Season 1 did a great job of recreating book 1. They were nearly identical.
Season 2 changed some minor stuff and left out 2 very important characters. I'm not sure if they will be added in season 3 somehow, but it really bothers me that they arent in there.
If you want to get the whole Song of Ice and Fire story, you can skip book 1 and read from book 2 onwards. But you can get away with skipping book 2 as well if you dont want to read an extra 600 pages of awesomeness.

Season 3 includes things from Book 2 and Book 3. They from now on out aren't going to be doing just straight Season # = Book #. Since there are so many new characters and stuff going on they didn't think they could just straight go season to book. But yeah stoked for Season 3.
Yeah I already started the 2nd book and as the story goes i doubt S2 will end further than the middle of book 2. Doing 1 season 1 book is possible. Look at Lord of the rings a 1000 page book turned into 10hrs trilogy. Considering 1 episode is 1hr they could easily do a book in a season

And disliking a show, after just 1 episode? makes no sense, you know nothing about the history or characters, its just an introductory episode (if it was the first) that obviously is not going to be that strong, you need to see half the season at least, imo.
i also think the slow pace of GoT is unbearable. it's better when it's on dvd so you can watch all the shows together. there's too many story lines and characters being introduced. thought season 1 was overwhelming to someone who wasn't familiar with the books.
Well there are many shows whom I like... breaking bad, 24, boardwalk empire, sopranos, entourage +++++++++ but game of thrones is the only show where I will sit ready to download the second a new episode comes out... so definitly my favourite show and nr 2 on my personal list is not even close. But its ofc IMO

Can't wait for the show to start again. Not sure what I think about the books after reading all of them. I think the story as a whole is fabulous, but could be a bit more concise at times. I like how George R. R. Martin just doesn't give a fuck, though some people dislike that in his books.

In the books she wins because hes weak as fuck altough Jaime keeps thinking of how skilled/ strong she is, on the other side I think later Brienn is shown as being also amazed at how good Jaime was able to fight despite being so weakened and she was sure he could have bested her in full strenght.

However - and this is just pure speculation here - I think you're somewhat right about that there are two major gods - the Lord of Light being the good (but ambigious, as is everything with G. R. R. Martin) guy, and the Other, "Whose name we shouldn't speak" (Voldemort, anyone? ) being the bad guy, responsible for the Others and their zombie stuff.
There are a few minor "real magic" stuff going on as well in the ASOIAF world (the Children of the Forest and their weirwoods, associated with "the old gods", the warlocks of the east come to mind) but as it stands now, only these two gods seem to really exist, and other religions seem to be a load of bull. I don't know, it pretty much seems like a funny jest on mainstream religion to me (as in the most prevalent faith of the seven gods seem to be totally empty, while this obscure thing about a lord of light, fire and shadow being "true", and holding real power).
im not finished with 5th book yet but it seems to me like the faceless men also use some sort of magic, but its yet to be revealed
tbh its indeed kind of annoying that the dark god's name should-not-be-spoken ... dafuq this aint no Voldemort and isnt Cold Hands a goodguy zombie ... he is so far ... there is yet more to be revealed about Bran's abilities ( perhaps all of Stark's abilities ), also what doesnt add up is that John is supposedly a Targaryen however he is also a warwick which seems to be a Stark ability ( still dont know who are his parents havent reached that part, but i guessed that he was taken only for protection by Eddard ....

Also, that bathtub scene was one of the best in the whole series so far imho.

Did anybody else feel like the scene at the beginning between Rob Stark and his wife was awkward? It felt forced to me, or maybe just too long. He dropped the same line twice about her nakedness distracting him from planning the war. Maybe the acting was just bad I dunno. Didn't feel right to me.

Actors playing Tywinn, Tyrion, Daenerys & Jaimie should win every award out there imo. Especially Tyrion. He plays his character 10 times better even than whats described in the book. Too bad the season s coming to an end soon and we have to wait another year :/ and there are like 3 months more till Breaking Bad comes out so there ll be no good series out there in 3 weeks

Apparently the 'last' book is going to be at *least* two more. By the time he's on his 7th, I'm guessing he'll realise he needs to do another couple books - as you said, just to tie up the loose ends.

Meh, he's only 64. Should make it through the last two books. Also his pace should increase somewhat seeing as he probably has signed some sort of deal with HBO to finish the story within some time frame. Worst case scenario, the HBO writers can finish the story, which wouldn't be that bad seeing as they have already interpreted some things differently in the show.
I'm also not a fan of Daenerys's acting. I feel like in the books George is just writing a huge tangent for her so he can work on the characters in Westeros (and elsewhere...). I think it's the sort of thing that happens when you make things up as you go. Not sure how well he mapped out the entire story before hand, but it's quite complex so even if he did this could still happen.
Anyway what I didn't like about Daeny's acting in the last epsiode was that she seemed to have this sadistic smile about her and I'm not sure that's how her character was intended in the book (though it wouldn't be unbefitting for a Tagaryen, maybe that's the angle the TV writers are going for). She's not a cruel character. I would have like to see some more genuine anger and disgust, it's like she's just fucking the slavers up for fun and being a bitch to everyone lol. Tbh, it might also just be a hard role to play, however if something is off with her character, the directors are also to blame somewhat as they are there to judge how a scene comes across as a whole. It's like the scene at the beginning with Rob and his wife. Those two scenes seemed a little off to me. Acting was poor/they just didn't feel right, though the first one was clearly worse to me.

Well they lost full balance of most characters. Most characters barely hold it together without flipping especially Cersei. If she'd ever tell Margery that she wants her dead all her plans would be ruined. Her main target was to win her trust not just plainly tell her that she wants her dead. So 4 more seasons after this one. Book 4 and 5 have a lot of overlap I guess, so are not distinct parts in time, so if they can somehow compress that, it should work out with books 6 and 7. Fwiw, there should be 10 seasons, but I'm not sure the public would even want to see that. People here are already complaining that the pace is too slow.

I don't remember all the details from reading the book and I read them on Kindle so it's not that easy to just flip through the pages to find certain things, but I think when Drogo is hitting hit she is 13-14 and where we are in the series now she is around 16. I mean there is almost no way she is 12 where she is in the series now.

The spell probably has some area of effect, and maybe the players who gets their mind attempted at a take over gets to roll a will or some kind of fortutide check, so maybe doesn't work on powerful characters. And maybe he needs to be close by to control them properly. Oh, maybe some risk to the user if whatever he controls take damage.
I think that Crow Stark guy just rode off to stop the bird or something.

It's definitely ludicrously hard to skinchange into a human,
but there is a theory as to why Valyria even at the height of its power never conquered the Westeros:
There were powerful skinchangers that the Valyrians either thought or knew might skinchange into their dragons and all hell would break loose,
and that is was only luck for Aegon the Conqueror that none powerful enough remained when he conquered Westeros.

It's actually not that major of a change from the books because the characters left out really don't make much of a difference (but imho they add just the little extra color that makes GRRM stand out. Understandable that not all of that can be put on TV however). And yet, I still prefer the original version (obviously). I just find it more plausible that Robb suddenly fell for an obscure, once powerful (in name) house's maiden daughter when he found out that his brothers supposedly died, fucked her and married her because that's honorable, than him falling for the hots of some commoner from Essos. Just a lot more fitting for his character.
I guess that is also why I prefer the book over the series by a vast margin. Some of the minor detail changes (and added scenes) are ill-fitting and out of character.

I agree, but I'll add or elaborate on one of your points.
By cutting off a loose end through the TV series, I no longer make conspiracy theories about Robb's wife and a secret chance of prenency etc.

good read so far. I'm impressed how they manage to pack so much into a 10 episode season, I wouldn't complain if they spread it out a little more
