In POE u can do just about anything u can imagine. My first character that beat merciless was a marauder which is what you would consider to be the bread and butter 2h melee char just by looking at him that was a spellcaster.

That being said, there are several cookie cutter and very viable summoner builds. Realistically u can be a full time summoner, a summoner that cast spells, a summoner that uses a bow... whatever. U can come up with almost anything in POE and with each character you play it increases the replay value as you come up with more ideas and see more things. This is the reason i recommend to almost everyone to play HC. It makes the game much more enjoyable to play and dying is actually this experience where u are tempted to try new things out.

If u look at a game like diablo 3 there is almost 0 reason to ever make a new char and the amount of diversity in characters just really isnt there. POE outside of people copying streamers builds is this game where almost every character is different and everyone isnt wearing the same set of unique gear and other boring shit. Uniques are basically build enabling in POE and not usually best in slot. IDK I could go on forever but u should definitely all try POE if u enjoy ARPGs at all, it's free.

Its weak spots are boss monster design, a very mediocre and superficial story that doesnt help you get involved and no cinematics which makes the weak story even less immersive, and those areas are exactly in what D3 excels, they should have addressed that before the expansions

I mean the cinematics from blizzard are always top notch, but the d3 story line is absolute horseshit and the immersion is ruined every 3seconds by random pop culture references or your character acting like a whiny teenager.

the story is worse than in D1 and D2 but its still better than in PoE... I remember beating Dominus not even realizing I was facing the final boss... I was so underwhelmed
