You have a point here, I thought about it myself, if you think of the Rock'n'Roll who was frowned upon when it emerged in the 50's for it was considered "subversive" and immoral. And now it is looked back as one of the golden age of music. But then, if we accept your point of view, we must admit that Bieber/Gaga and their kinds do good music ? I have trouble with that, not because they are commercially successful does it imply they're actually good musicians nor their songs are any good in any way...Makes me think of Matheson's "I'm Legend" which challenges the idea of the mass vs individual and what is normality ? Am I too old to appreciate the new mutations in music ? Or does it simply suck balls ?

Odds are exactly 50%: it either happens or not

Also give some credit to genres.. I mean just look at the evolution within Jazz and everyday lot's of great stuff both classic and more experimental come out and it's still awesome.
Perfecting a genre, or exploring it, or however you want to put it is still an awesome way to make new music in my eyes.

If you want good music you just have to look a little.. A lot of independent stuff out there is very good imo.

I'm not saying good music doesn't exist anymore, there are still very good musicians out there I could cite hundreds but my contention is that they don't make it to the top of charts today which are saturated with shitty computer based and autotuned songs. Your point about jazz is interesting but you agree that perfecting a genre is different than creating a new genre ?

And it's a bad way to make a counter point with a list that includes 10 types of christmas song genres

eh it makes more sense on the link cuz they have it divided into genre and sub genres, so genre was just 'christmas songs" and all the others were subgenres, but when i copied it over it lost formatting and i'm far to lazy to reformat it

I don't know lol

And I think most of what is popular is popular because it is popular... Just mass produce and make money.

Before and after Illuminati control.. jk jk

Before and after making money over making music.

And Kid A always comes to my mind more than any other album for originality.

Kid A is slightly better imho... King of Limbs is like the same album but minus a lot of miles underwater

I had the same conversation as the OP with friends. There was a time that Hendrix, Beatles,... were actually the popular music. Then corporations got involved to make big money off the music industry and the "performers" replaced musicians. So instead of artists and art people got into celebrities and fame. Ever since then its been down hill. Madonna, boy bands, Spears. Then when you thought that we can't go lower than that you got Bieber and MileyCyrus.
We had a couple of good musicians that have also contributed to this downward slope. Like Elvis or Metallica, but in general the popular "music" is not about music anymore.

This is a perfect example. This performance was not received by many. It just doesn't sell in today's society.

has anyone on this forum actually purchased music in the last like 5-10 years? I can't remember having done that

EDIT: Are you saying Gnarles Barkley particularly Cee-lo Green isn't popular/well received in todays world, or that the particular version of Crazy in the video wasn't well received?

That particular version of the song when performed live was not well received because many critics called it slow and boring or sth like that. But CeeLo didn't care anyways. Thats one reason that I like Cee Lo, he tried not to give a shit about public.

PS: I have gone to live performances, does that count as paying for music?

No, i meant buying albums. Not going to shows or blu-ray concerts etc. As a random thing artists make far more from concert purchases than they do from cd purchases.

No, there are almost no "active" artists that I support today. I can only think of Mark Knopfler but even for him I don't buy the records. I do however buy merchandise like T-Shirts from his site. I think that way the artist actually gets the money directly rather than getting small royalty from the record company. I might be wrong even on that though.

lol there is way more music out there than what we hear on the radio

music today has more artists participating in creating it than ever before in human history. by a fucking long shot. there is plenty of innovative or just simply good music being made today

people who cry about the good ole days are lame, but I think it is just a natural part of human psychology so w/e
