For once and for all, these champions could fight over the bragging rights of beating several other Main Event champions in this prestigious event.
Unfortunately, not all of the ex-champions were there. Some had passed away, while others were unable or unwilling to come (Russ Hamilton for example, a bit of both). 20 of Main Event champions during the last 40 years of this WSOP were there, to compete for a car and the newly created Binion's Cup Trophy.
The final table started with the real clash of the titans: Doyle Brunson, Tom McEvoy, Berry Johnston, Phil Hellmuth (with just over 2 big blinds), Jim Bechtel, Dan Harrington, Huck Seed, Carlos Mortensen, Robert Varkonyi, and the youngest champ in history, Peter Eastgate.
And against expectations, it was Tom McEvoy who bested an even more unlikely runner-up to take the title. In the last hand of the event, his opponent Robert Varkonyi leads out on the flop, and gets called by McEvoy. The turn brings perhaps the most interesting card in the deck: and Varkonyi bets again for McEvoy to minraise him. Varkonyi moves all-in and McEvoy quickly calls with for the nut straight. Varkonyi shows his and with the we know that Tom McEvoy is the winner!
McEvoy, who won the WSOP Main Event in 1983 after besting 107 opponents to win $540,000, is awarded with a shiny 1970 Corvette Stingray and the inaugural Binion Cup Trophy.
"The car was just the frosting on the cake," McEvoy said. "Beating all my colleagues that were talented enough to win the Main Event was what it was really about. I'm totally overjoyed. One of the reasons I was so determined to win this was to re-establish myself and prove, not only to myself, but to everybody else, that I can still do this."

Awesome performance for jamie gold
- 2nd hand, loses two-thirds of his stack overplaying JJ. He actually would have probably lost a lot less, because the board was low and connected and got ugly, but by the turn he was whining "o.k., take it" "I guess I'll pay it off", etc., so Carlos Mortensen naturally kept value betting instead of slowing down the action.
- few hands later, loses half his remaining stack by calling to river with J7 on Jxx flop.
- despite having only about 1200 chips left in 10 minutes, he proceeds to call 3 successive preflop raises out of position, and check/folds the flop each time, losing half his remaining stack.
- Uncertain if he raised/called yet again the next hand, but on a Q9x flop, Harrington bet and Gold called allin with 84s and a flush draw, when Harrington had Q9. Doesn't get there, out in under 20 minutes 1st level.

Jamie Gold... more like Jamie Aluminum. He definitely isn't gold. I guess the self appointed "worlds best bluffer" had another plane to catch just like he always does in HSP. |

Main Event is like the olympics for Pokah. Its where the greatest collide, where really only the best participate. It is here where great names like Varkoni and McEvoy finally stood up. The champions are the best and all internet players with their big mouths. I didnt see many in this event - just shows you how overrated they are.
Damn my English sucks. |
