This year we saw a lot of insane poker records being broken one after another at the highest limits of online poker. Players were aiming to finish the year with as much profit as possible, and we got to see some pots of unimaginable sizes before. The introduction of the Rail Haven tables on Full Tilt Poker was one of the big happenings of the year for High Stakes, as it was the main reason it became kind of common to watch poker stars like Ivey and Durrr play for pots as big as $400,000. Out of curiosity, we've made a research on the HighStakes sites out there to check who were the big winners and losers on both NL Hold'em and Omaha.
First, the biggest winner of 2008 so far isn’t really a big surprise… Phil Ivey! This amazing player made exactly $7,112,054 , from 1.01.2008 until 30.11.2008! In November alone he made $777,441 , which gave him the 5th spot in November’s winners list, as the biggest winner of the month was Eli Elezra, with $1,374,698 profit.
Second person on the list of biggest winners made around half of what Phil Ivey has made! Phil Galfond also known as OMGClayAiken or Jman28, profited $3,376,606! He is just marginally in front of Trex313 ($3,326,685) and Tom "durrrr" Dwan ($3,208,507). Those four players close the list of people who made over $3mln.
Of course, all that money comes from somewhere, so let’s take a look at the biggest losers of the high stakes cash games. First on the list is Lady marmelade, who lost $6,548,034 since the start of the year. Second in the red list is patatino, aka Guy Laliberté, founder and CEO of Cirque du Soleil and a passionate of poker. He has lost $4,042,466, what isn’t really capable of hurting his pockets, as he is a multi-billionaire. Third and fourth on the list are elmariachimacho and Bleachbum , who lost $2,788,162 and $1,097,457 respectively. Check out top ten lists of both winners and losers of the high stakes poker:
Biggest Winners in 2008 until November 30th:
Huh i thought Lady Marmelade and patatino were the same guy?
Who is lady marmelade then ?

it's weird how phil ivey can be so good when he's played so much fewer hands lifetime.. makes me wonder if lifetime hands really does say that much about skill level

your conclusion should be ivey is a prodigy not whether lifetime hands prove that much

Some guy on 2+2 compiled this flowchart in september for FTP. The general conclusion is that the top 30 players basically make their living off Guy.
Interesting graphical representation (but I think it's NLHE only)

I'm pretty sure, Raidern, that patatino, noaitama and lady marmelade are Laliberté so that's 11,500,000$ loss for him this year ! And now we see what happens if Laliberté quits playing poker. elmariachimacho is not Guy from what i've heard but a spoiled rich arab kid living in mexico (am i rite?), i would be interested in knowing who the fuck are "howisitfeellike ", "CHUFTY" and "La Key U" tho ...
elmariachimacho is amir dinh
chufty is friedman
la key u is green plastic

that was my first thought too, in the big games this year there are lots of $500k+ pots flying around and even the biggest winners are on like 3million profit, how can they afford to be in these games?

I'm always interested to see these numbers. The 10th most profitable online poker palyer in the world (on ftp) only made 1.7 million? And what happens if that rich donator quits? How much will profits drop.
Realities of poker economy are making me want to study more and play less.
Now I really am a busto. Thanks FTP.

these numbers are just from the super high stakes games right? I imagine that all of these players make a lot more from grinding the lower stakes games.

Yeah, Ivey went deep in some WPT tournaments but he also won the L.A. Classic WPT for a cool $1M+. But I am still fucking surprised Ivey has made that much this year online. It's fucking mind-boggling. But this just reaffirms my man-crush on Ivey (no homo).

they find high stakes live games with the rich fish who just dont trust having $1 mill online.
an accountant friend's wife plays high stakes limit games ($100/200 down to 25/50, although i know those arent nosebleed and its LIMIT) but the concept is the same. lot of wives, or husbands, recreation gamblers, who would rather lose 10k or win 10k rather than play 1/2 2/4, or even 5/10 just because they get the thrill and they can afford to blow a few grand every month or so.
