I don't think life is equal, just that life cares about life, species will care about their own species, communities will care about their communities. While I don't believe WW3 will happen any time soon, it's still worth noting when millions, maybe billions, possibly trillions are being spent sending fleets upon fleets to a section of the world. (aegis, thaad, B-2, all that jazz.) |

Its not the amount of people that are killed that important, its the implications that it has that is. Just look at 9/11 for an example and how it changed the U.S |

We live in a beautiful yet chaotic world full of wonderfully transcendent distractions quite often distracted by randomness and unfortunately, too often, by psychotic evolved monkies.
I would send my prayors to people but I don't pray.
I am for sure thankful that my friends and family members that participated are safe and able to communicate.
If anyone has any ways to meaningfully contribute let's spread the word. |

i don't think this whole equal life thing is much of an argument for unfair news reporting. You know 9/11 for example had a huge impact on the world. It led to wars, increased terrorism from the united states and the middle east. Lots of things, so i would say that's more important news than some other attack that killed the same amount of people in Africa. Also when someone like steve jobs dies thats going to get reported a lot more than some person that no one knows about. Seems fair to me imo.
The propaganda model is something you should look at if your interested in bias in the media. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda_model
If you wanna see some extreme biases, the new york times reported 1175 column inches in their news paper on the khmour rouge genocide. And just 70 column inches on the east timor genocide. The two differences being that the cambodian one was one the US wasn't involved in, the later was one that they were involved in. |
