I've seen here and there blogs about who is reading what or people, incl. myself, asking someone to recommend books in a given genre. Looked around but there is no real books recommendation thread and I'm guessing most of us have titles to offer.

This is my personal favourite. Its a mind blowing book, althought some might consider it somewhat shallow, which i think is done on purpose. Biegbeder has a very specific style which insults the reader and yet that itself makes you go through his books.I d recomment pretty much everything written from him. He does have 4-5 books more.

A boy follows his dream - on short. Still must read. Action begins slightly before WW 1

Well. Long awaited movie s coming out so you obviously want to read this.

This is a very dark book. Ayn Rand desribes the situation in Russia very realistically and makes you think all around about any given form of government

Yes, yes.Hated by many, praised by even more - this biography will influence you no matter what.

Last but not least.
If you have only seen the movie, dont react prematurely, it was terribad and if you havent read the book id be amazed if you understand 1/2 of the ideas in it. I was very skeptical about reading this at first. But Stephen King summed it up well "A violent, jarring, speed-rap novel that generates nearly constant suspense. . . I couldn't stop reading."

Will continue later. But this is most of what made a good impression on me last couple of weeks

Looking for some beginner books on psychology or the economy if anyone has some suggestions.

they are easy reading

Can't right-headedly recommend any other book on economics or social science to anyone until they've read these.. for context..with the exception of:

Thinking Fast & Slow - easy reading essential psychology. basically a well-woven summary of tons of different experiments and the general concepts that have been developed in regards to the data gained via the experiments discussed

It presents a lot of the questions and scenarios of the experiments to the reader as you go through the book. Its very entertaining.

hundreds of historical anecdotes about mass-delusions and such (ie stories about everything from the East Indian Trading Company, to the alchemists of the middle ages. Euro-centric book)
Extraordinary Popular Delusions and The Madness of Crowds by Mackay
"a book on popular folly" -wiki

Thanks for the recommendations. Are those economy books good for beginners?

Reading on a tablet has a lot of advantages, for example, with the Kindle App you open a book and you pick up immediately on the last paragraph you were on, you always know the porcentage of the book that you have read, a big part of the best books ever written don't have copyright anymore so you can legally download them for free.

I still like to buy physical books but yea digital is the future, the only thing that maybe is a turn off is that the screens in some tablets are really bright, I don't know about other apps but in the Kindle App there's an option to make the screen darker.

Also to contribute to the thread the last 3 books that I read and liked a lot:

Simulacra and Simulation - Jean Baudrillard
The Nibelungenlied - Anonymous?
The Brothers Karamazov - Dostoevsky

I feel more stressed and anxious reading on an ipad, I prefer to read books on the kindle, it's more comfortable than books too I think.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Game of Thrones.

I personally like to read autobiographies of remarkable people.

Most recent best one is about an American Art Forger who got away with selling over a million dollars worth of frauds in auction houses + flea markets by reverse engineering paintings from American Painters.

His biggest score was over a half a million dollars and he got away with it all because in the auction house they have in the fine writing *caveat emptor , which means Buyer Beware.

I like the balls this guy had the first time he passed off his first forgery, the process of replicating a masterpiece, his mentality and rationalization around it, how he considers himself a great painter but yet he can't come up with anything original.

Autobios are great because you can see their self delusions as a third party but also you see the mentality around achieving
remarkable things.

yeah i started reading Game of Thrones like 2 weeks ago from 2nd book as Daut recommended, best fantasy i've read so far. However 4th book somehow feels like a filler so far but im in the very beginning like 300th page or smtng
Also recommend

Althought i've only read 100 pages of it and stopped reading cause of Game of thrones its ridiculously good, its just that i prefered something more like GoT to read at this point.

Pretty good, I'm going to the gym about 5 times a week and am running around 3 miles on the treadmill. My rec basketbnall team is 11-1 and we're about to go State in early April.

I'm not concentrating so much on weight loss other than getting in real good shape and my current goal is to run a half marathon in August.

But I have a really good intuition when it comes to stuff, like, I predicted the internet would be huomoungous (I'm so lucky if I spelled that right lol) and wrote an essay about it when I was a kid. Teachers lolled and hinted I was a retard.

a compilation of recent interviews/questions with noam chomsky.

a disturbing look at how the mass media in america has manufactured the 'consent' of their public. Failing reading the book, you can watch the movie.

havn't read all of this yet, it's quite long. Failing reading this you can read a very good Excerpt from the book here. http://www.chomsky.info/books/power01

the claimed facts in the books above have an extensive list of footnotes at the end of the book.

yap the alchemist seems pure shallowness to me, its fundamentals i totally agree with however

can someone recommend some Fantasy ? Perhaps something GoT style ( not Wheel of Time please i dont feel like reading 14? books + not finished by the same author ) or something like Discworld by Pratchet ( I enjoyed first two books about Rincewind but the 3rd one kind of bores me + its not written in the same satirical style like the previous two ) or something like The Hunger Games

Started reading too many sociological/philosophical books lately + Chomsky which comes a bit too heavy mentally to be reading before sleep

Try Brandon Sanderson (is the one finishing wheel of time ) or Malazan book of the fallen (long series, like 10 books i think)

And maybe

or

Both by Gene Wolfe, im reading The Knight, so far looks interesting

Malazan book of the fallen, start with book 2. The writing style is hard to get used to but many people rate it higher than game of thrones.

good book for the people interested in tribal societies on lp.

Can anyone recommend me good books on the history of ancient greece and ancient rome? I'm interested in the way people lived back then, war, poltics, gay sex, slavery, marriage, religion, significant events- important people like cicero or alexander. anything that covers that stuff.

Reviving this thread cause this book is something absolutely everyone should read. Then you should buy a copy for everyone you know, and they should buy a copy for everyone they know after that:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...hy-we-sleep?ac=1&from_search=true

Every single claim is backed by thorough research and tests. The tone of the book is extremely precise, Walker is making sure he doesn't overstep even slightly in way possible due to the fragile nature of the topic perceived by Western society. It's a fairly short book (350 pages) but it took me more than a month to finish as I think my subconsciousness simply pushed me away from it, even if it was a quite interesting read. The facts presented there are frightening, to say the least (for me and what used to be my lifestyle anyway, but i'm fairly certain it would be the same for a lot of people here and in western societies in whole).

If you are super lazy and dont like reading I suggest you watch all of his TED talks, except he only presents around 30% of the facts from the books there and doesn't really go that in-depth due to the time limitation.
