Prior to doing research, these are my gun-to-the-head picks for UFC on Fox 7.
• Henderson > Melendez (Clashing styles.)
• Cormier > Mir (I'll put Cormier in some parlays cuz he's too expensive for my liking. I think this has a good chance to go to decision. I'll also end up straight-betting Mir finishing ITD/Submission. Cormier's hands are being overrated to where people think he has massive power and can easily KO Mir.)
• Thomson > Diaz (Clashing styles.)
• Mein > Brown
• Larkin > Carmont (Hopefully Larkin has worked only on keeping it standing, cuz Carmon't striking is kinda bad, even though I used to think it was good for some reason. Carmont has that look to him where you think he'd be a killer, but that's just not the case.)
• Mendes > Elkins (Short notice fight for Elkins, and he's just not on Mendes' level atm.)
• Parke > Tuck
• Jury > Nijem
• Benavidez > Uyenoyama (Surprised this is so low on the FX card. Benavidez was on PPV for his last fight, which was a win.)
• Masvidal vs. Means (Need to go look at tape on Means, dunno if I seem him fight before.)
• Dillashaw > Viana (I think Viana will come out swinging with everything he has, just like in his last fight. Dillashaw just needs to dodge the first wave and then set up the take down after getting Viana's timing.
• Njokuani > Bowling (I like Bowling, but I think Njokuani will keep the distance nicely. Maybe a parlay on a prop bet for Bowling, cuz he does have power in his hands, but his striking is kinda limited imo.)
• Romero > Starks (Both Romero and Starks haven't fought for over a year, but Starks was terrible the last time I saw him. Romero was fed to Rafael Cavalcante in Strikeforce when he wasn't even on his level yet and only had 4 pro fights. The hype for Romero was his Olympic accomplishments. If the drop down in weightclass doesn't hurt Romero, I'll take his wrestling and sloppy heavy hands over Starks wrestling.)

Calvacante was Romeros 3rd real MMA fight.
Michal Fijalka was his only real opponent.
Sascha Weinpolter is/was medicore even for local (german/austrian)competition
the fights vs Nikita Petrovs and Laszlo Eck were fake.
I know the guys who organized these fights.
It was very clear that they had no interest in fighting romero and would lose in the first round .. but the organizer wanted to attract local viewers by presenting an olympic wrestler and those opponents were willing to "fake" fight for low money.
So overall Romero only had 2 MMA fights before facing Calvacante.
Romero is pretty dangerous but this fight was far too early in his MMA career

Josh Thomson vs. Nate Diaz grappling competition from over 6 years ago.
Many people aren't aware that JT is a black belt in BJJ.

Forgive my nubness, but how did they determine that Nate won that? Seemed very close, is it just ref decides? or is there a scoring system

^ There's some scoring system. I'm not sure how it works in BJJ.
Either way, the match itself is pretty old.
JT is gonna be my biggest bet on this card. Already have $40 on him, just waiting for his prop to win by decision, to come out. I'll probably do at least $100 on him altogether, since his straight line is +170 right now.

didnt watch whole match but scoring system is basically like this: you get points for takedowns (2), sweeps (2), passes to side control (3), knee on belly position (3), getting mount (4) and getting back with both hooks in (4). for good submission attempts you get advantage points which are used as a tiebreaker if the points are equal. so first you check who has more points, then you check who has more advantages, and after that the ref just makes a decision on who he thinks won the match if both of those are tied.
thats why you see guys pulling guard so often, cause if you pull guard you dont give up any points for a takedown and dont waste time fighting for one or trying to fight them off. but whats annoying is this: suppose someone pulls guard, gets a deep triangle attempt, barely misses (1 advantage), switches to armbar, almost gets it (2 advantages) gets his guard passed and guy holds side control for a few seconds (3 points), guy retains his guard, sweeps (2 points), gets on top and passes to half guard and the match ends, the guy with 2 submission attempts and a sweep loses 3-2 even though he controlled most of the match and had more relevant offense than his opponent just because a pass to side is worth more than subs or sweeps

Says the Brazilian.
Hugo's chance to win is by throwing wild bombs like he did in his last fight to earn his first ever KO. Dillashaw should get the take down pretty easily and win via guillotine, RnC, or decision.

Anyone like Josh Thompson at +170?
Can't decide how much of him vs Gil was him looking good and Gil looking bad, and how much of Nate vs Bendo was Nate looking bad and how much was Bendo looking great.
Thompson is pretty good at using the entire striking arsenal, which means lots of kicks. Not really powerful ones, but they score points. He's got pretty good movement as well, and should have a wrestling advantage and is a good BJJ blackbelt as well.
Hrm.

If you see him early enough on Friday, figure out a way to get him to watch the weigh-ins.
Once he sees the size difference and Cormier's body type, he'll want to bet more on Mir.

I have $40 on him already. Gonna wait and see what his prop bet will be, to win via decision. He will be my biggest bet on a single fighter on the card, as I'm looking to bet up to $100 on him in total. I'd bet more if he didn't do the movie gig.
Also, Thomson has had just over 1 month of solid training. He was overseas shooting some martial arts movie. I still believe in he will win though, cuz he trains year round.
Odds on Mein went to shit, should've bet earlier. Got decent sized bet on Larkin. Let's see if I can make it 5 events in a row (excluding those I have not bet) where I make money .
Yea, don't know a ton about him but he looked really sloppy on the UFC Sweden card a year ago and while he's big and strong I don't get the feeling that he's actually good at fighting.
1. Henderson can tie Jim Miller and George Sotiropoulos for the second longest win-streak in UFC lightweight history at seven. Gray Maynard holds the record with eight-straight lightweight wins.
2. Melendez is the fourth fighter in modern UFC history to challenge for a title in his or her debut with the organization. The previous challengers (Hayoto Sakurai at UFC 36, Frank Trigg at UFC 45 and Liz Carmouche at UFC 157) are winless (0-3).
3. Mir will fight in the UFC for the 21st time, the most of any heavyweight in the organization's history. His 21st UFC bout will move him into sixth place all-time behind Tito Ortiz, Matt Hughes, Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell,Josh Koscheck and B.J. Penn.
4. Cormier has never been taken down in his 12-fight MMA career.

9. Darren Elkins can take sole possession of the record for most Featherweight wins of any fighter in UFC history at six. 10. Chad Mendes faces an injury replacement for the third fight in a row.
11. Joseph Benavidez will tie Demetrious Johnson for the most Flyweight fights in UFC history at four.

14. According to FightMetric, Henderson has the longest average fight time of any fighter in UFC history with at least five bouts in the organization at 20:00 minutes.
15. Melendez will become just the seventh man in modern UFC history to compete for the UFC and Strikeforce titles at some point in his career (Paul Buentello, Renato Sobral, Dan Henderson, Jake Shields, Nate Marquardt, Nick Diaz).
16. A T.J. Dillashaw victory would tie him with Michael McDonald for the second longest win-streak in UFC bantamweight history behind Renan Barao (five-straight 135-pound wins).
17. According to FightMetric, Brown has the highest significant strike accuracy of any welterweight in UFC history at 57.72%. He also has the fourth most submission attempts in UFC welterweight history at 17.
18. Mir and Diaz are tied with Kenny Florian for the most submission victories in modern UFC history at eight. A submission win for either would give them sole possession of the record.
19. Melendez can become the first man in the modern UFC history to hold the Strikeforce and UFC championship belts at some point in his career.
20. Mein, Elkins and Dillashaw will compete for the second time in a 35-day span after registering victories at UFC 158 on March 16, 2013.

22. Henderson can tie Penn and Frankie Edgar for the most consecutive lightweight title defenses in UFC history at three.
23. Melendez's 336-day layoff is the second longest of his MMA career. His longest layoff ever was 357 days between April 2010 and April 2011.
24. Mir owns the most wins of any fighter in UFC heavyweight history at 14.
25. Elkins nor Mendes has ever lost a decision in a combined 32 professional fights.
26. Henderson has the longest active win-streak in the UFC lightweight division at six.

31. All six of Diaz's UFC losses are by way of decision.
32. Dillashaw has won three fights in a row since losing to John Dodson in the Bantamweight TUF 14 finals.
33. All six of Mir's professional defeats are by (technical) knockout.
34. According to FightMetric, Elkins has landed the second most strikes in UFC featherweight history at 491. Nam Phan leads the category with 540 total strikes landed.
35. Henderson will compete in his fourth UFC championship bout in a 419-day span. The only fighter in modern UFC history who has competed in as many UFC title bouts in that time period is Jon Jones.

Romero suffered an upper back injury after his fight with Cavalcante which has left him on the shelf for the past year.
“Don’t let my time away fool you, I have used it wisely, improving everything from my stand-up to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I am more prepared than I have ever been in my entire life.”
“It was clear after the Feijao fight that I needed to drop a weight class. I always walked around within five pounds of 205. When I stepped in the cage with Feijao he had 20 to 30 pounds on me and I felt the difference,” said Romero.
“We have been working on Yoel’s technical striking and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu extensively post recovery,” said Tina Vidal-Smith, Romero’s manager at ML Management.
“I’m not concerned about his wrestling,” said Romero. “I respect his abilities but there is no comparison.”
Romero now resides in Miami, FL and trains at the world renowned American Top Team at the Coconut Creek and Kendall locations. “I have sparring partners here and training at a caliber that I would have never received in Germany. I don’t think I would have been able to advance my career without it.”
------------------------
“I have been cutting down healthy for months now, and I’m very comfortable at this new weight and strong now.”
“Feijao was my first time ever fighting in an actual cage,” Romero revealed. “In Europe, all my fights were in a boxing ring. Also, I had very little BJJ and technical striking training, which put me at a disadvantage. I had never fought in as big a show before either, which just compiled all the issues. But, I’ve been working on all of that for 12 months now.”
“The injury recovery was long and slow, but everything is perfect now and I feel stronger than ever.”
“My biggest focus has been on improving my technical striking and BJJ. I’ve been working a lot one-on-one with the coaches at American Top Team Kendall and then sparring up at Coconut Creek with people like Hector Lombard.”
“I feel I have something to prove after my last fight. I want my fans to believe in me again.”
“If I were Starks, I would not try to out-wrestle me,” Romero said.
“Starks won’t face the first-time UFC jitters like I will.” “With the exception of one guy, he has not really fought anyone that I would consider a challenge, and at this point I feel like my wrestling and striking is at a higher level than his,” Romero said.
“In my last fight I came out slow,” he confessed. “I wanted to feel out the situation. I had never done that before in a fight, and it gave Feijao time to relax. I had never taken that strategy before in a fight, and I won’t make that mistake again.”

The major ones I noticed
Benavidez looked good. He usually looks super drained, this time he was exactly 125 and his face was only semi drained. His weight cut isn't a problem anymore it seems.
Bowling looked good during the weigh-in, same as usual just smaller cuz of the new weight class.
Nate had a little trouble on the scale. He's already going to move up to welterweight after this fight, win or lose. Thomson didn't have a full training camp, and he said it took him 4-5 weeks to get back into fighting shape, which lets me know he's good to go, Hopefully Thomson doesn't have any cardio trouble, but since it's a 3 round fight, he should be okay.
Mir looked great. His chest and stomach were solid, and he isn't carrying around that beer belly like usual.
Benson looked tired walking out to the stage. But he always handles his weigh cuts just fine.

Mir has been on TRT for awhile. He looks ripped cuz he's actually training out of a real camp in Jacksons MMA, instead of his own gym in Las Vegas where his wife and kids would always come to see him and he was surrounded by yes-men.
If Mir could only work on his speed, he'd be so much better. When I see him fight, I feel like I'm watching a 150 pound man inside of a 250 pound mans body, in that he's so slow with his punches and his high round kick is so telegraphed. It's no wonder why he excelled in BJJ. His size and natural brute strength on the ground, mixed with skill, is dangerous.
Mir looked ripped. At current price he is must bet imo.

swore id never bet against bendo again, but seems like +250 has value. taking a small stab on gilbert.
but man, i finally get bendo now and why he is so so good and why people have such a hard time exploiting the things hes weaker at. for someone who almost never finishes anyone he is super fucking dangerous everywhere. at range his leg kicks are insane. in close his elbows and clinch fighting is vicious. hes imo the best athlete in mma and his takedowns are great. his GNP is great. he has some of the best guillotines in mma. his chin and sub defense rival guys like jon fitch and he never gets tired and fights at a great pace all fight. its really incredible that he doesnt finish more guys, especially in later rounds when he is fighting at 100% vs guys who have been beaten on for a long fight.
but at the same time, his boxing is still mediocre, his defensive wrestling is much worse than his offensive wrestling, and while he seems unsubmittable, he does get into quite a few precarious positions on the ground. at some point someone will take advantage of his weaknesses, but i dont know if gil is the guy to do it. hes a blown up 145 facing one of the most physically dominating fighters in the sport. i dont think one bad fight vs josh thomson is enough to call gil overrated and still think hes every bit as good as he showed in some of his other fights. i just dont know if he can overcome what bendo has. worth a small bet though, time to go 0-6 vs bendo

Also Bendo isn't even the best athlete on this card. GOGO Yoel Romero

He's been on TRT since June 2nd, 2012, legally. He obviously was on it before then, but that's just my opinion.
Anyway, TRT won't improve his speed, which is his major problem. Training at Jackson's MMA will improve him as a fighter, but he's only been there for 3 months so far, and you can't expect him to be this slick new fighter in that short amount of time, especially since he's already been in the UFC for 12 years and is set in his ways.
Mir said he's staying at Jackson's MMA, even after this fight is over. I think it will help him grow as a fighter, and I hope he does well in the future and doesn't get KO`ed anymore.
Lastly, I actually don't care if Mir beats Cormier, cuz that would make me money and also, Cormier isn't sure what he's doing yet after this fight, whether it's staying at HW or moving to LHW. Cormier weighed 229 lbs, and decided to put on 6 more pounds cuz Frank is so big.

I Got a last minute bet on Dillashaw/Viana under 2.5 at +120
Figured Viana would be throwing bombs like last time cuz he probably thinks he can KO anyone now, and Dillashaw could win via submission or TKO.

Melendez would have won if he would have kept the pace. He slowed down after round 1.
exactly what i think.
I also see it 3-2 Benson despite thinking he is an idiot.
Melendez could have won but at one point he slowed down too much.

Rousey on the left side. Looks like she was in shock while having to watch her boy get beat up.
----------
Random statement/question about Nate's payment by someone at MMA Junkie: That Diaz pay is obviously a mistake, he made 37/37 vs Cowboy at UFC 141 and made 50k for his last fight vs Bendo which he lost, so he was on a 50/50 for that fight.
Response from MMA Junkie staff: It's not a typo/mistake. That's the official disclosed payday.
Sounds like they restructured his deal, and there may have been some money upfront that isn't reflected here.
Now, the usual disclaimer: The figures do not include deductions for items such as insurance, licenses and taxes. Additionally, the figures do not include money paid by sponsors, which can oftentimes be a substantial portion of a fighter's income. They also do not include any other "locker room" or special discretionary bonuses the UFC oftentimes pays.
For example, as previously reported, UFC officials handed out additional $50,000 UFC on FOX 7 bonuses to Romero and Thomson (dual "KO of the Night" winners), and Brown and Mein ("Fight of the Night").
