for those of you who didn't get to read my blog update, i got a new car
anyways, i'm planning to take a 13 hr 900 mi. road trip to indianapolis next week and i was wondering if it would be okay to drive up there with it. it's a 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe with a turbo engine. i was talking to my friend and his brother and they said it'd be a bad idea!?!?! they said it was because it was a turbo. but i don't understand it. WHY? it's a CAR.. it's MEANT to be driven!
what should i do?
oh also, any new car maintenance tips would be appreciated.
ps. LOL it JUST occurred to me that this might be a thinly veiled brag (but who brags about getting a hyundai rofl) |

Sounds silly to me. My friend flew half way across australia and picked up abrand new XR6 turbo and drove it back with no issue. Turbo is just more air pushed into the engine to help with combustion, I have never heard of breaking them in.
I just got a new car to |

check oil
check tyre pressure
check usual fluids
I dont see why turbo makes any difference.
did they not give you a reason as to why they said it was a bad idea? |

pretty sure most owners manuals have reasonably detailed info for how long all the parts need to be run in, probably don't have to follow it too strictly but it doesn't hurt to be a little gentler for the first 1k miles. you just spent a lot of money on a car you can be proud of so look after it.
standard tips for driving a turbo:
- drive off-boost for about the first 10 minutes of a drive from cold to warm the engine up to proper operating temperature before giving it some beastly squirtage
- let the turbo have some chance to cool down at the end of the drive before turning the ignition off, best way is to drive off-boost for about 5 minutes before stopping or if you cant do that just let the engine idle for at least a couple minutes after you've stopped and parked. probably the hottest your turbo will get in everyday driving is after a decent stretch of semi speedy highway driving where you'll be on boost for a long stretch, thats the only real thing to watch out for in long journeys as far as I can tell, so just ease off and take it easy at low rpms for a few mins before every stop break
edit:
also, be sure to follow the manual instructions on bedding your brake pads in. iirc you need to do a few hard stops from varying speeds up to 60mph to do this. |

I think turbo is air taken out faster from the engine and not pushed into the engine. That would be a compressor.
OP: U should be fine have fun! |

as Ket said the most importance thing about turbo maintenance is if you were driving your car hard, just dont turn it off after you reach your destination, leave it on for at least 2 minutes.
This is only for people who drive really fast and punish the turbo, if you dont like driving ur car like you hate it dont even bother with this. |

wrong.
A turbo and a super compressor are very alike things, the super compressor is just driven directly by the engine by a belt and the turbo is a turbine powered by the exhaust gasses pressure.
They both inject pressurized air into the engine, the turbo carries greater top pressure but it has a "lag" while the super compressor doesnt but its max PSI is much lower. |

With new cars you should let it break in. Meaning don't Floor it for first like 1k or whatever miles and dont be speeding through the highway. |

He doesn't have to if the turbo is water/oil cooled.
As for op, the reason why you shouldn't drive that far is, the car is fairly new, it could have something bad from the factory that hasn't been an issue just yet. |

if its really reallly new just do what ket said and be easy on the clutch also, clutches normally take about 500 mi to get worn in good.
but the turbo thing, your turbo on that car is probably a low pressure turbo and not boosting 2 horribly much, but im not sure..
it is a nice brag tho, that car has a ton of potential and i think its RWD + LSD, so lots of fun. |

What i heard is that u should not try to use the engine at 100% cause its a brand new car. Some sellers here also recomend to drive at least 2000 km before u use the car at the highway. =D |

Turbo is pushing air into the engine not fuel. Turbo actually increases fuel efficiency. |
