After failing to respond to several requests from Russian authorities to remove an advertisement for 888poker, Amazon’s Cloud service has been temporarily blocked in Russia, affecting approximately 21.4m customers of services such as Dropbox, Netflix, Airbnb, and Twitter, as all those use Amazon as their host.
The ban was initiated by the country’s media watchdog, the Roskomnadzor agency after a demand issued from the Federal Tax Service. The advertisement in question included a link to 888’s poker application, which is prohibited in Russia.
Russia, despite currently working to regulate its online sports betting market still remains in a no-go zone for online gambling at the moment.
According to calvinayre.com the whole haste to take down the site might have something to do with the fact that only last week saw the launch of Russia’s 2nd licensed online sports betting operator “888.ru”, which has nothing to do with 888 Holdings apart from similar name and is in fact run by the Russian lottery operator, called Soloto.
