Pirate bay removes torrent links

now uses magnet links so "users" are held liable instead of the site, let's build communities in jail.

This is like a desperate attempt to thwart lawsuits(unfortunately users dont want to go to jail as well so this is not going to work at all). Fuckn ACTA bullshit pressure seems to be working.

Smaller sites like kickasstorrents and extratorrent will probably go the same route soon, them being much less funded/popular.

No wonder. I only download from there every once in a while but I get that pop-up every time I did.

This doesnt endanger users any more than torrent files did. You're still sharing data via p2p like you always were. Technically TPB should have been safe hosting torrents, because a torrent does not contain any data related to what you're downloading, it's just peer connection info from other users. But the **AA have still been able to shut down torrent sites, so now they have moved to magnet links, where NO FILE is hosted whatsoever, so there is no possible way for a site like TPB to be accused of infringing on anything. It would be like suing google for pointing users to pirated material. The risk is the same as it always was for the end-user, so this changes nothing. Just make sure you use a good ip filter like peerblock to block known ip's from connecting to your pc and collecting evidence of file sharing.

This post is so scary on so many levels. You really think the US govt will go after someone, say, who has been torrenting for 10 years?

Realistically, they DO have a very solid argument (considering it's copyrighted material) but blah, fuck them. I want my free stuff.

I can't give 2 shits about songs. but movies and tv damn I'm going to miss not needing to watch television, notwaiting for stuff to come out in cinemas and not missing out on a ton of great indies/documentaries etc.

Internet in 10 yrs will be fine...ppl just switch to new services when old ones r banned e.g. napster users moved to torrents. If torrents r cracked down on then ppl will move again. Also anytype of firewall or censorship (in America at least) will be circumvented fairly easily by anyone who cares to get passed it. Plus odds of that going up r extremely small since it would face a giant backlash. There right now is no "ACTA" pressure since it isnt even an actual policy yet. Piratebay is getting pressued by british, us, and swedish gov't again dur to mpaa/riaa lobbying. (just google mpaa sweden piratebay) there r a ton of articles on it.

This is, in fact, illegal in America under the DMCA of '98. Hence y if u google for something pirated there is almost always a messege at the bottom. I googled "metallica torrent" and at the btm had multiple things saying

Under current law though a website only needs to remove links or material if given notice and proof of illegality from the copyright holder. As of now there r simply so many torrents that its impossible to block them all. I mean there were 18 torrents that pulled up before that messege.

the mpaa/riaa have done this successfully numerous times. Odds though r small of getting caught, personally I would have no problem going to jail for something I believe in (fairly sure total market value of my pirated material is slightly north of $1mil)

afaik this was also implemented to decrease the size of the site, so they can create backups very easly and be carried by anyone in a usb, in theory with this is impossible now to take down TPB, and if that happens there would be A LOT of backups to take it up again in no time.

Theory is all good that everything will remain the same. Thing is megavideo had the lawbooks thrown at them (possible jailtime) and btjunkie already succumbed to pressure. Unless ACTA goes away I don't feel happy about the way this is progressing.
