Ville Mattila and Ludovic Lacay each put 200,000 chips into the pot in a battle of the blinds, and they took a heads-up flop of {9-Hearts} {10-Hearts} {6-Clubs}. Ville Mattila, ever the deliberate actor, announced, "Bet," but he remained absolutely motionless, hands over his cards. Lacay chuckled a little bit, and the dealer leaned forward and asked Mattila how much. After another thirty seconds or so, he stated that it would be 325,000. Lacay quickly reraised, and Mattila got himself all in for 1.535 million total. Lacay had him well covered, and the cards were quickly on their backs:
Mattila: {J-Spades} {J-Clubs} {6-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} (set of sixes)
Lacay: {3-Hearts} {8-Clubs} {9-Clubs} {J-Hearts} (top pair, flush/open-ended straight draws)
The turn {J-Diamonds} further improved Mattila to top set, and the river {K-Spades} was safe enough to double him up in a big way. He's up close to 3.5 million now, taking over the chip lead from Lacay. |

Ludovic Lacay Eliminated in 4th Place ($262,208)
Ludovic Lacay open-shoved for his last 415,000, a nickel shy of a pot-sized raise. Daniel Alaei proceeded to make a quick call, and Miguel Proulx made a quick fold.
And now, once again, we came a to dead standstill at Ville Mattila. He couldn't seem to figure out how much the bet was despite the chips being tidily stacked out in front of him. He pointed to both piles of chips, asked a few questions, and fumbled with his chips. He asked Alaei if he would check it down with him. The dealer immediately stepped in and Alaei was the one who said, "You can't ask me that. Just play."
After about another minute, Mattila still couldn't figure out the bet, and the dealer tried her best to move things along, "Okay, you are the big blind. You have 120,000 out there. If you want to call, it's 295,000 more. You can give me 300,000 and I will give you 5,000 back."
No joke. Mattila still couldn't quite get it, and he once again asked how much the total bet was. Alaei and Lacay called the clock almost simultaneously, and Mattila began to get angry. He let the clock tick down to zero and slid his cards back to the dealer with a few words to his opponents and the floor man. In any event, Lacay was now at risk, and the cards were turned up:
Lacay: {K-Spades} {J-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} {2-Spades}
Alaei: {A-Hearts} {K-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds} {J-Spades}
The all-in player stood as the dealer sealed his fate with a board of {Q-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} {10-Clubs} (3h}.
Unable to improve, Ludovic Lacay has been eliminated in fourth place. He'll pocket more than a quarter-million dollars, but he sure would have preferred the bracelet that he came so tantalizingly close to. Things might have turned out differently if Lacay could have won any one of the five all ins that he lost this evening. 0-for-5. The featured table arena is now nearly empty with the exit of the French contingent. |

Not better for Mig (has 2bb after giant pot between 2 big stacks):
Joseph Curcio opened for 85,000 under the gun and Salvatore Bonavena called on the button, as did James Mackey in the small blind. They saw a flop.
Flop: {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{2-Diamonds}
Mackey checked to Curcio who bet 150,000. Bonavena flat-called, but Mackey now check-raised to 400,000. Curcio folded, but Bonavena called that as well. They went heads up to the turn.
Turn: {7-Spades}
Mackey checked, and Bonavena bet 500,000. Mackey made the call. This was becoming a massive pot.
River: {9-Diamonds}
Mackey announced all in and Bonavena insta-called.
Mackey: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} for the nut flush
Bonavena: {2-Spades}{2-Hearts} for a full house
It took a very long time to count the stacks, which was OK as it allowed various floor staff finally to eject all the Italian railers form the Amazon Room - they'd actually managed to knock over the rail in their rush to see Bonavena double up from close range and the floor eventually had enough of them.
When the stack were counted, it was deemed that Mackey had some change - but only 80,000 or so. Bonavena moved into a decisive chip lead on around 4.4 million. |
