Introduction Howard Lederer is known as one of the best poker players in the world. Howard hardly ever makes a move in haste, he is thoroughly planning his actions on mathemathical and statistical calculations. This way of playing earned him the nickname "the professor of poker". |
Profile Howard "the professor" Lederer was born October 30, 1964 in Concord, New Hampshire. His father, Richard Lederer is a professor i n English, his sister Katy an author and poet. And offcourse there is Annie, playing poker on a high level herself now. Howard was a highly ranked chess champion through his youth. When he went to Columbia University Lederer discovered the underground card rooms of New York, which was also the training ground for fellow proffesionals Erik Seidel and Dan Harrington. Howard played poker 70-80 hours a week for two years and went home broke nine out of ten nights. He realized that playing all-nighters wasn't helping his game, so Howard took a couple of steps back.Howard got more sleep and saw his game improve, his continued dedication and analysis of the game soon made him a force to be reckoned with at the tables.
In the late 1980's Howard started to work with Annie on her game. She would play during the day and discuss her game with Howard in the evening. As most of you probably will know Annie's play, it might be said this was a good move from Howard, although he might have regretted it when Annie knocked him out of the WSOP three times. In 1994 Howard and Annie made poker history as the first brother and sister to make the same final table at the WSOP.
In his first effort at the WSOP $10,000 Event in 1987 Lederer amazed all to finish 5th. Since that time he has continued to cash in 34 world series. In the mid '90's Howard moved to Vegas to play more high stakes poker games. He concentrated mostly on cash games and the WSOP until the World Poker Tour started in 2002. His game continued to improve and he earned his first of two Hall of Fame titles by winning the $2,500 No-Limit Deuce to Seven Draw event at the Hall of Fame Poker Classic in 1994. A year later, Howard earned his second title by defending his Deuce to Seven Draw title at the 1995 Hall of Fame Poker Classic. After five more years of hard work, Howard won the first of his two gold bracelets at the WSOP in 2000, in the $5,000 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo event. A year later, he won his second gold bracelet in the $5,000 Deuce to Seven event.
The first season of the WPT Howard captured two championships, the first in November of 2002, at Foxwoods. In March of 2003 Howard won his second title in the $5,000 Limit Hold 'em event on The Poker Million cruise. One month later, he won the first of his three Bellagio titles in the $2,500 No-Limit Hold 'em event at the 2003 Bellagio Five-Star World Poker Classic. His second Bellagio win was in the $2,500 No-Limit Hold 'em event in April 2004. His third Bellagio title came just 13 days later in the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event.
Lederer is part of the design team for Full Tilt Poker, and he provides commentary and analysis on FullTiltPoker.net's Learn from the pro's and FSN's Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament. Howard also runs the Howard Lederer Poker Fantasy Camp where people can play with and learn from the famous players. He created a DVD-based tutorials: "Howard Lederer's Secrets of Texas Hold'em" . This way he sure is making his nickname "The Professor" a very suitable one.
Away from the table, Howard enjoys family life with his wife Suzie, son Mattias and three dogs. He can often be found at the movies, concerts or on the golf course.
