How do celebrity phones get hacked?

So I just found out that a year ago unbeknownst to me private photos of the lovely Christina Hendricks had been leaked from her phone. Seems like almost every actress nowadays has some sort of nude pictures floating around. How do hackers manage to systematically break into celebrity phones? Anyone know what the process looks like more or less (or is just simply someone stealing their phone) and how to prevent it?

99,99% of the time it is not the phone (OS) itself that is hacked, but the medium by which it is stored outside of the phone.
E.g. e-mail accounts, cloud storages (iCloud etc) or computers that are routinely syncing to the phone.

Someone with a botnet might run something that checks to see if any of his slaves are owned by celebrities, and
goes on to directly target them if there are and steal their iCloud or e-mail credentials and/or make a trojan
that will be automatically synced to their phone and then reports back to you.

But there can be so much value in celebrity's phones, not strictly financial,
but in other ways to people who obsess over certain celebrities, that there might be someone directly targeting them.
You only need look at how many people are obsessed with celebrities and how many people are black hats to see that these might overlap
and someone with serious knowledge of phone OS's and hacking/networking might be performing direct attacks.

The easiest way to do a direct attack on a specific phone, I would imagine, is compromising a poorly secured WiFi that you know the owner might be using,
at for example Starbucks or whatever and performing a MITM on whatever they sign onto (then goto 99,99% of the time = e-mails, iCloud)

So if you're not copying your photos or whatever to an outside medium like an e-mail account or iCloud or you don't sync your phone with those you should be good?

Jessica Alba, Vanessa Hudgens, Ke$ha, Snooki, Leighton Meester to name some. You'd think celebs would be more careful by now, though who knows - some of them might very well be publicty stunts.

They get leaked because they r celebs so security answers like "what elementary school did you go to" are easy to find on google.

According to the U.S. Attorney's office in Los Angeles, Chaney gained access to the email accounts of Mika Kunis, Scarlett Johansson, Renee Olstead and dozens of other celebrities by resetting their passwords using the "forgot your password" feature. Chaney apparently used publicly available information on the celebrities to correctly answer the security questions needed to reset the passwords on the Gmail, Apple and Yahoo email accounts they used.

I always thought they leaked them out themself. Naked photo its good PR, and "got hacked" is a pretty good excuse in most people's book.

I call bullshit on these leaks. It's never Jennifer Lawrence or Kate beckinsadle, always some b -Lister or actress who's career is going nowhere or is in the toilet already. No homo coz I still enjoy these pics though lol

I do agree that well over 90% of sex-tape / phone pic 'leaks' are either9 a viral PR campaign or angry ex-significant other.

that being said, I really doubt it's the case with Christina Hendricks. Her career seems to be pretty solid and she's been married for quite a while. My first guess was she had her phone tied to some cloud network and they got pulled as Taco suggested.

On a semi-related note there was a pretty good Carolla podcast I listened to on a recent epic roadtrip where Tommy Lee gives some of the story on how his Pamela Anderson sex tape got leaked (http://adamcarolla.com/tommy-lee/)

He maintains that even though most people think they put it out on purpose, he actually knows exactly who stole it and sold it but there was all kinds of legal barriers out there stopping him from getting the guy or at least getting any money from the sales.

The cliffs if you don't want to listen to the podcast are that he was doing some kind of home remodeling, and he had the sex tape along with some other things in a safe in his garage. It was a small crew (I think just 3 guys) doing the housework and on the last day of the work he realized they had stolen the safe. Presumably they cracked the safe and discovered the sex tape, selling it to some major porno company for big bucks.

Tommy Lee attempted to file some lawsuits to at least get some money from the porn company as they had made millions off it but as I recall the porn company wasn't legally obligated to say how they came into possession of the tape and Tommy Lee didn't have any legal recourse to stop them from profiting from it nor did he have legal recourse to receive profits from it. I don't remember exactly why, but I think it came down to something like 'it's so widespread now you can't legally put in an order to cease its publication or acquire profit from it'
