The first episode of the new season of High Stakes Poker has finally aired. In this season, we will see a lot of familiar faces return, and some new players as well. There has also been a change of staff, as AJ Benza got replaced by Kara Scott who will be handling interviews on the floor, while Gabe Kaplan is still there to do the commentary. The blinds are $400/$800 with a $200 ante and the buy-in has to be at least $200,000, with a maximum of $500,000.

In this sixth season, we will also see two players from LiquidPoker making their debut. On day 2 we will see Lex "RaSZi" Veldhuis. He will be playing against players like Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius and Andrew "good2cu" Robl. On the third and last day of the series, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier is making his first appearance. He will be playing against Doyle Brunson, Mike Matusow, and also Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan, amongst others. In fact, Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan will be playing on all 3 days, to the delight of many viewers.

During the first episode however, we won't see any LiquidPoker-action. Most action seems to be focusing around Phil Hellmuth and Phil Ivey. Other players starting at the table are Tom "durrr" Dwan, Daniel Negreanu, Gus Hansen, Antonio Esfandiari, Dario Minieri and Andreas Hoivold (winner of the EPT Dortmund in 2007). Later during the day (the series was filmed over 3 days, each with a different line-up), we will see Eli Elezra join the action, and Phil Laak and Jason Mercier are also going to appear on day 1.

Players appearing on day 2 include:

    * Tom Dwan
    * Phil Ivey
    * Daniel Negreanu
    * Barry Greenstein
    * Dennis Phillips
    * Lex “RaSZi” Veldhuis
    * Andrew “good2cu” Rob
    * Patrik Antonius
    * Phil Laak

And on day 3 we will be seeing:

    * Tom Dwan
    * Phil Ivey
    * Daniel Negreanu
    * Eli Elezra
    * Phil Laak
    * Doyle Brunson
    * Mike Matusow
    * Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier
    * Phil “OMGclayaiken” Galfond
    * David Benyamine

These line-ups are not the complete line-ups, as it is rumored that there are a few "surprise appearances" during this season. We'll have to wait and see. Apparently, Tom "durrrr" Dwan was pretty tired during this season, as his epic battle with Isildur1 took place during these days of shooting (in which he lost over 5 million dollar!).

Episode one already shows some interesting hands, and lots of chips changing hands.

I was sad to see AJ Benza go, I thought he and gabe made a good team, yeah he was stupid but I thought their commentary was pretty funny and Gabe had some good insights.

I thought Gabe doing it with that woman would be shite however,

Gabe commentating on his own with the woman in the suite is much better than AJ and gabe together imo, I think he handles the hands well, keeps playing up with the conversation and actually doesnt have to spend all his time answering stupid questions from AJ or explaining obvious things to him.

Its like HSP revolutionised TV poker with its first season, but then when PAD and Million dollar cash game or w/e caught up they came ahead with better commenatry, sick 200 ante deep games, 8 players also means its not a nit fest like 10 or 9 max but theres more legitimate hands than like 6 max, and leaves room for people to be busto'd and still a full table. Also the 200 ante in there means the BB is 800 but theres 2800 in the pot when its coming round to late position, which is going to mean so many raises and 3 bets going on I'd imagine...

Good first episode!

poker is soooo much easier when you flop setsLast edit: 15/02/2010 19:27

+1

But bring back AJ Benza imo - I am all for getting a good looking tart on the telly but seriously what is the point when all she asks are really inane and obvious questions. At least AJ and Kaplan eventually got a good bit of banter going.

only watched half an episode, but they were good interview questions so far, good to get the players talking. I love kaplan.

also entirely different situations.

First hand was raised and 3-bet from earlier position

Second he got 3-bet by Ivey in late position, and he had some bad timing with this 4-bet bluff.

It's two completely different scenariious.

yea diffrent situations yes, but its still hillarious, dwan raises utg, and got squeezed by dario, his raising range and his sqeezing range is alot lighter than AQ because you know how LAG dwan and dario play, and he got position with the AQ, and i dont really like the AJo 4bet bluffing against ivey. but unlucky 4 sure.

The stand up scenes are scripted, the banter between them during the hands is legit. So, Gabe probably thinks AJ is a dumbass, but he's a jokester about it and realizes theres a lot he doesnt understand.

bye now
